Hey guys, let's try and compose the greatest African American band of all time!
I'll start with
Jimi Hendrix
Vernon Reid
both on lead
Kalel on bass
and those are all I'm really familiar with. Not sure who would mesh well and make a great band, so start er' up!

Fishbone....... everysingle member.... Not really rock, per se, but wow, those guys play some great music.

Clearly, Hendrix.
Now...I don't know if this counts, but I'm saying it anyway.
Killswitch Engage.

KSE is not an all African-American band, but I do agree with voting Howard Jones as a pretty good vocalist.

That's why I brought 'em up.
Clearly they're not all black, but he is. And too awesome for words.
In a hilarious sense.
I mean, the guy looks like he'd be one of those motivational image victims, but...he's not. And, he's in an awesome band. Which he sings for.
Not too common, and still awesome.

No, no, no, H.R. should be the vocalist.

No, no, no, H.R. should be the vocalist.
Very good point.... I guess it depends on which way we want this band to progress. Are we looking for a melodic metal sound or a harcore / punk sound?

Billy Cobham can drum and Mike Alexander can play bass.

I think it should be a progressive psychedelic blues-metal funk fusion band.

Along with H.R., I'd throw in Dr. Know, Daryl Jenifer, and Earl Hudson, also from Bad Brains. He's not rock, but Robert Johnson is worth mentioning.

Buddy Rich wasn't African-American or Rock.

Don't know how I thought that, but the OP didn't mention anything about Rock.

I'm guessing it was Buddy Miles. He was the black drummer that played for Jimi Hendrix in the Band of Gypsys along with Billy Cox. Hell Band of Gypsys was a African American mega band by itself.

You got to have Lajon Witherspoon on vocals. There is just no african american ultimate band without him on the vocals. If You dont know who he is look it up.

Fishbone and Living Color (or is it Living Colour?) are just as worthy as Bad Brains as a answer!

Living Colour are okay, but I wouldn't compare them to Bad Brains. I can't say I'm familiar with Fishbone though.

I was expecting you to reply "yes", but this is even more annoying. Anyway, what would you recommend checking out from each band?

I was never a LC fan. But Fishbone can range from ska-ish stuff to Faith No More-esque rock and everything in between. Grab The Reality of My Surroundings or Truth and Soul as starting points.
