View Full Version : So is using a REAL bass pedal cheating?

I rigged my bass pedal using a method found on the scorehero forums involving a momentary push button, a block of wood, and some duct tape.
I now have a metal bass pedal that plays pretty damn well on the game. So with all of the garbage of "Hyperspeed is cheating" (hahaha), is it cheating to use a metal bass pedal?
I'm still going to use it regardless because anyone can make this setup, but i'm just curious what people think.

You still need to have the appropriate level of skill to hit the pedal in rhythm... so I don't see how it could be cheating.

I've always thought that modding your equipment was was awesome. I put the innards of my X-plorer inside of my old SG, no one I played with seemed to mind, or consider it cheating.
Got any pics of your new setup?

Where did you find this on the scorehero forums. I searched, but couldn't find it.

Great idea! I don't think it's cheating at all. Do you have that link for that Scorehero thread?

So... if this makes the game easier for me, how come hyperspeed is seen as bad if it supposedly makes things "easier"?
I'll have some pictures up on my photobucket and some video later tonight too.

More efficient equipment is different than altering the gameplay through a cheat code.
I think it's a great idea, if i had the skill to build it I would totally do it.

I would call more efficient equipment the exact same as altering the gameplay, honestly.

My GH3 Les Paul is certainly more efficient then the bundled guitar. I guess I'm cheating too! :D

I would think setting up something for the hammer to hit would be better. Not having a hammer on a bass petal pretty much ruins any since of real feel you would get from it.

i think it gives an unfair advantage. but no one is stopping anyone from making it. itd be like if steroids in baseball were legal. some people took it but most didnt want to deal with the headaches of doing it. those that did however would have an advantage.

It DOES make me better though, because it's easier for me to play on this than on the Rock Band official pedal.

Awesome, I'd love to do this. I have a Tama double bass pedal I can take from my drumset. Of course I'd probably detach the left pedal and just use the single. I would rather find a way to make a kick pad work though. I'm sure there will be plenty of cool findings in the next month regarding a custom bass pedal.
Thanks for the video.

That's a pretty cool mod, although still for me the big missing aspect of the RB pedal is the realistic rebound from the head. You get the spring simulation with the pedal, but all of the downward energy is absorbed since there's no direct rebound from the sensor.
Since we know that a momentary button and a standard stereo cable works I think the ultimate bass mod would be to make a DIY mesh pad with a foam backing and a single piezo sensor (or hell even a momentary button protected by foam). That way you could use real beaters and get rebound from the head to be able to slide out doubles easily.

im not a handy man but i sure would like a better quality pedal. i hope 3rd party stuff comes quick!! my pedal snapped today and i have it duct taped with a metal-speaker-cover-thing over where it broke.
im gonna have to at least check out how it was made.. moar drumkit mods!

I think pedals might be the first things we see. Specially considering how simple they are to construct. But the cost of building one yourself will ultimately be cheaper considering how mass production and that sexy box art they like to put on everything makes stuff so much more expensive.

I completely agree with what your saying here.
I have a DTXpress electric kit with a pintech edrum mounted on a stand that the bass pedal hits (and triggers the edrum). I think i'm going to see about using this setup and then inserting the button trigger under the pedal. Should then have the rebound plus triggering all in one hit. If this works...Epic should be a breeze.
