View Full Version : Rock Band needs some prog!

I mean, come on. Progressive rock is one of the most under-represented genres in all of GH and whatnot thus far. You would think it would be a perfect fit for Rock Band, considering how most really good prog rock pieces have complex and skilled parts for each instrument.

Think about it. Is there any song that fits what Rock Band is trying to accomplish more than, say, King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man? An awesome middle part where each instrument is essentially going balls-out, each giving incredible performances. Listen to that bass! Listen to the drums! Listen to that guitar solo! Listen to the freak-out at the end of the song! This is perfect for the game!

Or what about Yes' Yours is No Disgrace? What coordination! It's amazing! Chris Squire's growling bass, Jon Anderson's falsetto voice, Steve Howe's awesome guitar solo, Bill Bruford's constant drumming... how is this not already confirmed? What about Starship Trooper? What about Roundabout?

Hell, why haven't we been given Pink Floyd yet? Have A Cigar, Comfortably Numb, Time, Money, all great choices. I'll be forced to do something violent if you put Another Brick In the Wall pt 2 in, though.

And how about Aqualung? It's the quintessential song for this game. All of the instruments would be loads of fun to play for the entire 6:30 duration, which is, as far as I can tell, exactly what this game is going for.

C'mon Harmonix, there are tons of people out there that want to space out a bit.

perhaps its just me, but alot of Pink Floyd is keyboards. yes there are guitars and drums and all that, but the parts that make Pink Floyd what they are (at least in my mind) lie in the keyboard.

I agree that keyboards are a huge part to Floyd's sound, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the other instruments are doing nothing. Listen to the live show here (http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/ConcertDetail.aspx?id=2923|5541), you'll see what I mean.

3 of a perfect pair by king crimson would be pretty cool.

Oh, come on. Surely there are more people out there that aren't just metal-heads.

I like Prog.

Kansas has some good tracks (If you listen beyond Carry On Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind, you'll see some good Progressive Rock) although a lot of them don't have guitar all the way through. It's frustrating, because songs like Hopelessly Human have great solos, but in true ProgRock fashion, give other instruments solos while the guitar does nothing. But I'm sure they could find a few songs that would fit Rock Band.

Rush would pretty much be the perfect band for the game, as long as they get a Master track. The prospect of somebody trying to cover Geddy Lee's vocals is as scary as Killer Queen.

Yes also has good songs, although I'm hoping for Roundabout over Yours is No Disgrace.

Those are the main three I'm hoping for, but bands like Jethro Tull and Genesis would be pretty good, too.

Upon second thought, you're right, Yours Is No Disgrace definitely wouldn't be best. On the other hand, Roundabout probably wouldn't be that great, either, since it has a "quiet" section and gives the spotlight to the keyboards quite a bit. (its unfortunate that keyboards aren't in the game, but whatever) Starship Trooper, however, would be perfect. As you mentioned, a master track would practically be a necessity. Good luck getting someone besides Jon Anderson to do Jon Anderson's voice.

I agree, though what rock band needs's is a good Rush song, like Tom Sayer, Spirit of the radio, or Passage to bankok.

Word. Some King Crimson would definitely be fitting. Fripp is amazingly talented, as is everyone in Rush (Neil Peart = greatest drummer ever, Lifeson = one of the greats, Lee = well, i just want to sing the vocals like him while playing the bass, INTENSE). Yeah, even some modern prog would be sweet. I'm thinking some Dredg, Tool, Mars Volta... the good ****.

I agree. Aqualung would be great, so would King Crimson. For a Pink Floyd song I think In the Flesh, or Run Like Hell (Both on the wall) Would be good. The 4 main instruments have good representation, and the songs are great.

Young Lust would also be a nice Floyd song.

All good choices, but I'd go with Have A Cigar purely for the opening 10 seconds. One of the coolest guitar riffs ever.
