Ten of the All-Time Weirdest Grammy Moments
It wouldn't be the Grammy Awards without a couple moments that leave you scratching your head. This year's awards had some great moments — the Foo Fighters did us proud, and Amy Winehouse gave rehab a good name (don't bother arguing - Amy was great). Then again, we had Alicia Keys duetting with a dead guy, and Vince Gill verbally slapping Kanye. In that spirit, here are ten of the all-time Grammy howlers:
- Bono and Sinatra in 1994. Legends go wild: This was the year Bono riled the censors by vowing to "f*&@ up the mainstream" when U2 won. Two commercial breaks later he gave a rambling intro to Sinatra, whose even-more rambling acceptance speech got yanked midway through for a commercial.
- Best New Artist, 1977. One of the liveliest years in music history; with punk rock, disco and arena rock all making big waves. And the winner was…the Starland Vocal Band. Anyone for an Afternoon Delight?
- Keely Smith onstage with Kid Rock this week The Kid didn't do too bad singing "That Old Black Magic" (by Smith's late partner Louis Prima), but that "Who is this guy?" look in her eye was priceless.
- Sly Stone in 2006: The notoriously erratic soul legend wandered onstage and…wandered offstage again.
- Eurythmics in 1984: Annie Lennox messes with a nation's heads by singing in a male-drag outfit that may or may not have been Elvis. Amazingly, her partner Dave Stewart returned this week as Ringo Starr's sidekick.
- Soy Bomb with Bob Dylan in 1998. This performance guy stage-crashed Dylan's song and managed nearly a minute's worth of interpretive dance before security got him. Dylan looked amused, having seen stranger things in his time.
- Ol' Dirty Bastard crashes Grammys in 1998 ….And severly shakes up award winner Shawn Colvin. We'd love to know what became of whoever was handling security that year.
- Best New Artist in 1990: The shameful one: Milli Vanilli. Though we're still amazed that people who loved that record got rid of it as soon as they realized somebody else was singing.
- Song of the Year, 1967: The only time the Beatles ever won this category, and it was for "Michelle." Let us know if you can find anyone who picks that as their favorite Beatles song.
- "London Calling" in 2003. The Clash song as performed by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Little Steven, and Dave Grohl. The only weird thing is that something this cool ever happened.
