The SAME EXACT FREAKING THING happened all day at my school today, with my sister being the leader of the pack. Our school news even had a special on it. Everthing was Twilight.

Apperantly romance and vampires are the perfect formula for making girls ages 12-25 go absolutely nuts.

But, the hype... I just don't get it. It honestly doesn't earn it. It's a very boring book. Story doesn't pick up 'til halfway. The characters are flat and unrelatable. The descriptions are... ugh, horrible. (Yes, I read the book. Yes, I regret it.)

At my job today (I work at a bookstore), everyone was buying up copies of the books. It's sad. Such wonderful literature is being passed up. Then again, I'm a snobbish English major. :p

Addendum: I was wondering when a thread about this book and its movie adaptation were going to appear on these boards...

Ya it maybe a fad and yes we all know its unrealistic but funtastical IMO but believe me its going to be around for awhile because there are four books so far and she is writing a fifth I do believe.

Yea, I heard its wrote at like a 3rd grade level, that shows the attention span of the girls these days b/c if it was written at a level they are supposed to be in (12th), they wouldn't read it.

And usually vampires deal with battles with God or other vampires and stuff. This stupid book is about romance and a wierd vampire guy. I mean its sad how popular this book/movie is. These 2 girls in my class got up at 3am on a school day and drove to a mall 30 minutes away to get a shirt and a ticket to go talk to the actor who plays Edward Cohen(My teacher who is annoyed by this said, I bet there are guys in this room that are better looking then that guy lol) for like 1 minute...oh so sad.

And they are trying to market this towards guys by showing action stuff in the trailers. I've been told that its all romance up until the last 2 minutes when there is a huge fight.
I just hope this blows over and everybody forgets about it

I agree, it's terrible. the only conclusion that makes sense is that all girls think this actor who's playing Edward Cullen is hot....but no one gave a **** when he was in Harry Potter...I give up.

Unrelated: also, any one excited for angels and demons? I had never read it, but the trailer caught my interest. halfway through the book and it's amazing so far (although my mom's a bit disturbed by the religious content, even though she's not catholic) but if you haven't read it and are not religiously sensitive, i'd check it out

I want this fad over now! Like seriously, all I ever hear at school is OMG I love Edward and oh the movie was so perfect just like the book. I talked to someone yesterday who read the series before it was big and she said she expected it to be over by Christmas. Before I know it, my school will ran over with vampires cause of this fad. I have no desire to read this book or see the melodramatic movie, that said I do not think it is that sad to discuss it in an AP class. Let me say that I am an English Education Major who is fairly close to graduation.
Anyways there seems to be this weird stigma with books. If they are popular and appeal to the masses, ala Harry Potter, then they deserve no critical study. This is just plain not true. Books and other writings are generally not like artwork, they tend to have been very popular in their time which caused them to remain pertinent to intellectual discussion, as well as enjoyable to read. So while it is easy to trash the book and hate it (again as I honestly do) you have to realize that in the age of the internet and video games and movies, any person who get kids to read has to be someone fairly remarkable with relatable material.

The $37 million vampire flick, expected to have a killer opening day, had a monster opening day, grossing an estimated $35 million, Exhibitor Relations reported. One-fifth of that gross, or $7 million, came from Friday midnight screenings.

I might be one of the few people on here that is a huge proponent of Twilight. I'm not a fan of the book or movies themselves, but the series is an excellent way to introduce people (especially young people) to the fantasy genre.

Kinda like how listening to Slipknot is a gateway drug to more extreme versions of metal. Or at least they should be, in theory.

I flipped to the last page, and wondered why people were talking about Muse. I guess Supermassive Black Hole is in the soundtrack, that's pretty cool.

I'm actually trying to get a copy of the book so that I can make an actual critique of it instead of the guy in my English class that says it's the worst book/movie ever, even though he only read the first three pages.

I simply cannot make an assumption about the movie before I read the book, because as one idiot put it, you'll only like the movie if you like the book. Genius, sherlock. You'll also only like the book if you like the book.

So anyways, looking for a girl to lend me the Twilight book.

Alright gents, let me contribute my two cents to this thread.

I for one, hate everything about the Twilight fanbase as much as the other guy, I hate legions of 14 year old girls obsessing over Edward or Jacob, and I'd always get in stupid Facebook arguments with them over it, until one day I was challenged to read the book.

I read the first book, and it was actually decent. It's an interesting universe, decent narrative, though it's definitely geared more towards girls, but on the other end of the spectrum, there's a lot of fantasy stories oriented towards boys. Some of them I'm willing to bet make girls annoyed at how boys obsess over them.

The book has problems, the dialogue is terribad, no motivations are ever really given for most of the characters.

On the other end of the spectrum, the plot progression is done very well, with the first half of the book leading into romance, and then the last half deal with the romance and a certain conflict. Bella's voice is captured well, and the characterization is great.

I've seen the first movie twice and it's a great book to film adaptation. There were a few particular scenes that had a much greater effect on me on screen than the book did, so in that respect I'd call the film a success.

And this is coming from a straight 18 year old boy, so think what you will, I took an honest look at the series and liked it. You should never judge anything by it's fanbase. It's like with bands like Tool or Radiohead, 90% of their fans are pretentious douchebags, but if you decide not to listen to them because of that, you miss out on great music. Not to say that Twilight is a great series. The last two books are as ****ty as you probably think they are, but the first two books are better then what a lot of you think they are.

What I'm saying is that it's a decent book, and that there's kind of mentality that because of who reads it, it has to be ****ty. It's a decent character driven series, in an interesting universe. It held my attention the entire time, the characters are neat and if you think there's any merit to the premise the book will reel you in for it's entirety.

On a second note, the fourth book is probably one of the worst books of all time.

If you don't care about getting spoiled on it's plot, then this is a pretty funny read making fun of how bad the fourth book is.

Only reason I heard of Twilight was because of the intarwebs. At work everyone's old enough to be my parent or grandparent so the chances of them hearing about this is low.

I've been thinking about borrowing the books from the library out of curiosity. No interest in the movie though.

Highschool...if a girl sees something she likes, she goes crazy and tells all of her friends about it. They just go along with it and make a big deal about something that is just stupid if you think about it.

I also hate to be the bearer of bad news... sure books like this give girls high expectations with guys but think like this.

Seriously most girls are let down, why you might ask? Men think and love with their penises... that simple.

Think with your brain it works wonders believe me on this... (Yes I have a brain)

And love with you HEART... not OMFG I IZ GONNA GET LAIDZ! I know that's not cool, nor good. TBH I'm annoyed some skater kid on my PSN friends list sends me a message every week saying "I'm gettin' laid tonight yeah!"

I reply "That's nice, so how long you been with this new girl? 2 Days?"
I'm surprised he hasn't removed me yet

Hate to bring this back up, but it don't work like that. Loving with your heart gets you into a relationship while loving with your penis gets you laid. It's that simple.

Y'know what, scratch that. Loving with your heart doesn't get you into a relationship. I'm almost convinced nothing but luck does, but that's a long diatribe for another topic.

This whole Twilight thing really caught me by surprise. I watched South Park on Wednesday and asked my friend what the deal with the vampires was, and she said told me they were making fun of Twilight. Before this I had no idea it was even popular, I had only seen the trailers and thought it looked kind of dumb.

On Thursday, I overheard some girls saying "are you seeing Twilight at midnight or tomorrow morning?" Actually, I heard this exact conversation about 30 times.

I swear by the end of the day on Friday, less than half the girls in my school were there, either because they left early to see it or they never came because they saw it at midnight.

I didn't even know the girls at my school knew how to read, let alone read for enjoyment.

I never understood how Map of the Problematique was so overlooked in the US (I think it was a single in the UK though). I really don't think it's that overrated though, I mean yeah Supermassive Black Hole is pretty bland, but Knights of Cydonia is still quite an amazing track all on its own. I've have to rank my top three on the album as such:

Knights of Cydonia
Map of the Problematique
Exo-Politics

...with Assassain coming in fourth. I've also thought Starlight to be pretty bland too. So it's really only an average album compared to other Muse albums, among other bands it should be considered a success.

I know this is a little surprising, but my favorite album is Origin of Symmetry. Matt Bellamy got his singing perfectly on the album, because his voice sounds more like it's an instrument than producing lyrics, and I really like that a lot. Plus, I still haven't got enough of New Born, Plug In Baby, Hyper Music, or Citizen Erased yet, they are all fantastic, in my opinion.

My girlfriend made me go see this with her, sadly.
I dunno if it was answered, but they DID play a muse song- Super Massive Black Hole.
There was maybe 4 good scenes in the entire movie.
Someof the scenes with Edward in it were so awkward even the people that loved the book were laughing for all the wrong reasons.
It would have been 10x's better if they actually put that one James guy in the movie for longer than 20 minutes.
he was the only interesting thing about it.

And I refuse to read the books.
ANy book that's based off an author's wet dream can never be good.
A MORMON authors wet dream, no less.
That's too complex of a paradox for me to understand.

"When you read the book," says Pattinson, looking appropriately pallid and interesting even without makeup, "it's like, 'Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.' I mean, every line is like that. He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108-year-old virgin so he's obviously got some issues there."

I showed that to a stupid Twilight fan and she's like, "No, he loves Edward and the book"

I hate ignorant people.

Twilight isn't an excellent book by any means.

Like I've said, it has strengths, but it has a lot of weaknesses.

It's biggest one being the dialogue. Bella doesn't talk like a 17 year old girl, it has nothing to do with her being smart, she just doesn't have a consistent voice.

I'm 18 years old, in college and am getting my Associates in Writing, and when it comes to fictional writing, dialogue is my specialty. Stephanie is just a flat out horrible writer, I mean one of the first sentences in the book is "My mom drove me to the airport with the car windows open."

From a writing standpoint it's just an awkward and clumsy sentence, but from a dialogue perspective it's plain robotic. Could you imagine your friend walking up to you and saying "Hey John, I just drove to your house with my windshield wipers running."

You'd think, " Why did he bother mentioning that, why is it significant to the subject? (Driving to your house).

The book is full of things like that. I'll defend the book far enough against all the kiddies who hate it because it's a popular or because "LOL VAMPIRES HAVE TO BE HARDCORE LIKE BLADE", and like I said I like it, it's a uilty pleasure of mine, but nobody is allowed to call it an "excellent book" or even a great one.

I enjoyed the book, but I can see what you mean about the writing. She wasn't really writing the book for a "mature"/"adult" audience.

It is a book aimed at pre-teens and teens up to 16 (maybe 17). It is also aimed at a female audience (there is no denying that).

However, it does have a certain appeal to ME. I like vampire stories, and to be honest, I like her twists on the mythology. For once, the vampire isn't the obsessed, he is the obsession. The human "hunts" the vampire.

I can see where you are coming from (a writer's standpoint), but I enjoy it because of THE STORY.

I like him in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Edward Scissorhands".

But I remember how crazy some girls acted when the first "Pirates Of The Caribbean" came out.

I know, like I said I enjoyed it too.

There's a difference between liking something and recognizing that it's good. For one I love the movie Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, absolutely love it. Would I call it a great movie? Not if you paid me.

And you can't really praise the book on it's bare roots mythology seeing as how Stephanie basically yanked the premise straight out of the Ann Rice series.

I'm not saying that it's not excellent because it's aim towards girls or because it's a Young Adults novel. For instance I'd call the Harry Potter series excellent, because JK Rowling nailed it from the writing perspective AND from the story perspective.

It's like if you saw a movie and it had a phonomenal story..on paper, but was horribly acted, would you say it's an excellent movie due to the merit of the story? Or would you say "it was an alright movie, the story was great, but acting kinda ruined it."

I fully agree... Pick of Destiny was funny as hell... but lets face it. That movie was ******ed

I may not like Harry Potter, but yes Rowling did nail the story and the characters etc. very well. And I would consider it good.

I go by both, book to movie adaptions usually don't go over well anyways... so really. Twilight (If it really is as bad as everyone says) it wouldn't surprise me in the LEAST bit

The main issue with the Twilight movie is that everyone thinks the acting is bad, but the script is the real crook.

Not even Marlon Brando could take a line like

"That's all super hero stuff right? What if I'm not the hero....what if I'm the bad guy?" and make it sound convincing.

Overall it's more entertaining than the book because they establish the main bad guy of the book earlier in the movie, while in the book, there's no mention of this character at all until like the 360th page(out of 478).

As for the Ann Rice thing, here's the perspective.

In the Ann Rice novel, it features a waitress named Sookie who is a telepath. She meets the vampire Bill and is iniatilly drawn to him because Bill is the only person whoose mind she cannot read.

In Twilight, the vampire Edward is the telepath, and he cannot read Bella's mind.

And there's also a conversation concerning vampire myths like "Can you see yourself in the mirror?" that's near identical in the Ann Rice books and Twilight.

Which Anne Rice book was that?

It isn't "Interview With The Vampire", "The Vampire Lestat", "The Queen Of The Damned", "The Tale Of The Body Thief", "Memnoch The Devil" or "The Vampire Armand". I'm also pretty sure it isn't "Merrick", "Blood & Gold", "Blackwood Farm" or "Blood Canticle".

It isn't "The Witching Hour", "Lasher" or "Taltos". It isn't "Pandora" or "Vittorio The Vampire".

O.K.

It's just I'm a HUGE Anne Rice fan (I have read and own most of her books), so that just threw me off.

To be honest, the only comparable thing I see is the way both authors use the first person narrative to express the longing of their characters.

I, as a guy, was forced by two of my friends to read the book. It was either read it, or be annoyed for the rest of my life (or at least until the fad faded.) After reading them, I'm afraid to say that I enjoyed the series. Believe me, I was ashamed of myself everytime I opened those books.

They then dragged me to watch the movie, which did a fair job of going from book to film. Best part of the movie, Ashley Greene, she's pretty. Worst part, my screaming friend...ugh.

I was at Barnes & Nobles with the girl I like, and I asked her to explain Twilight to me.

"It's like...the bible to hotness. If you read it, you fully understand hotness."

She saw the movie opening night, and I warned her she would be in a foul mood next morning.

Me: "How was the movie?"
Her: "Horrible. Writing sucked, plot sucked, characters sucked, girls in theater sucked (she isn't a very girly girl), and I'm tired."

Its one of those "Eh, this friendships to good to waste."

Though, if I read Twilight, I think I'd understand hotness enough.

Maybe that's why I'm subconsciously looking to borrow the book, because I don't understand hotness, I only understand prettyness (I hate using the word hot...)

Also, Harmonix, can you please get Supermassive Black Hole out on Rock Band quickly? Because I want to invite some attractive girls over and I need something to complement my 'Wall of Twilight'

My brother (who is a beast) keeps trying to get me to read these books. I keep trying to facepalm him, but I usually end up in pain.

Also, check out the quote in my sig. I saw this on another website and laughed for like five minutes.

You guys should just say "Screw it, I'll read it".

You have to get through the "introductory" chapters before "anything happens". The chapters are LONG so it takes a while.

I heard the plot arrives on page 328 and leaves at page 372.

Actually, the plot arrives as soon as the main character first notices the Cullen kids in the cafeteria.

The action doesn't really pick up until the middle of chapter 3 (which would be around page 55).

Alright, I borrowed the book from somebody...

I've read about the first forty pages. It's alright so far, a little bland, a bit confusing. Her writing style is grammatically correct, but sometimes awkward.

What makes me kinda happy, though, is that part of her writing style is the same style I use. Also, the beginning of the book, where she's going from class to class, partially mirrors a short story I wrote last year, I thought that was pretty cool.

I hate to say it, but...I'm starting to look a little forward to reading the rest of the book.
