View Full Version : Female leads? Can we get more?

BannSidhe

One distinct thing to note is the lack of female leads. My wife prefers singing generally for Rok Band, and well, many of the male leads are just way out of her range. Is it possible to get more female bands for DLCs?

thats a cool idea and kinda reminds me of a good band i forgot about evanescence

Well Heart is always good. I guess Paramore has a couple good songs and evances are really the only bands with female leads that have made any good songs

My Mom sings for Rock Band, and had no trouble singing male sung songs. Just tell your wife to sing in a different octave

maybe some more garbage or Flyleaf?

Well I usually hate female leads, and I detest evanescence. The only actual decent bands with good female singers I can think of is Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, both of which I would love to be in RB.

its a tricky situation because it is unfair to have no female leads but there arent that many great female lead songs and every song that becomes available for download is taking up space where a better song could be there

WhiplashTW
11-25-2007, 06:51 AM
no more tricky than anything else they put up for download. if you don't like something you don't have to download it. i for one will never download anything i dont like. i just got the metallica pack and a few others, didn't even look twice at the Queens of the stone age pack. no interest in it.

"better" is your opinion anyway. we all don't have the same tastes.

it has nothing to do with opinion...its a simple matter of sample sizes...if 90% of rock songs feature male vocals...there will be much more good songs featuring male leads, its common sense...there will also be much more people who want songs with male leads

it isnt saying that female bands are worse...im just saying that there are more good songs from male leads...it seems pretty indisputable to me

Yes, there are more good songs from male bands...that's because, statistically, there are more male rock bands than female.

Having said that, though, I think Harmonix is losing sight of something important. In a party situation, who is most likely going to be doing the singing? The females. And how many couples have bought this game, specifically so that the woman in the couple can sing (a la Karaoke Revolution) while her husband plays guitar or plays drums? Lots of girls like to sing; yeah, some of us will pick up the guitar for a while, or try the drums, but reality is, the real attraction to many women for this game is the singing -- when the majority of the songs are hard male rock, or songs that we've never heard of, the game loses its attraction real fast.

We just had a big party of 8 people over at our house to play this. The only people that would sing in the party were the women. The guys were not willing to make fools of themselves in front of everyone else. So it would behoove Harmonix to give us females just a few more songs that are more in our voice range -- sorry, but I do NOT sound anything like James Hetfield or The Beastie Boys, and while I'll give it my best shot, it's not particularly fun for me to do so.

How about some stuff from:

Heart
Pat Benatar
The Bangles
The Pretenders
Lacuna Coil
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Jefferson Airplane
Evanescence

Since these would be available as downloads, those of you that want to stick to manly songs can do so and not "waste" your hard drive space.

For female vocals bands I want

I especially want:
Nightwish (Dark chest of wonders , 7 days to the wolves)(PLEASE)
Paramore

I would still like:
Flyleaf
Evanessence

You could also use:
Heart
Lacuna coil

Edit : For the record... I have sang the Flyleaf song... and would be completely willing to sing Nightwish , Paramore , More flyleaf , and Evanessence songs

I am a guy.... I don't care... I like doing it :D

Most definitelyI There does need to be more content for and from female performers. I completely agree with the list above. All good artists that would definitely be must haves for me.

I think this summarizes almost *any* argument that can be made in favor of my proposal.

I have no problem attempting to sing, I bought KR to do so with my wife, when KR 2+3 came out and were duets, we LOVED it....granted, she didn't like the male+male duets so much, but overall, it was very enjoyable.

GH came out, and she didn't like that so much. She plays it a tiny bit, but never really past medium's first tier...and the rest easy.

For Rock Band, she's more willing to try the drums. Everyone I know is willing to try the drums once they see them set up though! (Which is a huge plus to me.) But, I'd really love to be able to play more songs where she can sing along easier, since that's what she'd like to do more. We're doing the World Tour stuff and some of that stuff is brutal for me, let alone her. Since DLC stuff gets mixed into it, this would really help out her ability to complete some of those easier, and feel like shes contributing more than humming.

Sure, but that doesn't add that many. And I can't say I particularly like that many of the female songs that they did pick. You just can't make the assumption that just because a girl is singing a song, that it's a) a good song, or b) fun to sing.

So far, out of Rock Band, there's about 3 or 4 songs I love to sing, and 6 songs I can tolerate singing. The rest? I either actively despise, or have never heard of them (and so have to hum or fake it as best I can during BWT mode). I'm not sure how many songs there are in the game (60?), but that's a pretty pitiful ratio. Playing BWT is in some ways agonizing, especially during the Mystery Sets, because I just know I'm going to get some crap song from the 70's, or Stone Temple Pilots, or the Beastie Boys.

Watching the people playing guitar and drums yesterday, people were much more excited about ALL of the songs when it came to the guitar/drumming aspects of them -- it doesn't matter if it's a song you've never heard of when it comes to guitar/drum, because you can still just play it without knowing it. There were only a few songs that people were like "Dude, that sucked," after playing it, and they tried just about everything on the song list (my husband unlocked everything during solo mode).

Yeah, some Heart, Pretenders and Fleetwood Mac, B-52s, Cranberries, Concrete Blonde, 4 nonblondes, and Eurythmics would be great! I don't have a problem singing male vocals though and like most of the songs. We definitely need more female songs though. And more Alternative rock, 80's alternative too.

After 4 hrs on Thanksgiving day trying to scream out some of the songs, I ended up with no voice to scream at people at 6am at the Black Friday sales. :p
Saying to have the women sing in a differnt octave only works so well. I have tried. And you have to stay one octave up or down from the original or if you sing in expert mode, it only gives you "strongs".
And I second the notion that most guys are not willing to sing. You have two camps, ones that can and wont "make a fool of themselves" and ones that cant sing, and dont care how they sound.
There are some male singers that I can sing in their range. (some Eagles, I can pull off)
And I cant sing as high as Amy (evanesence). So some good mid-range stuff would be good.

Definitely put me down for some Breeders, Cranberries, Luscious Jackson, & more Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I'm really hoping we get "Canonball" from the Breeders. Thats such a fun & kickass song. And I wouldn't be surprised if "Zombie" was available for DLC within the next few months. Thats always a karaoke favorite.

Joan Jett
Alanis Morissette (Jagged Little Pill)
Yeah Yeahs Yeahs

The Cranberries
No Doubt
Schoolyard Heroes

Those would be my suggestions. (I realize some of the bands I mentioned are already on there, so more content from them in the future would be great!)

I have to agree with ShotsFired. I am a big No Doubt fan and would love to have as much of their old stuff as possible on Rock Band. My wife would then be able to sing some songs in her range. Return of Saturn and Rock Steady are good, but Tragic Kingdom and earlier are great No Doubt albums and have great songs.

Out of all of these that I listed, all I REALLY want is "Cannonball" by the Breeders, and "Y Control" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

But I'll take any of them. It just seems that the two mentioned above would be more likely. Well, I guess they DID put the New Pornographers in the game, it just wasn't a song sung by Neko Case.

Well the problem my wife and sister were having was that they just didn't know any of the songs on the default songlist since they're more into poppy stuff like Maroon 5 when it comes to bands. I can't really expect them to know stuff like Cherry Bomb or Tom Sawyer. (My attempt at singing Cherry Bomb should have been captured on tape though as I thoroughly butchered the song to hell in back, to the point Ihad my band mates in stitches and couldn't play their sections) Hell, I don't know some of the songs and I like my rock music.

It's not a problem for all females -- I can do it, but I'm an alto and can go deeper. If you are a soprano and can't manage an active change I guess it's a problem. I love a bunch of the male leads. But it's a fairness thing too. They just should have more good female songs too. IMHO.

You and me both! A friend of mine runs a fan based internet radio station called Progulus. That list is from his "Ladies of Prog" lunch time playlist. The best bands from that list (imnsho) are Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, The Gathering (old, don't like their new stuff too much), Charisma, After Forever, and Nightwish. Yeah, I went back and listened to it and I totally agree. There's some rice shaker / maraca / tambourine thing in the background that would be a cool thing for the singer to do throughout most of the song. How cool would that be if they could somehow implement the Dual Shock to act as a separate instrument for the singer. RB2?

Personally I think these songs would be fun as hell:

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit, Somebody to Love
Scandal - The Warrior (I mean they put it in Guitar Hero :/)
Heart - Barracuda, Crazy on You, Magic Man
Blondie- Call Me, One Way or Another
Lacuna Coil - Heir of a Dying Day, Swamped(They're kind of difficult because a lot of their songs have mixed vocals)
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score, Planet Hell (maybe?)
Cranberries - Electric Blue, Salvation, Zombie
Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly
No Doubt - Sunday Morning

The problem with doing more obscure songs is that first of all people might not know if the songs have a female lead and secondly it isn't as much fun to sing if you have no clue what the hell you're doing

I think Melissa Ethridge and Belly are some REALLY good suggestions ! In the case of bands like Evanescence et all, the dominating keyboard/piano in many songs would be a bit too distracting, but Belly and Melissa Ethridge are pure rock. I also like the suggestion of a lot of the classics such as the Pretenders, Heart, Blondie, Scandal, And Jefferson Airplane (or Jefferson Starship, or Starship, or whatever name they chose to be called for the song)

For a Belly DLC Pack, I would suggest "Puberty," "Super-Connected," and "King" because every instrument, and the vocals, would be unique, challenging, and fun. Also, the lyrics themselves are something the female singers (players) would really enjoy ! I just really wish there was more that could be done for the bass track in the song "Bees" because the rest of the instruments and vocals would be a lot of fun, and the song itself would be a great change of pace from the rest of the harder-hitting rock in the game.

My wife is dying for some Blondie. Heck, I buy anything with a female lead right now for her. We were pumped for The Sounds (Maja and the band are a blast live), but the song that was chosen was probably one of the worst on that album. I would have liked "Ego", "Queen Of Apology", or "Painted By Numbers" instead - but it was still cool to see them offered at all.
I'd love to see some Rilo Kiley offered too - perhaps "Portions For Foxes", "The Moneymaker", and "It's A Hit"?

I'm rather surprised no one else seems to know of Dark Moor. Eh, happens. They were only around for a short bit, but the singer is in a new band now, Dreamaker.

It's always good to have some female lead offerings. My gf isn't as interested in the vocals (I enjoy doing them more than she does as a change of pace). She doesn't want to be seen as the weak link on vocals or bass. She wants to rock on the guitar!

There's no reason women can't sing any of the current songs, however. If I can sing the female parts of songs, they can do the reverse. Just need to change octaves. As long as the pitch is right on the note, you can move up or down an octave if you need to in order to sing the song.

Oh definitely No Doubt and B-52's! I have a hard time seeing how Siouxie would work out, but I am sure I would enjoy the vocals.

I have friends who would just die if Neko Case was added!
Heart
The Breeders
Luscious Jackson
The Donnas (was one of my fave tunes from GH1!)

How could you fail to please everybody with No Doubt and Blondie? These have to be #1 and #2 to be added.....the party is much better when the girls are having fun too.

bump we need more support! I would like to see DLC "The Bangles"! They have some fun songs that would be perfect for this game. EX: Walk like an Egyptian, Manic Monday (great for ppl who have daughters that play), In your Room.

(Please understand this is a family/group game and im thinking of my wife and niece when making this post. REMEMBER DLC)

Evanescence

Since these would be available as downloads, those of you that want to stick to manly songs can do so and not "waste" your hard drive space.

yes!! thank you !! this need bumping lol more female lead vocals.
get some Fleetwood Mac in there as well as the ones mentioned above.

I would love some Breeders and some PJ Harvey. And Crawl Home (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtARUOnFk7E) by the Desert Sessions would be pretty cool too.

Is there a schedule for the DLC posted somewhere? And have there been any female leads in any of the DLC packs yet?
