I have been playing rock band with my friend all week. he has the xbox, i have the game. when he had to leave, i realized my game was in the xbox still, so we plugged it back in and it had the Red ring. it sucks for me, but it sucks a lot worse for him. does anyone know how the red ring is caused? thanks.

If it's an older 360 the solder they used on the cpu or gpu (can't remember which) fails when it gets too hot. Basicly they used solder that melts and causes bad connections when the xbox gets hot. M$ upped the warrenty to 3 years because of this problem.

It may work for a while but then it's just going to keep popping up RROD more and more. I would tell him to calli M$ customer support and get a replacement.

Well, I've gone through two replacements, not sure exactly what. If he has it in an enclosed space like a cabinet or something, or on the carpet, those two things will contribute to overheating, possibly leading to the RRoD. If so, get them into an area where air can circulate and try it again.

Then again, just faulty manufacturing probably led to it. Like I said, I'm on my third 360 right now, but I've never had mine secluded in a tight space to lead to overheating. He should be covered by the new warranty though, if I remember correctly he should get a free replacement. Just have him call the MS help line and he'll be getting a new one.

I feel your pain though.

THIS.

That's the same that I've heard for what causes the RRoD. Tell him to get one of these 360 Intercoolers (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&product_id=802205) for $20. That's supposed to help with the overheating issue.

we were using one of those and it still happened. also at the time it was only plugged into the the wall, not the tv, would that have anything to do with it?

It shouldn't matter what it's plugged into. If the system is overheating, it's overheating. It being plugged into the TV or not isn't going to make any difference.

In all honesty, nobody really knows all of the causes of the RRoD. The CPU overheating and melting the solder is just one of the publicly "known" problems. I'm sure there are others, but MS hasn't bothered to share that info with the general public.

Just because it has a cooler on it doesn't mean it keeps it cooler. Some are designed poorly and actually help heat up the 360.

Have your friend call M$ customer support and get a new one. Better safe then sorry.

As for where you should get one to avoid this problem... well um... don't know what to say. It happens to more 360's then it doesn't. It's just the way they are made. Best bet is to just keep it out of confined spaces, let it rest every couple hours (as should you) and don't keep it around things that get hot like an audio reciever or something.

actually, if your 360 is not plugged into a tv or anything else, the 360 will read it as a hardware failure and not boot up. so yes if you dont have what ever youre using for video (composite cables, vga etc.) not plugged in the 360 wont work

EDIT: also just because its failing doesnt neccessarily mean its overheating. if there's 3 red lights its done. if its one i think its a hardware failiure but 2 is over heating or something like that.

The new 65nm Falcon 360's are like night and day from the older ones. My 3rd 360 crapped out on the day that CoD4 came out so I took my broken 360 in to EB and traded it in on a new one. When you buy a new one be sure to look for "Lot 374" or greater (ie 375 etc) and "team FDOU" on the upc sticker on the side of the cardboard box the 360 is sold in.

How long did you play the game? If you played it long time, it's gonna heat up.

Yah... playing a game for 120 hours straight will cause a 360 to overheat...

Definitely will, see below.

Wanna know why? You didnt get RROD.

RROD is 3 red rings. You got 4. When the system has no A/V connection, all 4 lights turn red to let you know this.

No worries

DO NOT USE AN INTERCOOLER.

I heard that the Intercooler's are actually bad for your xbox. My friend had one overheat and it melted to his 360. Therefore, his warranty was void since it was a third party product. Sucks.

Yeah, never buy a cooler that uses the same power as the 360. It's always best to get a seperate fan cooler that doesn't run off your 360 power (and these are usually cheaper too!). Or, if you're really cheap, just get a regular fan pointed at it to cool it off. Also make sure it's well ventilated in the first place...doesn't matter how many fans you have if the system can't vent its heat anywhere.
