View Full Version : PS3ers! I need your help with backing up my HD please
Hey Everyone,
My PS3 croaked and I have to send it in for repairs. Just trying to back up my hard drive data in case they send me a refurb. Here's the problem:
The PS3 does not recognize the external hardrive that I connected. It's an HP Pocket Media Drive, model PD3200s.
I thought I just had to re-format the drive but that hasn't worked either. I can copy individual game saves to a flash drive but somehow can't get the PS3 to recognize the external HP drive when I connect it via USB.
Any ideas?? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Ok so I think I've determined that my PS3 does not recognize my external HD no matter what.
It DOES recognize my tiny little flash drive and I've been able to manually copy my game saves except for RB and RB2. They're the only ones I can't copy.
Anyone figure out a way to do this or am I S.O.L?

Is it possible to the the Backup utility onto your flash drive in multiple chunks?
Depending on what model of PS3 you have and how full the hard drive is, you could always pick up a cheap SD card or flash drive and do the Backup utility that way.
I think the RB save files are locked to the hard drive unless you do the whole shebang.

Thanks for responding dude, I was feeling pretty lonely over here ;)
What you're suggesting might be an option....depending on how much data I need to back up. I should go check that now....
EDIT:
Tell me if this makes sense. I can fit the Saved data onto a 1gig flash drive. If I delete everything off of my hard drive including the RB and RB2 game data I should be able to then use the backup utility to get the RB/RB2 game saves on the flash drive. Make sense?
The downside is I'll have to re-download all my DLC. But that's not a huge deal. Would I have to pay that 5 bucks again to export RB1 tracks to my HD though?

ou wont have to pay 5 bucks for the export key. you just DL it again like any song.
but.... Your screwed as far as rock band data goes. for some reason harmonix has felt that is fun to not be able to back it up. even the entire system backup wont recover it. it will work if your just upgrading the hd to put that same data back in the same console, but when you sned your console to sony and they send you another back, that rb data wont work. but every other save file will. including GHWT

I think that makes sense, if you were to say:
-delete all your DLC (which you'll be able to redownload, so long as you haven't redownloaded it the other 4 or 5 times you're allowed) and the installed files for games
-move your music/movies/save files that ARE able to be copied onto that thumb drive and put them on your PC
-then, once the remaining stuff on your hard drive is the bare minimum (like just the basic profile files and the non-movable stuff like Rock Band system files), then you could do a System Backup in the System Settings and save the rest of that stuff onto one file (that you'd be able to use to restore once your new system arrives)
Technically, that should work. I'm really not sure about how anal the Rock Band system files are, but they should be able to be backed up as part of the System Backup funcion.
Ah man it sucks that you can't use a backed up save game. Guess my band and all my progress are down the tubes.
HMX I love you guys but copy protecting the save game file is lame. It's the only game save I couldn't back up.
