First let me say that as a profession im a gadget guru... I take good care of my things dust free scratch free and with full power protection a $1000 device that protects my electronics from power surges and have never had a console die on me until last night.
Being a computer guy i always read about updates before applying them so when I put rock band 2 in yesterday an update 1.01 came up I chose no I dont want to update... at which point the ps3 froze on the grey update screen I left it for about 20 min and then gave up and held the ps button on the controller, got nothing, then I tried the power button the system would not respond I had to use the switch on the back as a last resort after waiting a total of 30 min on a grey screen. When i turned my system back on the ps3 started as normal i loged into my account but the rock band 2 disk no longer shows althow it was still in the drive i ejected the disk and re inserted but my system will no longer read any discs.
Thats right my ps3 wont read anything no cds dvds blu-rays or games (which are blu-rays) also I noticed that when i insert the disk I cant hear it spinning so i eject it and it comes out in the exact same way as when i insert it confirming my suspicions that the disc is not spinning..
my conclusion is that choosing no on the update update messed up my blu ray drive as it no longer spins disks did you ever test choosing no on your update before releasing this update as you have now ruined my ps3 all I can do is play online games.
can i get a response please. I have an original 60 gb yes the $600 ps3
As I know that the internal hardware is different and I would like to know did you ever test choosing no to the update on my style system before releasing this patch.
Ive never had a problem choosing no to an update as this is what I always do, up until your RB2 patch yesterday!!!

I highly doubt it was specifically the patch (or your refusal to install it) that caused the problem. I have the same model (CECHAxx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation3)) and have had to have it "repaired" once by Sony (I'm almost sure they sent me a refurbished machine, which is totally fine). My specific issue happened with Call of Duty 4 and my system becoming completely unbootable.
I'm betting you're past your one year warranty. I would still call Sony support if I were you and ask about your particular problem. Sometimes there are known issues that hardware companies are willing to fix for free (call it a "soft recall") but I'm sure you know that being a gadget-guy. ;)
It's hard for me to believe any part of the patch process could be what caused your problem since you told it to not install.

As a 'gadget-guy' you should know that the software can't stop a drive from spinning up when a disc is inserted. That's done on the drive's firmware level. I'm sure it's just a minor overlook on your part in frustration to your Blu-ray drive melting down (which is the #1 cause of failure with PS3's, despite the low failure rate).
Also, I don't believe that Harmonix's code was run in any part of the steps you detailed. The GameOS checked the Game's ID, then cross-checked it on PSN for updates for your title, found one, and prompted you. When you clicked no, it locked up before it got out of the GameOS's grey update screen, likely when it first tried to access your failed Blu-ray drive after prompting you on the update.

still its quite ironic that 1. my ps3 froze after selecting no and 2. ive never had problems with any disks as I had played RB2 earlier that morning without a hitch and it was only later when I started rb2 and the update came up / froze upon selecting no that the system can no longer access the drive.
i agree with what your saying but if you where looking at the problem the circumstances that led up to the problem also play a part in troubleshooting the issue. THE PS3 FROZE UPON SELECTING NO BECOMING FULLY UNRESPONSIVE/LOCKED on a light gray screen that is the background for all game updates The ps button did not work on the controller to quit or turn off they system, the power button on the front of the console was also unresponsive very strange if the issue is hardware related as you suggest why would so many things fail at the same time... in the middle of a software update...
I am convinced the update screwed up my ps3 and the system no longer has the ability to control the disk drive. Im sure that part of the update code checks to make sure the disk is in the drive to verify that you really own the game and that its inserted... it FROZE ON THE UPDATE SCREEN following that event my PS3 doesn't work quite a strange occurrence in my opinion

That sounds more to me like many symptoms of one thing failing and not many things failing at the same time. The Blu-ray drive failed while your PS3 was trying to access it, which caused your PS3 to crash, which caused your controller to be unresponsive and the power button not to work.
I've had my PS3 lock up a handful of times and it always happens exactly as you described, nothing responds. I can usually get it to turn off when it's locked up by holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds forcing a 'hard shutdown' kind of like on a PC.
Although, if you are still really convinced that the software update process killed your PS3, you are still barking up the wrong tree. The software update system was written by Sony, not Harmonix. As you said, all games use the same patching system. This is because it's an API written by Sony for the PS3 for all developers to use.

I had my 60gb crash on me, sent it in for repairs and they sent me a 80gb version.

Just because the API is available to developers doesn't mean that developers know how to write code properly for all versions of the system.
for example win 98 there was a patch released by Microsoft that over lapped the mail ports that ended up braking Microsoft outlook to be fixed later by another update The code written for the API can still be faulty if they wrote the no event wrong in the API then it could easily be the cause
Cancel is one of the most overlooked items in software... people just assume it works I highly doubt they checked what would happen if you selected no i dont want to update and to go even further checked the code on my specific model of ps3 as the code is executed differently on each model and there are different blue ray drives on the newer consoles that prob run different code.

This is an obvious troll, so others should stop replying, unless you're looking for laughs like me.
However, I did once have a PS3 that got fried by Call of Duty 3. I assume it was some strange of board overheat issue, because the power subsystem had completely failed after playing the game for a few minutes.
With that said, Rock Band 2 is a pretty high quality piece of software and probably won't cause your PS3 to fail. It's probably not possible for canceling an update to screw your BD drive. If the PS3 in question were really broken, its probably user error ;)
Way to Google "define API" by the way.

I would be pissed if sony swapped out my OG 60 for an 80 they are not comparable
I love my ps 3 because it is the only one thats fully backwards compatible the 80 they gave you uses software to emulate the ps 2 where as the 60 had a hardware chip that allows it to play the games as intended running on the chip just like the ps2 s had. they removed the chip from the ps3 to cut costs thus the new lower price point and in fact the newest ps3s are not even software backwards compatible focusing only on ps3 games ad blu rays / dvds / cds

Ok we are getting off topic here but...
WOW that’s funny considering I was talking to my friends a software engineer and I quoted what he was saying to me... He says your L33t for goggling the definition for API
APIs are useful and useless all at the same time... it all depends on the code used and cancel is the least tested function...
Oh I believe by the way RB2 was developed originally for Xbox 360 and ported to ps3 which is why there are glitches on the ps3 version that aren’t present on the xbox360 version.
How is wanting to read the change logs before updating any piece of software user error. I think updating blindly is user error!! All I did was click cancel/no why did the ps3 Halt (a linux term) during a "no" choice, while running the software update. That really sounds like bad code to me. The system locked not even the power button, which I held for almost a minute respond.
Somehow the software update locked/halted the hardware in the system and last I checked the blu ray drive is a piece of hardware that is also in the system I suspect that the drive still is locked/halted somehow by the failed cancel operation thus making my drive inoperable until released
You cant tell me the it guy that my system failed because of user error ... sounds like programer user error to me!!!!
Now what is interesting is that your blaming your failed power supply on software when it could easily have been a power surge issue if you dont have an UPS box, a ventilation issue ,or lack of dusting issue go get a can of air and use that as often as necessary to keep your console free of dust!!!
Now please stop filling my thread with useless posts I would like a response from Harmonx in regards to there testing procedures to truly answer my question did they test cancel on a 60 gb ps3 launch system or for that matter any ps3 system
Anyone else click no to the update or is every one here a sheep blindly clicking yes without checking first
Just because the button says cancel doesn't mean that’s what its coded to do I could write an app that would delete your hard drive if you clicked cancel wouldn't that be fun
For example on windows
IF THEN > "Cancel" > THEN DO > "deltree C/"

I'm in the same situation MUD
When I cut on my PS3 (RB2 was in), it ran like normal, then the update popped up and things went down hill from there. Since the update, my ps3 only works somewhat correctly when RB2 is in. I can play RB2, but I can't play any other games. When I cut the system on without RB2 in it, the Ps3 seems to run correctly and everything, just nothing ever shows up on screen, no Xmediabar, nothing. The only way I can get to the Xmediabar is to put in RB2 and then press home to get to the bar, but when I quit the game or go to other features in the xmediabar, the system goes back to showing blank. The only other thing I have been able to use correctly while having RB2 in was a few demos I have. The only way I could get to the demos was to press home while RB2 was in and navigate from there.
This is really weird and kinda sucks. I guess it isn't as bad for me cause right now just about the only game I play is RB2. But I am going to want to play something else sometime soon.

Anyone experiencing trouble with their PS3 should contact Sony Customer Support. We at HMX are not equipped to deal with system issues, and Sony will have as much information about the patch as we would. You can contact them by using the link below:

Well im past warranty so they told me to pay 169 to send in my console and send me a reverb one back Which is not ok... so who makes the patch ?? i would think you would have more information about the patch then sony would!!! ITS YOUR GAME. But there is a testing issue here and your patch broke my $600 PS3. Maby you can contact sony and tell them you have reports of issues... I all ready know how my call to sony will go as I have all ready made it and they deny that there is any issue... BUT think about who I as the customer have to talk to, a telephone support person who gets payed $10 an hr to read a script!!! There is no help for me at sony support and no help for you figuring out this issue with your update. But there might be some assistance if you Harmonix contacted sony to have them look at the issue. If you can provide me your e mail I will send you my RMA number for my PS3 so that sony can look into it on my dime! ISNT THAT GREAT .. I really think you should be picking up the bill as your patch damaged my system!! and that 160 i could be spending on rb2 peripherals or other games for that matter it is the holidays!!!

YES I did... but if you analyze / troubleshoot what occurred which is what I do as an IT guy every day to solve problems. My issues revolve around the RB2 patch. As ive stated I started the game and was then presented with the update OPTION!! I chose NO causing my ps3 to crash, or because its a linux box underneath HALT the appropriate linux term. The whole system / wireless controllers and hard wired power button all became un responsive as the Blu Ray drive did as well and remains so. Im guessing that the NO OPTION was not scripted correctly leaving they system in an endless loop thus permanently locking my blu ray drive which I have never had any issues with until my system HALTED with this patch. Quite a strange coincidence wouldn't you say.
Well.
It happened to me as well. After downloading the latest patch I created a setlist in Quickplay. For some reason after finishing the 2nd song it would not go to the third. It just stayed on the screen that tell you your percentage.
I let it sit for a few minutes but it just stayed there. I hit the PS button and quit game. It stayed on a black screen for about 10 minutes and then I powered off the system by keeping my finger on the on/off button for a few seconds.
So now the PS3 boots up with no problem but does not recognize any Blu-Ray or DVD's. Zilch.
I'm not blaming HMX or anything just wanted to share that it's not necessarily an isolated incident.
I took HMXHenry's advice and sent a message to Sony. We'll see what happens I guess.

I just called sony again and they take no responsibility for the update!!! THEY told me to contact the game developer regarding this issue!!! so im back here posting again HMX please address this issue did you test on all models of the ps3 the yes and no options for this update!!! Please reimburse my cost for having to have my system repaired directly due to this update!!!

Mud here's the deal... If indeed you said no to the update, then you in fact did not download said update.
Which mean HMX is not responsible for your "Hardware" failure. The 60gb launch versions are the buggiest of all the PS3's out there. This is purely a Sony issue.

Hey there!! That same thing happened to me also last weekend!! Now my PS3 won't load any disks!! I am hoping there is a fix for this and if not someone owes me some serious money. I even clean out the whole hard drive and lost everything all my songs that I downloaded are now gone!! I tryed to put all my information back in and it refused everything i was doing!! I was so pissed that I could not use my PS3 for Rockband I have not touched it since this happened but i keep checkin on here to see if there is a fix!! Hopefully buddy we will have our PS3's running again!! Just wanted to let u know that u are NOT ALONE!!

And as an IT guy you know repeatability of a problem is required to properly analyze/troubleshoot it. So far you are the only one that has reported having this problem with this update that did your sequence of steps. But, I'm not aware of anyone else canceling the update as most us want to play online and know the update is required to continue doing so and just live with it. Get more real data, one off events can be coincidence. Right now you have an unproven hypothesis. Best of luck getting this resolved.

lol im so glad the community supports its members... If i had another console i would test repeatability you are correct!!! It is an important step which i as the consumer should not have to discover / test on my own. Hopefully Harmonix/EA tested there patch correctly. i would hope that they have 2 PS3's of each model series so that they can test both the positive and negative response of there patch before releasing it. I doubt they do but id love to be proved wrong ...
And for the 5 of you having the issue I think I have a fix in the works its looking good so far and ill post later if Im able to succeed

Actually, there's only 1, maybe 2 cases and then there's 2 other people jumping on with completely different problems (even though they might seem similar). Here's a summary.
mynameis_Mud is the only one who said no to the patch and had his blu-ray drive fail and PS3 lock up immediately. He never downloaded the patch, and his PS3 works just fine after the initial lockup, only the Blu-ray drive doesn't work.
eakidd has an odd glitch AFTER downloading and installing RB2 patch where the PS3 doesn't boot to the XMB unless RB2 is loaded. The Blu-ray drive DOES work, however, and the symptoms are completely different, so this is a different problem entirely.
Mex got the patch to download and run correctly and in the middle of gameplay his Blu-ray drive died. It worked fine throughout the patching process.
2HOT4U posted saying he had the same thing happen but didn't provide details other than his Blu-ray drive failing, which means that we can't pin down whether or not it happened after saying no to the patch, in the middle of gameplay after the patch, or a third, completely different and unrelated way.
Considering that 90% of the time I hear of a PS3 being sent in for RMA is due to the Blu-ray drive failing, you can see where the different timing on the two detailed incidents of Blu-ray drives failing are far more likely to be related to common hardware failure than the PS3 RB2 patch. I can't vouch for the third, but I would guess it's coincidence as well.
Everytime a patch comes out for the 360, we get 5-6 posts from people all claiming that the patch caused their 360 to red-ring. The patch didn't cause the red-ring, it's a well known hardware defect, but they all point at the timing and blame the patch anyway. I don't see this as being any different.
eakid is the only one with a problem that can't be chalked up to a common PS3 hardware failure.
o0MeTaL0o

Do a backup of the hard drive, format and start with a fresh install.
If the problem persists then you'll know it's for sure a hardware issue and not a software one, then take it up with Sony.
If you get your Blu-Ray drive back, then chalk it up as a software issue take it up with HMX.
If you really want to take a look at the patch to see if it's messing with the firmware... You can set the PS3 behind a proxy and capture and analyze it. (You're an IT guy... figure that one out on your own.)
But here's the deal.
When you launch any game "while online"; the PS3 calls home to Sony to check the version number with their database, and if there's an update you are prompted to install the "optional" update. By choosing Yes you download the update HMX provided to Sony from Sony's servers. If you choose No then you just won't be able to play online with that game, and you should resume as normal.
Since you said No in your previous statement when you were prompted; you didn't download any HMX software from Sony. As I said before your problem is a result of faulty Hardware, and should be taken up with Sony.

Ok so I’ve fixed my issue. I will run through what you will need to do to fix yours if you are having issues with the blu-ray drive and general PS3 operations like the XMediaBar... I doubt this will fix any other issue but I feel this should help eakidd, Mex, 2HOT4U and goalieg03. If not then your blu-ray drive/ PS3 is probably dead and needs replacement by sony ☹
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can, I suggest you back up your PS3 first. The menu that you will access to can fully erase your PS3 if you choose the wrong option! I do not take any responsibility! Please proceed at your own risk! If you read and follow the instructions exactly you should not loose any data! Feel free to ask questions if you are confused so you don’t make a mistake!! Sorry, I had to say it, I don’t want anyone mad at me if they make a mistake, don’t back up their data and erase it, and then blame me…
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The current version of the ps3 firmware has a “recovery console”.
You access it by
1. Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)
4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
You will now have a screen with these options (I have attached a picture of this screen below)
1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM
I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM
After this, it is going to restart and bring up a screen reading something like “you have Corrupted System Data. Your PS will now replace this data” Then you choose continue and that should be it.
This option reinstalls the system files and drivers inside the PS3 with the original ones that are stored on your hard drive. In this case, it replaced a corrupted driver for the blu ray drive thus fixing my issue and hopefully yours!! This option will only replace all system files thus saving you from loosing any data that’s stored on your hard drive. Again this option does nothing to your hard drive it reads a file from the drive and rewrites it to the PS3 system.
Here is a video of the recovery screen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0SPmkV-jco
If you want a more technical understanding of what this is really doing continue reading. DO NOT NEED TO READ THIS TO COMPLETE REPAIR. The PS3 does not boot from your hard drive as a computer does. It has a flash memory like a cell phone that stores all system files and system firmware updates that you get when the PS3 updates. This is why reformatting your hard drive will not fix your problem, none of the system files are stored on your hard drive (ex. XMB, system firmware, etc.) nor do they run from the drive. However, your hard drive does contain a full backup of your SYSTEM files and thus when you choose option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM it rewrites the original system files from your drive (which aren’t corrupted) back to the flash memory which is corrupted thus fixing the problem.
I HOPE THIS HELPS AND AGAIN DONT HESITATE TO ASK QUESTIONS!!

That sounds like a good find, mynameis_MUD. I'm wondering how many of the other people who have had failed Blu-ray drives in the past could have fixed them just by doing that. I wouldn't have guessed that the PS3's flash would keep the Blu-ray drive from spinning altogether, I assumed that it would have it's own firmware like any PC DVD-ROM drive.
I'm anxious to see if any of the other 3 get their system fixed this way.

well the ps3's have drivers for the blu ray drive and im guessing they where corrupted. All computers use drivers to access there cd / dvd drives as well... and in some cases the drives wont spin until called upon by the os.
Thats why I felt the order of events revolving around my issue where to great to be just passed off as hardware failure. To me this was a software issue from the beginning, I guess thats why im a good it guy I have a great understanding for how things work have since I was a child...

Now that you have it working again you can again do that cancel at the update prompt to retest....
Well, I tried what mynameis_MUD suggested but it didn't work.
It DID tell my I had corrupted data.....but it still doesn't read disks. So I guess my blu-ray drive is toast :(

A while ago I had gotten the error 80010514 after one of the patches which caused my blu-ray to stop working. I did all of the suggestions here and what support told me to do and nothing worked. Although one day I was having a really really bad day and needed to play Rock Band to get out some stuff so I smacked it on the side and it worked... for that one day LOL
I had to send it to Sony to replace it. You guys have got me scared to dl this patch. I don't want to go through that again, although if it's going to happen, I want it to happen now since my warranty will be up in January.

Also, we don't really know if this patch is the cause. At least it doesn't appear to be in my case.

Any time I do play online with my friends we just call each other then put the phone down when playing. LOL
Feel free to add me. Ya never know, we can always figure something out.
Crap I think I'm SOL. The PS3 was a gift and they don't have the receipt anymore. I even went to the store to see if they could reprint it but they can't. CRAP.
Vocalists come through now in RB2 without having to push buttons?
PM me your PSN and I'll add ya. (Whenever my PS3 is fixed that is).

You only need a receipt if you are in the warranty period. If you are paying the $169 (in Canada) they don't need to see the receipt. The people at Sony are helpful and will walk you through it.

Pssst, It's my user name :p
The other option you have if you can't do the warranty is just replace the blue-ray drive in it if you can do it cheaper than Sony. Warranty is void anyways so it's an option and "should" fix your problem.

Thanks. Was trying to get it done through warranty since it's within the first year but I just can't find the receipt.

Ah ok, will add you :)
I think I can get the PS3 fixed locally for cheaper than what Sony will charge. Have to do some hunting around.

I know I'm the new guy, but I have had problems after downloading the patch, and I have a 40GB PS3. Yesterday while in the middle of "Round and Round", the system crashed and I had to reboot. This morning, I was playing just fine until I went to select "Quit Game" from the XMB. The system rebooted again. Now, other games and BD Movies are still working, but this is the first time my PS3 has ever gone a little funky on me. Should I be concerned, or just keep playing and see what happens?
Thanks for your help-
