I can do the vocals on hard fairly consistently, but I would like to move to expert, which is so *$@%ing hard. Does anybody have some tips to do the vocals, other than the obvious of following the pitch tubes and knowing the lyrics to an extent?

Sing from your diaphram. If you can feel your voice in your nose, you are doing it right.

I found I needed to start the first word of a phrase a little early to get the pitch meter in place right as the phrase starts. I also found that alot of the words at the end of phrases are held longer than feels natural, especially in songs like Blitzkrieg Bop, so I concentrate on holding that note all the way through the end of the phrase. Other than that, obviously, you have to hit the right pitch and/or be able to control your voice to get on pitch quickly based on feedback from the pitch meter.

These are good tips. Clear your throat and don't use *too* much vibrato.

sing like the singer in the band, if you sing like you are singing the song, you will probably do worse than if you sing like the singer is singing it.

If it makes sense...

Get someone to post lead sheets, those little lines for pitch are useless... lol.
Don't tighten up your throat, you need to be relaxed for your pitch to be accurate. Too much tension and you'll hurt yourself.

Other than that..... yeah, find lead sheets or sheet music :p
(And when you find them, SHARE! *giggle*)

I'd be happy if I could just pass songs on easy!

When lost, don't sing the words and just hum.

if the pitch is too high, remember you can move any phrase down by 1 octave, although it sounds terrible in person haha. I'm female so I do the opposite, and trust me you don't want to be the same room with me, but hey it works!

Agreed... the (frequency?) response/signal on the mic lags a little bit behind when you start singing a phrase or note after silence..... or at least that has been my experience.

Giving a more 'staccato' (for lack of the correct term) attack to the start of a lyric or phrase (or starting it early) seems to help noticeably.

Ain't THAT the truth... LOL. Those stratospheric notes sound so much better in Mozart than metal.... (broken any glass yet? ;) )

Yeah, that's the truth.

I've found that there's two things helping me tear up the vocal stuff:
1.) Learn the lyrics, but --not while playing-- You should get mp3's of the songs and listen to them to pick up how the singer sets up the different notes in each phrase. There's some kind of science to it, like how in "In Bloom" there's a lot of sliding around to get in position for the next note, or at least to me there is.

2.) Don't look directly at the screen. I can't hit the notes for anything if I keep staring at the screen, especially when I get together in a 4-player co-op or BWT. In other words, actually perform the song, don't just stand there and sing it. Adrenaline, especially when doing local BWT, really helps get through some songs. (*cough* "Green Grass and High Tides" *cough cough*)
