View Full Version : I'm getting pretty sick and tired of people calling me a hipster.

when ever people ask me what music I listen to I'll say like Sonic Youth Velvet Underground and Pink Floyd and David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails and Neil Young. then they automatically assume I'm a hipster. it's not like I act like one. I wouldn't listen to the beatles and Neil Young and David Bowie if I was a hipster, not to mention I like a lot of other bands. So is anyone else here marked as a hipster just because of a few bands u like that hipsters tend to listen to.

it's silly, particularly considering it only happens on the internet (much like claims of me being pretentious/elitist), but i don't really care.

i know that i'm a solid-gold homeboy, jealous haters be damned! :)

You probably are a hipster. First rule of being a hipster is to deny being a hipster.

would that make everyone a hipster aside from non-hipsters who aspire to hipsterdom? :)

What exactly is a hipster?

i believe the definition varies from turd who worships at the altar of pitchfork, turd who parties with minor celebs, turd who follows lower-key musical trends, and all around turd who denies being a turd.

Everybody, hipster or not, should have a copy of this:
Hipster Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/Hipster-Handbook-Robert-Lanham/dp/1400032016/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230418720&sr=8-1)

But the wikipedia entry pretty much sums it up nicely:

In the late 1990s and during the 2000s, the 1940s slang term hipster was used to describe young, urban middle class and upper class adults with interests in non-mainstream fashion and culture, particularly alternative music, independent rock, independent film, magazines like Vice and Clash and websites like Pitchfork Media, and organic, vegan, or locally-grown food. In some contexts, hipsters are also referred to as scenesters.

It is difficult to give a precise definition of a hipster, because hipster culture is a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior[s]." One commentator argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—Beat, hippie, punk, even grunge," and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity" and "*** style", and "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity" and a sense of irony.

Basing my previsions on both your speeches and age, I prophecize your complete knowledge of every fact linked to rock music, later in your life.

That explains jealous haters.

Over here, we call them Hippies and it's kind of a compliment. It means pacifist, relaxed and melomaniac. I learned, about a year ago, that in united states and english canadian culture, hippie means drug addict.

Hippie here is not a "drug addict" per se, but one who emulates the fashions of the 60s/70s anti-war crowd, or think Grateful Dead. Pot and Acid are the chemicals of choice but not mandatory.

Ok, I'm still trying to understand hipsters. Would Trainspotting be a hipster movie/book?

I am a ****ing hipster. **** you if you don't like it. You're just jealous because your milkshake doesn't bring all the boys to the yard like mine does.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some PBR to drink out of a martini glass.

I'm with Soror_YZBL on this one, **** the haters. The only thing wrong with being a hipster is having to wear the skinny pants. The fatter I get the harder it is to look the part. :p

Well then you fail, because everyone knows hipsters consume mass amounts of substances that help with weight loss. :)

Whether you're a hipster does not solely depend on musical taste.

I picture you in nerdwear with a hillbilly accent.

you're almost spot-on with the accent, but my clothing is pretty much what you'd expect if crust punks wore clothes that aren't either black or camo.

i also have a stockpile of shirts that were failed screeprinting/sewing/weaving attempts. i get looks, but i don't think it's in a good way. :o

Ahhhh, now I see. I'm the complete opposite, I've traded in my old goth attire for an endless sea of sensible skirts, buttoned blouses, sweaters and pressed slacks. Aside from the fact that I have a lot of visible tattoos, one would never suspect that I used to be a freak. Ack! I sold out! I'm just like Metallica!

It's like the court's definition of porn...you know one when you see one.
Usually it's some d-bag that wears tight pants and ironic t-shirts and spends hours making sure their angled haircut looks just right before going out and loitering in front of clubs/vinyl stores/anywhere else (some places are for the irony) because they got no place to be, man (credit: King of the Hill). While loitering, they discuss how all popular music sucks and how their favorite, carefully chosen underground art-rock band that only three other people have heard of is far superior to anything YOU are listening to.

I love classic rock too, but Linkin Park does not represent all modern bands. There are some great new bands out there, and there's no reason to dismiss all new bands and miss out on some great music just because of the crap they play on the radio.
