My son had his 7th birthday party this last weekend and he wanted me to make him a volcano cake. . .so i did :)
3045
it was a hit. we had people that worked there taking pictures and even kids from other birthday parties coming to watch it. The volcano was 4 cakes piled on top of each other. The little hill is 2 tier and has dinos guarding their eggs. there is a beach with some dinos lounging by the water (a couple in the water). Some palm trees, even a flying pteranadon (on a wire).
this is the volcano erupting:

and this is after the smoke stopped and the lava started flowing:

That's awesome. What did you use for the reaction, and the filling?
My first thought was Vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring. But then I realized you would have to eat it. heh.
I would like to try and make something like that for my nephew. Think it would be fun.

inside the volcano i put a tall plastic drinking cup (cleaned of course) i put dry ice inside (wasn't visible)
I made the "Lava" by taking marshmallow fluff and addin a TON of red food coloring mixed with brown food coloring (too little red and it looks orangish, too little brown and it looks pink)
i diluted the marshmallow fluff with a TINY bit of hot water and a small amount of karo clear corn syrup. so it was slightly runny (but not too much). At the party, i put the dry ice inside the cup, poured in the lava, and after we sang happy birthday, i added some HOT water. it bubbles violently (the smoke). Because the marshmallow mix has cooled somewhat, it deters the smoke from escaping causing some of it to poof out in jets (we had 1 go approx a foot high) but most of it still just kinda comes out in mass. once the violent bubbling stops, it starts a slower release of gas . . .since the marshmallow lava is still in there, and since it isn't as violent, the bubbles maintain their shape. they build up, rise and slowly start to pour out of the volcano.
i saw a guy once use an electric pump and a series of rubber tubing to generate puffs of smoke and lava flow. . .but my way required less electricity :)
EDIT: BTW if you try this. . you cannot touch dry ice. it will burn you. use tongs.
