For those of you out there playing an instrument I'm curious what bands everyone started out playing. I got back into harmonica about six months ago. Originally I started playing some Beatles and Bob Dylan, Deep Purple and Kum Ba Yah. After I played a few months or so, I started playing some NIRVANA by ear before branching out to other bands like Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam. Now if I know I song I can pretty much play it. I can even play some Metallica and Bat Out Of Hell for instance. If I know I song I can play a good version of it. The better I know the song the better I can play it. So what bands did you guys learn your instrument/s on?

Black Sabbath was big for me in the beginning.

Why is Nirvana in all caps?

First song I ever learned was Smells Like Teen Spirit, then I worked for about 2 months to build up the endurance for Run To The Hills.

What's funny is I just played my first Green Day song today. I was doing a lot of Beatles, Bob Dylan and Kum Ba Yah When I fist started (doing tabs) I think NIRVANA was on of the first bands I played by ear if not the first. I knew they were good to learn on. So I started playing a lot NIRVANA by ear before playing other bands by ear.

It's how Cheezer spells it and Cheezer is the man!

EDIT: So basically NIRVANA, AIC, Deep Purple, Bob Dylan and The Beatles for me. (the rest I started playing later)

I learned the guitar playing NIRVANA, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Cream, STP, Soundgarden, RATM, et cetera. I never got a teacher or books or any ****, so I just self-taught myself and looked up tabs sometimes.

For me, it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Snow is awesome on guitar. (In real life. NOT in Rock Band.)

I have a teacher.

I'd be lost without one.

I'm basically self taught myself. However when I first started playing years ago I had a harmonica booklet. Since I started playing again I've been teaching myself.

I found out awhile ago about Kurt saying before that, because of it's importance, the word "NIRVANA" should always be capitalized (the WORD'S importance, not the just because it was to call his band important) and I shared it with some friends on here and it caught on.

Haha, thanks Stewie man! :D

Yeah, at first, I wanted a teacher, but my parents couldn't get me one, so instead of doing something about it, I *****ed to all my friends that I bragged to about starting to play guitar that it was my parents' fault that I hadn't started yet. Then, eventually, one of my friends' (this particular friend is in his twenties or thirties and married) dads, who is a self-taught drummer, at church talked some sense into me and got me to start self-teaching myself.

nirvana, black sabbath, simon & garfunkel, minor threat, and elton john were all notably important for my beginning as a musician.

I think I can say with confidence from the poll that NIRVANA's catalogue is a learning musician's best friend.

I started out with Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla when I did finally learn a song on bass. I mostly been playing through stuff that my teacher gives me to work with.(The hardest being raking because I don't think my hands have the proper callouses). I did learn parts of Hemispheres by Rush and The Red and the Black by BOC from my bass teacher.

I'm going to start learning more songs on my own to help me with the band I'm in currently.(This week is Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy, White Room will the next song for me to learn. Through this process I learned most of Talking Heads-Psycho Killer, Last Train to Clarksville, and Aeris' Theme from Final Fantasy 7).

OMG I did Sweet Child O' Mine on harmonica for the first time today! I also did These Eyes by The Guess Who for the first time as well. I did good versions for the firs time to. I'm trying to branch out my playing skills and play songs I've never played before.

EDIT: I almost forget that when I was first started out playing by ear I was playing a lot of Hendrix. Which is kind of odd I guess cause he's more advanced but I know their songs so well that I just thought what the hell I'll give it a shot. I did pretty good versions of their songs to.

I be curious to see your playing, will you eventually do videos or no dice?

I don't really like to do videos of myself online. However I have performed in front of small crowds of people ( friends, family etc) and they've all given me good reviews, They think I'm doing very good especially since I just got back into harmonica about 6 months ago. I would like to perform in front of larger crowds with my brother when he gets good at guitar. (he's been playing for a few months and knows some riffs) When he gets good in about five years or so I'm gonna try to convince him to be a NIRVANA/Green Day cover band with me. We need a singer though.

hey stewie, do you have any sort of recording apparatus?
if so, we should start a forum cover band. i can do synths and drums. we can find some string-players and a smokin'-hot singer.

if this is a bad idea, it's only because i'm incredibly drunk. or my imaginary little brother typed this whole post.

I'd play some strings, although if we need a smokin'-hot singer, then I couldn't sing.

I learned to read music in school, then when i was trying to learn guitar, I picked up some Rush books that had the chords on them & tabs... that was pretty much how i learned how to play guitar.

I could provide bass tracks if necessary, I just need to get some recording equipment.
