okay i realise that this is your opinion but Joey Jordison is recognised as one of the greatest rock drummers ever. and the fact that slipknot have 2 percusionists as well doesn't mean anything. they just add a strong back beat. they are like to the drummin as bass is to guitar. If u still dont believe me check out people = **** and duality, in my opinion the finest examples of slipknot drumming.

I Want To Hold Your Hand- Ringo Star....

Kidding. I've always liked Cream's drum parts.

BUT.... (hear me out)... It's not a drum solo but I think the changes and the fills are great.

The Pipettes song 'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me'. Now this is a British pop group with a 60's sound. IT IS NOT ROCK. Keep and open mind and listen to the drums on this song they are great.

Hey don't diss ringo i think he is really underrated, check out Rain and A Day in the Life if u don't believe me. As for Cream they have some amazing drum parts. Toad, White Room, Rollin And Tumblin and Sweet Wine are among my favourites. I've heard of the pipettes but i aint heard them. i must check them out

Yes he does. He can do some of the best fills. AND I don't know how he does his changes so quickly. Just freakin' cool.

Really Neil Peart is amazing, his solo on YYZ live is pretty good, or any other Rush song after the first album. The fact that he writes the lyrics, as well, is pretty kick ass. I have to say that John Bonham is good, just because he can ****ing blast, so I guess his best performance would be Moby Dick, just because it's his solo. Of course, there is always Keith Moon, Dave Grohl, and Andrew Forsman (Fall of Troy). Oh yeah, and Buddy Rich, but he's jazz... his best performance is Birdland.

Yeah, i'd say my list of drummers is probably
#1 John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
#2 Kieth Moon (The Who)
#3 Niel Peart (Rush)
#4 Ginger Baker (Cream)
#5 Joey Jordison (Slipknot)

I like Dave Grohl as well... as a drummer at least.

How about you check out some of the older a7x stuff. All songs are great considering he was still in HIGHSCHOOL while recording it. I bet it took Slipknot ages to get their act together while recording while The Revered has been smashing out perfect recordings 1st try since his first EP. He is on his way to greatness.

As for staying on topic: I completely agree with the #1 listed on this post.

I agree about the Rev thing

Actually the whole band in general is pretty damn underrated.

That seems to happen when a band gets popular tho. Like with Slipknot, even tho Joey can stand in for Satyricon (and I dare anyone to argue that Frost isn't a god beyond the drumset), he's still called a ****ty drummer. Metal fans are just stupid like that, the bigger a band gets, the more they seem to hate them and assume that their increase in popularity is due to a decrease in talent.

If you like Dave Grohl's work, theres a version of him playing Avon live, he does quite a sweet solo at 2:55 if you don't wanna watch the whole thing just skip to it (Great performance your missing out on by the by)

Yeah, but there's no denying that Lars is the biggest wank in the music industry. He can play though, I suppose. Personally, on a different genre, I totally went against Fall Out Boy when they became popular, I admit it. But they're **** anyway, so I guess it's not a good example.

Haha Fall Out Boy has always been a mystery to me. Sure, they can make some damn catchy songs, I'll even admit there's about 3 I actually like...but, honestly, has anyone ever seen them live? I saw them at Warped Tour two years ago and Jesus Christ do they suck. I figured it might've just been that performance, but everytime I hear them play live, they butcher any song they've ever written. It will always confuse me as to how they amassed such a large audience when they can't play their own damn songs.

On another note tho, their drummer actually isn't too bad.

For the best rock drummers, i'd go with:
1) Danny Carey - Tool (frickin amazing, really tasteful, plus he can really blow you away if he needs to [46 &2, Ticks and Leeches,])
2) Gene Hoglan - Strapping, Dark angel, Death (he's just the king of metal, amazing speed and precision, check out his work on Death's "Symbolic" album)
3) Tomas Haake - Meshuggah (he's got speed and his patterns are amazingly syncopated, i can't even keep track of all the polyrythms he uses)
4) Martin Lopez - Opeth (overlooked by a lot of people, he can groove like a motherf***** and can still bust out heavy double bass)
5) Gavin Harrison - Porcupine Tree (skill-wise probably the most amazing drummer on this list, but i'm not a huge fan of his style [his dvd's blow me away])

Normally I'm the kind of guy who throws up a bit in his mouth at an extended drum solo, but Dio did a show a few years back where during "Gypsy" (or "Tarot Woman", I can't remember) the drummer just went ape**** for like five minutes. It was pretty awesome.

Going way, way back, the extended drum solo during Inagodadavida, by Iron Butterfly has always been a favorite of mine. I've never verified it, but I've always heard rumors that when they played live he would hold a 40oz upright clenched in his teeth during the solo, and after he finished the first one, someone from the band would switch it out for a second one...

dunno if it's true, but it sounds cool

Other than that, Danny Carey...best. drummer. ever.

DarthRick10 thanks for sticking up for Ringo...he really is a Great Drummer...he just never got a chance to shine because of the era of music he played in..the 60's...if he was in the 80's hed have great drum solos as well...but in the 60's it was all about phycadellic or mellow guitar and voice music...which Paul McCartney and John Lennon did great...but ringo is a very good drummer..and not a half bad singer either

The guys on this thread talking about popular music make me want to cry. Slipknot has 0 talent kids, sorry to burst your bubble. The reason they are liked is because they drive a fan base of ohio kids that know nothing better. Real drumming, and I hate to say this, is pretty dead at the moment. Metal focuses more on guitar work than anything, the drums can be great, but they will go unheard if a guitarist is lacking.

Slipknot will always be bad.
Tool is bad. They are terrible live, thats 1/2 a legendary band.

Although there are plenty of talented ones, I don't generally acknowledge most death/speed metal drummers. I think a lot of that style of music really comes down to physical strength and chops, which is note-worthy but not really that musical.

I've always been very impressed with Danny Carrey. Not only is he really tasteful and technical, but he's so clean and that isn't always easy to come by in drummers. Other standouts are Neil Peart from Rush, Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus, and Stewart Copeland of The Police.

The funk/jazz scene really has some of the world's most incredible drummers. Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Jack Dejohnette, Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich, and many more.

There was a concert that featured Weckl, Colaiuta, and Gadd on YouTube:

I'm guilty of not paying much attention to the drums in songs. However, there are a couple performances which have stood out in my mind.

I watched a live Godsmack performance a couple years ago where the lead singer, Sully Erna, got behind the drums and did a sort of 'drum duet' with their current drummer, and it sounded amazing. (Note: I am NOT a fan of Godsmack, I just thought this performance was neat)

Also, Blind Guardian encorporated some fantastic, driving drum beats on their "Night at the Opera" album using a specialised double-kick bass drum. The speed and intensity of the drum felt almost primal, and nonetheless AWESOME.

Thats very understandable. With the way that music today is mixed, they usually push the drums way to the back, where they bring guitar and vocals way to the front. A great example of how music used to be mixed would be pretty much any album by The Roots (its hip-hop, but not the "is that you fiddy" hip-hop they push on MTV, so don't be put off). The way its mixed may have something to do with the fact that the producer is also the drummer in the group, ?uestlove ;)

The drum parts aren't always the most lively, but you can actually hear what the fills and such really can contribute to songs. ?uestlove is also an awesome drummer and producer in general.

Hmm.

Manowar - Triumph of Steel - Achilles there is a drum part that owns.

Kiss - Alive II - God of Thunder. i always liked that song. Also liked Carr Jam.

Many many metallica dub base songs that were great!

I'm surprised only one person has mentioned Jimmy Chamberlain so far. He's my favorite drummer. Siva and I Am One are my two favorite songs for drums, although Won't Get Fooled Again by the Who and anything by Rush are up there as well.

The single greatest rock drum performance I have ever seen was Neil Peart's solo when I saw Rush live last August. It was ridiculous.

Yes he is, the Roots in general don't get the respect they deserve. If you ever have a chance to see them live, do. They put on one of the best shows I have ever seen in any genre.

I've seen enough love for the greats in the genre (Bohnam, Moon, Baker, Pert & Star) so I'm gonna throw out Mitch Mitchell from The Jimi Hendrix Expreience. He was a fantastically talented drummer that was overshadowed by playing with the patron saint of guitar.

Stian Lindaas Kristoffersen is an excellent drummer, one of the best I've ever seen live.

9. Hot For Teacher - Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)

You realize that aside from this song, the beginning of Jamie's Cryin' and the fills on Drop Dead Legs, Alex's drums are among the most boring out there. I believe that was by design, however. Eddie was clearly the showpiece not to be intruded upon by anyone else on stage.

Neil Peart is my personal Lord of Drums. Seen them 5 times in concert and always find myself focusing on his performance, and that's with Alex and Geddy who can more than hold their own.

I also really like the drumming of Chad Smith for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he may not be considered a "great" but I love his style.

ur aware that slipknot has a drummer and two percussionists and all of them combined (in my opinion) arent as good as avenged sevenfold...

Joey from Slipknot...Korn is one of the best drum performances ive ever seen in concert.

As for your crack on the other percussionist. if you were to listen to slipknot or see them live... which i see you havent. they produce little for the music. they are more side drums and backing vocals. they are a monkey show. there drums are on springs and they just bounce around the whole time like they are kids at a playground.

and ive seen Avenged live and have thier new cd...... yea not impressed.

Neither Joey, nor the drummer for Korn, are great drummers. Korn's drummer sucks, and Joey is not all that good.

it is my humble opinion that among these other fine drummers that Phil Collins deserves mention. chuckle if you like, but go youtube him and decide yourself. plus, he can sing lead while he drums, that's impressive in and of itself.

I'm kind of jumping in the middle of the whole conversation here, but I've always had one drum performance in the forefront of my mind for something like this. It's not necessarily the best, but it'd ahve been awesome to see. At some point in 1977 Led Zeppelin was in Los Angeles and Keith Moon of The Who (who was apparently friends with most of Zeppelin, Jones, Page and he had worked with Jeff Beck in the past) came on stage and playing in Bonham's place. Later (either that night or the next, I forget) Moon and Bonham played together on a few songs. I'm not sure if they had two kits or or they switched off or what. The only pics I've seen are of Bonham watching Moon and the bootleg I heard (which is amazing) is Moon playing with the rest of Zeppelin.

But yeah, thats got to rank up there as one of the greatest stadium drumming events of all time. At least I think so.

Oh. And I'm willing to except any and all flack for this, but I've always thought Buddy Rich was one of the greatest drummers ever.

They are terrible live, thats 1/2 a legendary band.

actually joey is pretty damn talented. if you google "slipknot drum solo" you will probably see what i mean. and as for tool sucking live? i thought they were awesome. not too many bands these days try to go for more than playing their most popular songs jammed together. tool goes for an approach more in line with old school Psychedelic. the experience as a whole is more important than whether they play all the most downloaded songs off itunes.
