Regular controller for drums

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the game recognises the drums as being the drums because the analog is stuck at a certain position. This would technically mean that you could use the regular Xbox controller for playing the drums correct?

I ask because my coworker has made a wireless Strat by using some of the gus from a Les Paul and he wants to make wireless drums as well. He could do this pretty easy if he could use the guts from a regular controller...
