I vividly remember watching MTV and seeing “Nuthin’ But A G Thang” (after school and after homework) as a fifth grader hearing in Snoop count “One, two, three and to the four, Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre is at the door…” and thinking “How is it possible to look so cool while counting and ironing a shirt? Also, why is his baseball cap all blurry?” That was my first of several lessons from the mysterious Mr. Snoop D O double G.
Snoop shines the brightest when he collaborates with genius producers. He came onto the scene as a protégé of Dr. Dre and was featured on Dre’s classic The Chronic during the heyday of gangsta rap in the early nineties. Snoop followed up that huge album debut with his own first record, Doggystyle which became the first debut album to enter the charts at No. 1, with two Top Ten singles, and eventually went quadruple platinum.
Two of the songs in this week’s group of hits from Snoop are also from a team up with another visionary producer, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes. “Beautiful” & “Drop It Like It’s Hot” came a decade after Snoop first came onto the scene in the ‘90s and broke through to bigger audiences scooping up a Grammy nomination & and No. 1 hit respectively along the way.
This week eight songs specifically reproduced for Rock Band and originally featured on a variety of albums spanning Snoop’s impressive career, will be added to the Rock Band Music Store. “Beautiful” from Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$ will also be available, as well as the 2004 No. 1 hit single, “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” and from Malice n Wonderland, we have “That’s Tha Homie.” “Ridin’ In My Chevy” and “Sensual Seduction” from Ego Trippin’. From Doggystyle, we’ll have “Tha Shiznit” and “Who Am I (What’s My Name),” as well as “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” from The Doggfather.
A word from the Doggfather himself on being the first hip hop artist in Rock Band; “I consider myself an OG gamer, and to be chosen as the first hip hop artist to appear in Rock Band...well, it doesn't get any better than that, ya dig?!?” Snoop said. “I know my fans gonna get down with tha Pound with this one and tha youngsters really gonna realize who started this gamer ish, u hear me?!?”
