A bit of a weird title I know...
However, I'm sure most of you are aware that the Northeastern U.S. got pummeled by a nasty ice storm a couple days ago. Some of you probably know cause you were living in it like I was. Recently got my power back, it was down for over 32 hours. Anybody else have a similar experience? Or a similar experience in a different storm in the past?
One thing it made me realize is how dependent I personally am on electricity. I went in to work 3 hours early one of the two days cause I was bored. I don't really read, I couldn't find my game boy (tragic), I don't have any board games around.

Pfffffff 32 hours? That it?
I was there in 1998 in Québec when we had probably one of the biggest ice storms ever. My family and myself were without electricity for at least 1 month.

The longest one I've seen is 3 days. I lived near Detroit at the time. I cant remember what year it was though.

Hayzeus. The time I thought the power came back on was incorrect (I was at work) and it was really 38 hours, but that's still nothing compared to a month.

probably about 4 hours. it's usually not that bad here.
but another town near me had its power out for like 10 or so hours. And this town was on a Major Highway (Highway 20, it's a pretty damn long highway)

When Hurricane Charley came through we lost power 40 hours. We were lucky though because our house happens to be on the same grid as the local hospital, so the power in our area was a priority. I know most of the rest of the city didn't get power back for another two to three weeks. Power wasn't declared fully restored to all customers until the following month.
It's horrible too for those of you who haven't been around after a hurricane hits. After the eye leaves the barometric pressure rises very quickly. The skies become completely clear, the wind stops, and the humidity rises. The weather of the aftermath is extremely oppressive and of course is exacerbated by the lack of power and utilities from the damage. It isn't like when a regular cold front comes through and cools off the environment for the next week.

Hurricane Rita hit here and some people were out for the better part of 5 weeks

We refer to that event around here as "The Blackout".
It was pretty insane though. When it happened I was at the office and they ended up sending everyone home because none of our systems were working.
What did everyone do?? Straight to the bar before the beer would get cold.
Pretty funny actually. It turned into one of the biggest street parties I've ever seen. Nobody had anything to do but go outside and socialise.
