It has been known for a while now at Harmonix that I am a huge Black Keys fan. Not sure if it was the bands shirts I wear or their concert posters on my office walls or the old H-76 guitar next to my desk I jam Black Keys riffs on all day long? Or maybe because I named the font we developed for Rock Band 3, Pentatonic, as homage to the Black Keys' use of the infamous blues pattern. Or maybe it was the years of constantly recommending The Black Keys to be in Rock Band. Whatever the reason, I am proud to announce that the day has finally come. The Akron, Ohio duo Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have finally found their way into Rock Band with three tracks to teach us all about the soulful and authentic blues rock sound.
The first track comes from my first introduction to The Black Keys, their fourth album Magic Potion. After hearing the first track I became an instant fan boy. And I’m delighted that the second track is coming to Rock Band. I found "Your Touch" to be a fuzz-filled freight train that delivered all the goods to my ears. Recording in a basement gave those fat pentatonic blues riffs and heartfelt vocal delivery another level of authenticity I’m always looking for.
Out of the basement and produced by Danger Mouse, Attack and Release, their fifth album refines their sound and delivers us two tracks to Rock Band. "Strange Times" and #23 of the top 100 songs of 2008 according to Rolling Stone, "I Got Mine." I can’t wait to try and sing and play the guitar with these tracks. Nothing will please me more than experiencing their music in an all new way.
Also being released this week is a three-pack from Rolling Stone Artist of the Week Neon Trees. Like The Black Keys, Neon Trees are making their Rock Band debut this week. The band is currently on tour with Paper Tongues and 30 Seconds to Mars, but they made their mark when they opened for The Killers on a 2008 tour.
This week they come to the Rock Band Music Store with three songs from their debut album - "Sins of My Youth," "1983," and "Animal." "Animal" was a Billboard Hot 100 single and even hit No. 3 on the Alternative Rock chart.
These tracks will be available as "The Black Keys Pack 01" and "Neon Trees Pack 01," as well as individual tracks, on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and as individual tracks only on Wii. Tracks are $1.99 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and $2.00 on Wii. The packs are $5.49 on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
