View Full Version : What is your vocalist Overdrive 'phrase'?

brokentoothpic
11-25-2007, 01:30 PM
Ok, we all do something. Some people say 'YEAH!'

...I do a turkey gobble. :) I know, its corny.

So, what do ya'll do? Do you have some particular 'signature' sound/phrase you do to trigger Overdrive when doing vocalist?

Usually 'YEAH!' or a melodic 'hmmm' or something fun like spurting out 'blug gah de fik' on Timmy.

I jump around all the time. Thats 1/2 the fun of the game. I play real guitar too and it just feels better to do the windmill/karate kicks/headbang while playing plastic guitars than just sitting in a chair. I mean come on the game is supposed to simulate playing in a rock band, and you wouldnt want to go see a band just sit down and play their music.

Yeah and besides in Madden you push a button to tackle. In RB you really are singing. Big difference.

I switch up the phrases quite often, but they usually involve either something about my balls or threatening to kill the audience, depending on how much I've had to drink. Most songs are finished off with a GOODNIGHT CLEVELAND!

Kent
11-25-2007, 04:51 PM
I like to just yell "Cowbell!" Or, if I have the time for it, "I gotta have more cowbell," doing my best Walken impersonation.

A friend of mine also likes to either say any random word, or volcalize the synthesizer track from Tom Sawyer.

Well, now I know what I'm doing NEXT time! :D

The first time I went for vocal overdrive, my husband was picking on me about it, and so I stuck my tongue out and raspberried at him :p This prompted him to do a Taz impression, which made me dissolved into hysterical giggles... so, either the raspberry itself, or a Taz-like phrase ending in a raspberry, is the norm for now.
(Until I read that Leeroooooooooooooooooy Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenkins post.... that is too good to pass up.)

masterx1918
11-26-2007, 05:50 AM
I bark like a dog, growl like James Hetfield or just go "yeah!" or "whoo!" when I can't think of anything to say. My favorite phrase though was screaming "I HAVE AIDS" during a Big Rock ending.

thorn_9
11-26-2007, 05:55 AM

Me too man. I tend to yell something about putting mine the general "you" somewhere. I also start singing about that whenever I don't know the words.

I also like to sing in "Say It Ain't So":
"Oh yeah... All right... Feels good... deep Inside..."
The ladies seem to like that part.

Instead of tapping the mic with her finger, our singer likes to throw the mic at my face while I'm in the middle of a drum fill.

dlisapussy
11-26-2007, 06:33 AM
All depends on the song. I usually imitate the singer, usually by a "yeah" or a "woo". If it's Boston, I let out a Brad Delp high pitched "yeah". If it's the Who I let out a screaming loud Roger Daltrey "yeah". If it's The Rolling Stones I let out a Mick Jagger "yeah".

Catch my drift?

YouTube the song "Slaughter Your World". My band'll break into that in longer empty sections. XD

If the streak is long enough, I'll do some Randy Blythe type thing where I'll start out all evil growly and go all the way up to a scream. "hurooohhhhhhhhhhHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" Or just a simple JAYAH!! But I've noticed it won't pick up my voice right away when the yellow overdrive thing comes along. All righty then. Picture this if you will.

I usually scream, 'THERE'S A BOMB UNDER ALL OF THE SEATS!!' followed by the crowd cheering even harder. And the classic, 'I got a fever, and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!!!' during (DF)TR, starting off slow and pausing every few words to screaming the last bit.

Usually something simple like "Alright, alright" or "c'mon c'mon". When doing Maiden I work in a "Speak to me Hammersmith" or a "Scream for me Long Beach!" Other times I comment on the song. I like to mix it up.

Sometimes we shout out at our friends in the room when we have a group going.

DStone39
12-03-2007, 12:19 PM
Why not... :P

I usually either carry on the note or say Woo! or something like that... Big Rock Endings are usually annoucing the next song, a shout-out the the city, or asking the audience for a song to play (in Random Setlists)

Some songs are special though...

Sabotage: A low growl of "Sabotage" usually works...
Epic: Since my friend gets upset because I keep asking him "What is it?" (he forgets I'm singing a song), I usually say "IT'S EPIC!"
Dead on Arrival: Usually a stab at Harmonix, "Why is this song emo?"
Don't Fear the Reaper: At the Big Rock Ending, the classic... "This song needs more cowbell!"
Maps: I regret doing this one, and I've never done it since. For some odd reason I got too into the song and shouted "THEY LOVE ME!" in an Overdrive phrase... My friend was cracking up big time on that one...

I started out with the generic "woooo!" but I try to make it song-appropriate now... holding the previous note, shouting something appropriate, or, if there's background vocals going on, I'll sing those. Since I'm usually singing solo, there's not much use for humor. :/

That's a double edged sword. I was singing Wanted by Bon Jovi but instead of "I've seen a million face, and I've rocked them all." I sand "I've seen a million faces, and I've [expletive beginning with f]'ed them all." Pretty soon my drummer was laughing so hard that he failed out.

You have to give it a James Hetfield "...aaa" after every word. In the heat of the moment sometimes you can't help but let out one of those awkward, pubescent voice squeak, "Woooo!" noises though.

I yell out 'Dirty White Cotton Panties!' on the longer overdrive phrase activations.

Old joke from my boys that gets them to chuckle when i say it out of the blue.

Otherwise i just yell 'Yeah!'.

Funny that this thread is up as now I tend to say:

BOINK!

Whatever is quick and sure to register as in some places there is not much time to activate...

Depends on the timing of it all. If I want everyone on the band to rock out I'll yell "everyone rock out". If not, it's usually a YEAH, or Trogdor!!! or something along those lines.

I do the Ollie Williams Weather Report from Family Guy over the course of all star power phrases.

'BRING ME SOME SOUP'
'What Kind?'
'CHUNKEH'

Well, somehow, my cousin and sister convinced me to name our band "FRANK*!"
So my sister usually starts the overdrive by shouting "FRANK STAR!!!!"
Oh well, as long as we have fun, am I right?

I always go, "Woo!" like Bender from Futurama. My roommate has taken to yelling, "Weak Sauce!"

I'll usually stretch out the last word before the overdrive or just go "yeaaaah" or "ooooooh"

This thread has me just about to pee my pants from trying not to laugh. I work in an office which I share with my supervisor (since I'm just a lowly co-op). I've almost burst into laughter like a dozen times.

Anywho, I yell "O'Doyle Rules!!!"

If there's enough room, I always try to squeeze in "Hello Cleveland!" if not, I just extend the end of the last word into the overdrive phrase to activate it.

That's what my ten year old son uses. Not bad actually.

Bonus points go to anyone who yells "Leeroooooooooy Jenkins!"
LOL I'll have to try that! :D
Usually I find that a Ric Flair "WOO!" does fine and lets me sneak it in even during very short opportunities.

As for the sound I make for percussion when doing vocals and playing an instrument? Well, my primary one would be rated M for Mature, but I use the word "Bass" when I'm in mixed company or around the young'uns.

I jam the mic as close to my mouth as possible and scream "I can't hear you BK Broiler!"
Stupid Dane Cook reference but it cracks me up.

Try singing Don't Fear The Reaper using a Christopher Walken accent the whole time. You'll have people rolling.

All...our time...is gone....herebutnow....they're...gone *bounce shoulders*

You gotta record that and post it. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Normally i just do a nice, quick "yeah."

But im really bored i will start talkin to "the crowd," introduce the band members, or just say stuff to make my mates mess up and laugh.

Edthefreak

Depends on the song. Could be anything from a growl to a story. On some songs I tend to talk to the audience. Wanted Dead or Alive: "This is my story, these are my problems, etc."
As for Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld, I go into "Tim-my!" fits.

ive got two, one i use with a certain group of people that im sure people would not want to read posted on here, and the other is "do da do do do" or some for or variation of that, or just holding notes longer then needed so i dont have to do anything extra

I usually just either extend the words, or say something similar to what was just said or what is coming up. Sometimes I'll say something like thank you Seattle, or *insert band member's name here* sucks. I generally stay away from the Wooo, just because it's annoying.
