Some of you don't know; some of you do. It's in one of the loading screen tips as well as the manual if you read it. The singer's controller can, during the game, change some sound levels.

Oftentimes during a Rock Band frenzy more than 4 people are into the game and an excellent job for the 5th person has turned out to be sound tech. They adjust the vocal track, mic track, and mic sensitivity for the perfect blend in of our singer's vocals.

Now what is slightly unfortunate is that the only 3 adjustments are those three volumes related to vocals. There was a big opportunity to allow that controller to adjust also the relative levels of guitar, bass, and drums to bring a custom sound experience to the band. Heck while you were at it (and since there's plenty of buttons) there could easily be light cues done manually by the controller as well which would override the default lights with 4-5 preset effects.

I understand that HMX expected the singer to have those minor controls simply to enhance their own performance but I just wanted to throw out the idea that popped into my head.

Interesting, I actually really like that idea.

How much can you reall do with that? I never really messed with it, and just assumed it never made that big of a difference.

A neat idea, but I don't know anyone I'd trust not to misuse it. Guitar shuts off mid-solo, lights are calculated to induce seizures...

This is actually a pretty creative idea. I can't imagine it getting a whole lot of use across the general population of players (same issue with Solo Bass tour) but it would certainly add to performance uniqueness.

At least with the singer's vocals is makes a huge difference. Sometimes the singer doesn't know the song and needs the original vocals bumped up. Other times the singer's beautiful singing can't be heard at all.

Of course someone could abuse the controls but that's part of the fun right :P Since there's no BWT online they're right in the same room with you and ripe for a back-o-the-head smack.
