Can't invite friend/PS3

I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem. I own the ps3 version and I'm trying to invite a friend to play. The invitation comes through fine, and asks which local players want to join. but when you try to join, it says can't connect to session. I haven't seen anything where ports are needed or something. If anyone has a solution for this, it would be great, thanks.

I have seen this as well, but only when trying to invite my brother who lives in the States (I live in England). I have been able to play online with a friend in the same country (100 miles from me) but if my brother and I try to play (or when he's tried to play with my friend), no matter which side sends the invite, the other side will get 'cannot connect to session' message. We have PS3's.

Is the system checking the internet lag between the consoles and deciding that the game won't work? A more helpful error message would be useful.
