can play online but not with friends!

I am able to substitute in bands for strangers online on the PSN but when a friend and I (both PS3 users) try to link up to play the online tour, I send him the invite to join my online game, he gets the invite, but it simply says "can't connect to session." He has been able to play online with strangers too so the problem is not with either of our internet connections to the PSN.

Regardless of which one of us "hosts" the online game, we are both able to see random people join when you hit triangle to search online for other players, but upon accepting an invite it will only lead to saying "can't connect to session" and gives an option to "Retry Join" which ultimately only says "can't connect to session."

Does anyone know what is wrong? Thanks in advance,

I've seen some other threads saying the PS3 online play was down. Tha may be the problem, unless of course this has been happening for a while.

The issue there was that the server was down and NO ONE could play online, period. The issue I was having earlier in the day yesterday before the server went down was regardless of whether I or my friend "hosted" a game, neither of us could join the other. When either of us tried we knew our online connection to the PSN was working because random people were able to join our games! But when one of us extended an invitation to the other to join our game, one checks invites, attempts to join the game, and it says "can't connect to session." This makes absolutely no sense to me.

I've seen that once or twice, but not very often. Hmmm, have you ben able to connect to other friends?

Haven't gotten a chance to try with my only other friend who has rock band 2 for PS3 yet. I wonder if there's something in one or both of our network settings for PS3 that's blocking friends from joining or could it even be a router issue? What I simply don't understand is that both of us can host games that random people can join when you hit triangle to search for other players but friends who accept an invitation can't connect to each other's session.

That is strange behaviour. I'd be interested inknowing what the resolution to this is,if any.
