View Full Version : Song titles same as band's name?

This is a very curious phenomenon, one I never really understood... but some bands name a song of theirs AS the band's name. How many songs out there are like this? The only ones that jump to mind right away are...
Motorhead by Motorhead
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Bad Company by Bad Company
Ironically, all three of those songs were also released on albums that were titled after the band.
What are some other songs like this?
Edit: yes, Motorhead was originally written by Lemmy while he was in Hawkwind, but it was performed by Motorhead on their album Motorhead, so it still counts :P

I felt compelled to make a song titled after my band's name. It was easy enough, with a band name like Only One.
I'm not sure why. It just seemed like any easy thing to do.

D.O.A.
Forbidden has a song Forbidden Evil. Forbidden Evil was their original name.
Dunno if this counts but MDC frequently titled albums and songs to match the acronym ie Millions of Damn Christians or Missile Destroyed Civilization. However they only have Dead Cops and not Millions of... Along opposite lines Government Issue had the song G.I.
Does Stray Cat Strut count? There are quite a few tunes like that as well where the band name is incorporated into a theme song of sorts.

What about Godsmack taking their name from someone else's song. I think thats even cheesier.

Thats pretty cheesy too, at least they made up for their cheesyness by rocking a lot of people's socks off for a lot of years.

I'm not sure about Bad Company or Iron Maiden, but I know that in the cases of Motorhead and Sabbath, the song came first, and the bands named themselves after the songs when made to change their original names for one reason to another, from Earth to Black Sabbath, and from Bastard to Motorhead.

Would The Ramones' R.A.M.O.N.E.S. count? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.A.M.O.N.E.S.

The name Iron Maiden came before the song (it was inspired by some British flick that Steve Harris and Dave Murray saw together). I'm pretty sure the song had already been written, but had different lyrics at the time.

It's just weird to me, personally I don't like it. The songs can be great, but the concept of naming them like that is kind of annoying.
It's like why the word "Wars" doesn't show up in any of the Star Wars titles... it would sound weird and repetitive. Which is why, despite not being a horrible show, the title "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" irks me.
OKAY< I won't hijack the thread with Star Wars talk...

How has that enver occurred to me? I only disliked it because it wasn't good. But I was a little disappointed that the entire prequel triology wasn't named Clone Wars: <title>.

A little off-topic, but something annoying anyway.
Flogging Molly has an album called Swagger. But their song called Swagger is actually on the Drunken Lullabies album. Why is that?

Same with Waiting for the Sun by The Doors. That one didn't show up until 2 albums later, on Morrison Hotel.

Different band then. There was a local band in columbus back in the 90's called watershed. generic cowpunk, which i say with a caveat that every band in columbus is a cowpunk band.
