Hey... I just got a real drum set for Christmas, and I'm really excited. I think I'm going to take drum lessons from a friend starting in a couple of weeks, but right now, I'm playing along to songs in RB and having a blast. (I have never touched a real set before yesterday, but I have a few years of concert percussion experience)
I just had a quick question... Whenever I see real drummers, and the RB drummers, they kinda "slice" their stick when playing on the ride cymbal. Why is this, and is it necessary?

There's no real reason for it, other than the fact that it's less wear&tear on the cymbal. You'll often see us doing that on the crash too. You can get the same sound out of the cymbal by swiping it sideways like that, but it puts a lot less strain on the metal.

Not sure what you mean by slicing... but pretty awesome on getting a real set!

As in, instead of striking the cymbal vertically, it's done more left to right/right to left... a more horizontal motion.
By the way, here's a pic :)

Yeah, haha. I took that pic right after I set it up. I've moved some stuff to make it a better set up

Indeed a nice kit, but that third tom there seems to be facing the wrong way....for me that is anyway.

I always thought of it as a "style" type thing, though, i have done it before, and there is no change in sound, just like davidshek said it's most likely to decrease the "wear and tear" on the cymbal.
:D

Umm, excuse me sir, your bass drum is backwards... or the head is at least... or... jeeze... I don't know :D
