I'm sort of in the really gray area between being interested in drumming but lacking the musical ear/training to figure much out on my own. The IONs and the RB2 Drum Trainer have provided the perfect environment to mess around in and hopefully we can get some invaluable advice from the many knowledgeable and helpful members of this forum on getting a more realistic drumming experience.

I originally asked for help with "Shut Up and Let Me Go" by The Ting Tings in another thread based on the following videos but moved it here by request. It's a pretty popular song so I'm going to pass on the wisdom that iamtheddrman kindly provided:

As far as I can tell, the pattern is 16th HH, bass on beats 1 and 3, and snare on beat 3. So in terms of sticking, it would be as follows.
Legend: R = right hand on hi hat
L = left hand on hi hat
S = right hand on snare
s = left hand on snare
C = right hand on crash
RLRLSLRLRLRLSLRL *continues for a while*

Fills would be as follows.
RLRLSLRLRLRLSLSsC

Thanks again!

Feel free to post similar requests in this thread, thanks.

He was pretty close, but not 100% correct. See below:

The pattern is indeed 16th notes on the hi-hat, but the kick is on every beat (1, 2, 3, and 4), and snare is on 2 and 4.

This part is correct. It's actually the exact same beat as Run to the Hills, just significantly slower. The Beat Trainer in RB2 calls this the "Disco Beat". It's used in a LOT of disco songs, and even in "Whip It" by Devo too ;)

Wow, who wouldathunk it'd be the same as "Run to the Hills"? Well, I'm glad to know why I was gouging my eyes out trying to figure out if it was 2 or 3 hi-hat right hands between snares - it was both! Thanks for the Disco Beat tip... I'll go check it out, although isn't it heavy on reds? So I just switch the reds and yellows?

Thanks!

It's heavy on reds because on beats that have 16th notes on the hi-hat, HMX switches the hi-hat to red and the snare to yellow. That way, you can still play it naturally like you would on a real kit, playing the snare hits with your right hand.

If they had left it the "normal" way with hi-hat on yellow, you'd have to be reaching over your left hand with your right hand to hit the red snares. Totally awkward.

I have a question regarding the disco beat 4 in the beat trainer.

What is the correct sticking for this beat?
I realized pretty quickly that I need to double hit with my left hand with that second bass.

I can't pass this song at 100bpm. I can with one hand at 80 though... which I feel is cheating.
