Do you have to have a microphone?

I been playing GHIII on the PS3, I have been reading the forum and realize there is an issue with the GH controllers not working on rockband. Different companies, fair enough.

I rented rock band software to give a try, the game doesn't work with just the standard PS3 controller...keeps saying I need a microphone (not detected).

Can you play the game without a microphone, and if not...what is the point of selling just the software?

Rock Band has a tip in-game that states that Rock Band will work with almost any USB Microphone, and I know that the Xbox 360 headset can be used as a microphone (obviously this doesn't help you on your PS3 version of the game). If you have a USB microphone, and just wanted to sing, you could buy just the game for $60 instead of the whole $170 kit.

Also, at least on the 360 version, the GHII and GHIII guitars work with rockband, which means that just buying the game could net you vocals and guitar/bass. The only thing you would be missing at that point would be drums, and the neat little additions that the Rockband guitars have over the GHIII guitars. The PS3 version, I believe, is having issues accepting the GHIII guitars at this point and therefore the only thing that you can do with just the game would be vocals (if you had a USB microphone) as the instruments are not being sold separately yet.
