Why am I not shocked. 10 seconds after using the guitar in the store demo I knew it would be ridiculously unreliable.
It's blatantly obvious the strum bar WILL NOT hold up over time. Mine is already acting up, and it's probably a matter of days before I'm contacting customer support for a new one.
I just want to take a moment to congratulate Harmonix on somehow screwing up the single most basic part of their new game franchise. The guitar strum bar. Bravo! Even I didn't think something so simple could be screwed up so badly.

I mean, yea, im not bitter, the game is incredible and has provided me with tons of fun, but until harmonix will produce and distribute working guitars im kinda pissed.

I am. Should that stop me from trying to warn others that this game is just borked? People need to know that the strum bar on the guitar is straight up screwed and needs to be fixed.

Did you at least go through EA support, or did you return the box to your store?

I wonder how long they've known about the strum-bar being defective.
Listen in the very beginning for the patron to comment about the broken strum bar. Video was posted to YouTube on November 4th.

If the video won't play here is the direct link... http://youtube.com/watch?v=hxDxR5NHNDo
....And for the record, my guitar lost down-strumming capabilities after 8 hrs of play.

This is kinda unacceptable for a $170 game. They should recall all guitars and go back to the old strum bar from the GH games. How did this major flaw in a very important piece of equipment get through QA testing is what I want to know.

Ouch. These things drop faster than 360's die.
You've gotta laugh, really. The really loud plastic-on-wood sound from using the drums is alright, but that comparatively quiet strum bar click just had to go!

I'm guessing that they were pressed for time, and the guitar development was either on the back-burner the whole time as an over-confident afterthought to the game itself, or it was simply thrown together at the end without enough play-testing.
Either way, they weren't using their own guitars to test this game. There is no way, unless EA forced them to go ahead with shotty hardware.

First of all, I applaud your efforts for fixing your strum-bar, but what are you going to do when your defective guitar loses overdrive activation, or headset port quits functioning and you aren't covered by warranty?
I would if it didn't void my warranty, because a defective guitar with a homebrew fix and no warranty isn't quite as satisfying as owning a functioning guitar covered by warranty (which is exactly what I paid cash for.) Otherwise I'd rip that thing apart like it was an iPhone in need of unlocking.

My guess is the problem was caused in manufacturing. The pictures and descriptions I have seen imply that the problem is caused by a slightly loosened screw. This is the manufacturer's fault, not the designer's. This would also explain why the versions they tested (which were likely short-run produced) may not have shown this problem. I also believe their manufacturing was out-sourced to another company.
Also, they were playing with Strats during E3, so it wasn't a last-minute design. More reason I think this was a manufacturing problem.

My guitar is acting up as well just waiting for it to die.
Was dumb and assumed that the box saying most music controllers would work meant that there was an existing guitar that would work with my ps3. So wasted 15 on the pelican adapter (i'll use it for my warhawk so not too dissapointed). Made a deal at gamecrazy before buying gh3 to let me return it if the controller didn't work so long as I didn't open the game. Thank god or I would of just screwed myself out 110 more dollars. I would not have bought rockband if it was a 3 person game I am dissapointed. My guitar was missing notes within hours of getting it but I pawned it off on a friend and simply went with the drums. Its becomming more and more noticable though I give it a week tops before its gone sad thing is I think I got one of the good ones. I've heard some disturbing cracking sounds come out of my drum pedal. I thought it was me from lifting my foot but sadly no becouse my friend keeps his planted on it like a pro and I've heard the same disturbing sound. I'd imagine it doesn't have long to live as well. Drums tend to be bit off but I'm going to try wrapping them like I read in another post since the only thing I have to lose is the effort in doing so if it fails. Lot like the warranty I would lose trying to get my guitar to work on something more than upwards reliably. There is the warranty for returning but when has it ever been acceptable to sell an apperently flawed product just becouse the customer can waste time and effort getting it fixed.
PS3 box should really read only works with USB mics and RB peripherals. That most is a lie anyway you read it. Does not work with anything other than those. If I wanted a game that might be complete in 2 months I would have bought the game in 2 months. I have never been this dissapointed with a game. Its fun but the leader boards are dominated now by the wealthy or ones lucky enough to know someone with RB and a PS3 (I'm the only person I even know that owns a ps3 in r/l) while my 3 man crew is left in the dust. I had first on drums for several songs for a little while still have second on one. My band was ranked 47 and playing several hours a day we're now in the deep hundreds. The boards aren't even fair at this point becouse of this crap. I was willing to pay 310 dollars for a single game (I don't even make nearly that much in a week) thats with the 2 year warranty from wal-mart (17.99) just to have 4 players and in the end I'm left with an empty pocket, sarcasm, and people all quoting "most" like that means something what a joke. I will not accept most for the PS3. Maybe the 360 but not the ps3. If they can make the box different enough to say ps3 or 360 they can edit their disclaimer as well. I would return this POS in a heartbeat and buy it in a few months when it is complete if I could but sadly that just isn't an option. Never thought I would be required to read a games community forum before buying it to realize I would be wasting my money.
Going to be my only post just wanted to vent sorry for those wasting time reading this.

the problem isnt poor manufacturing, the problem is poor design and VERY poor play testing.
after 9 hours of play testing, we found out that the strum bar switch, especially when strumming down will ben out of place. there is a tiny copper switch that activates when you switch down. this is an extremely poor and ineffecient design. tyhe guiar hero 3 guitar, though has its flaws, its designed MUCH better. after more than 10-15 hours of use, the rockband guiar strum down will bend and break, making the down strum no longer functional.
nice job ea.
