ok, so i work at a pet store. its by far the easiest job ive had. everyone, including my boss, is awesome and pretty much laid back - as long as everything gets done, you can bs as much as you want all day. great for a college student like myself. simple enough, right?

nope.

new guy starts, new guy seems OK. new guy drops the initial facade and people start complaining about new guy. but everybody deals with new guy for the sake of..whatever the word is. peaceful working, i suppose. hes just annoying, hes not doing any harm.

new guy gets assigned the task of feeding the birds. new guy walks around in circles in front of the bird room. new guy takes a handful of bird seed, and dumps it into tank of a dozen fish priced 100 bucks each. veteran guy and myself think 'wtf'.

so i tell my boss, who in turn calls him over and says 'dont EVER put anything in my fish tanks'. new guy replies with 'veteran told me to do it' (sigh).

just as any workplace, mine is full of gossip. 99 percent of the time, the gossip isnt negative. however, i knew this would happen, so i confronted new guy and i told him that i had told the boss. i explained why (because the fish could get sick - and they did) and how i wasnt trying to get him in trouble, but A) i didnt want the tank to get sick, and B) our DM was coming in the next day and would have flipped. he said OK. all was well.

next day, boss tells me he wants to transfer new guy to a different store and give me the extra hours. DM says there's no room at any store. boss decides that the bird food in the fish tank was the icing on the cake, and will fire him.


today was the day. everything went as usual, and then he gave the whole 'sorry we have to let you go' speech. did mention that the bird food incident was what made the decision. but boss was really nice about it, and even said 'you can put this job down as a reference, ill say only good things, its just not working out for us here.'

what does new guy do? goes up to another worker and tells him 'i just got fired cuz boss is racist'. .....um, youre puerto rican, boss is part puerto rican. at the moment, everyone else is white, yes, but we live in a predominately italian neighborhood. and YOU GAVE THE FISH BIRD FOOD.

and my personal favorite - he goes home, and gets on veteran's myspace page, and says this:

this whole thing just pisses me off. idiot, you got fired because you managed to screw up at one of the most laid back jobs you can have. dont blame me.

At least you have a job where they aren't afraid to fire people... It seems like every job I've been at they won't fire anyone if they do the most STUPIDEST thing ever.

Now as far as laid-back job. I'd say you have competition with me. I work for Papa Johns & I deliver pizzas. It's quite amazing. lol. But working at a pet store doesn't sound too bad. Just the smell is what would kill me.

Thank goodness for MySpace pages for people to publicly admit to the internet the ignorant things they wouldn't necessarily in person. Well, that one comment is pretty indicative of this person's stupidity.

you'll run into lots of people like this, believe it or not...
i wasn't even part of the work-force for 10 years and ran into everything from an employee who accused me of installing a video camera in the employee bathroom (ie. changing the air freshener) to a woman who apparently spread rumors that i was a terrorist for over 2 years until freaking out when she

and yeah, employees who are on their way out or going through any trauma at home are especially terrible to be around. we had one guy get warned by a supervisor that he was being reported to the store-manager the next morning (whom he knew would fire him) so he took a dump into a purse on the sales-floor and then tried to drive a forklift through a concrete wall onto the sales-floor.
and then there was the recovering alcoholic whose husband left her so she came into work wearing only a bath-robe, crying and having a fit that her house had burned down overnight. i told her she could have as much time off as she needed. a few days later, i was informed that she had been arrested for DUI and that her house never burned. :rolleyes:

basically, people can be awful and interacting with them is a pain in the ass.
