Okay, so I am probably just dreaming here... but I'm in a band, and a couple of our fans were asking if we could import our tracks into RockBand, and how k3wL would that be!?
Anyhow, I'm pretty good with the technical stuff and I own the copyrights to the original tracks, as well as everything to solo out each part, as well as the midi. Is this just a total pipe dream, or what?
Thanks,
-Dave of The Strand

First off, as the owner of the master tracks you should contact Harmonix and let them know youd be willing to donate your tracks. Who knows, stranger things have happened I'm sure. Second, track authoring tools may be in our future, so keep your fingers crossed.

Cool, thanks! I will do that.

Anyone have any new developments with the idea of importing music into RockBand?

i wouldn't hold my breath.
there are not enough people in your situation (with masters) to make it worth while. and without the masters, it can't be done.

However, contacting Harmonix saying that you own the masters with copyrighting and free licensing might be a good way to become DLC.
Hell, even if HMX charges, I'd be willing to pay for indie downloads. The bonus tracks really add to the game's value.

Yeah, I remember seeing a video interview and they said they wanted to have recording tools so you could put your own music (from your r/l band) into the game, and then write the note charts for them.
They didn't give a date or anything, but the way they said it made me feel like this was a long-term goal. They might have it for RB3 or something... in, like, 5 or 6 years.

Your band sucks just because you used the word "k3wL"
If they allow you to import your own songs then what's the point of DLC because people will start putting anything and everything into Rock Band.

Im kinda currious about this one myself,Everything me and my band record I archive and keep the masters,Im always playing with the mixing in our stuff and whatnot.Having our own songs as DLC would be so awesome I cant even begin to explain..Sean should chime in on this one...

My impression from reading articles is that DLC will only be available from Xbox live (or the PS equivalent), so you won't be able to create/distribute commmercial music.

They didn't say you could just put in any kind of mp3 or wav file. I think you'd need a master track and then you can separate it and write the note charts for it. So, basically, either you would have to get the license and the master tracks if it isn't your song, or it would have to be your song.
