Are the edits to lyrics done to keep a T rating because there is some strong market analysis that shows that an M rating would cripple sales?
It has bothered me for awhile and playing Sir Psycho Sexy last night (on guitar mind you) made me regret a purchase for the first time (and I have 98%+ of the DLC). The song was mangled beyond recognition to the point of being awkward and distracting.
I have a 20yo son who games and we have always had systems in the house. I was generally a pretty conservative parent (no R rated movies, no parental advisory music, no M games) as I felt that keeping the innocence of childhood was a good thing to keep for as long as possible. Even my rules had exceptions. For instance, he was allowed to see the matrix after I screened it, there were some M games that he was allowed to get after I vetted them, etc. Bear in mind that I was the *exception* rather than the rule when it came to his friends and their parents.
That being said, I find it hard to believe that an M rating would actually hurt sales. For evidence, I submit ANY FPS on the market. Go into any MP room and listen to all the prepubescent voices cursing like sailors as they play their M rated game! Also, wouldn't it be possible to leverage the parental controls in XBL to help this issue as well?
It strikes me as odd that HMX bills itself as musicians first and devs second, but violates the original intent and form of the work with edits to (arguably) increase sales.
The only reason I can see to edit is to keep the rating down to help sales. This is a serious question: Is there ANY other reason that they would continue to edit songs?
Sorry for the rant, but Sir Psycho Sexy pushed me over the edge. ;)
