1963 - The Whiskey A-Go-Go opens it's doors in Los Angeles. It becomes the focal point for live music in LA.

1964 - Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash becomes the first country album to top the US chart pop album chart.

1967 - The Beatles' Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever hits #2 in the UK.

1981 - Fashion restores David Bowie to the US singles chart as it enters the chart at #70

1985 - The first edition of the Rock In Rio Festival was held from January 11-20. Queen, George Benson, Rod Stewart, AC/DC and Yes were the headliners, each occupying top spot for two nights. Also on the bill were Al Jarreau, The B-52's, The Go Go's, Iron Maiden, James Taylor, Nina Hagen, Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, The Scorpions and Whitesnake.

Some notables from the Festival

Both Queen shows were filmed (on January 11 and January 18) and broadcast throughout Brazil by Globo. Each show was watched by nearly 200 million people in over 60 countries. It was later broadcast in the United States on MTV as "Queen: Rock in Rio."

Nina Hagen was paid nothing for her two performances, since she had approached Roberto Medina, the festival's mentor herself, requesting a place in its bill. Queen were the highest-paid act, commanding US$ 600,000 for its two headlining performances, on January 11 and 18.

Tommy Aldridge would quit Ozzy's band following the performance. He would be replaced by Randy Castillo.

1986 - Tonight She Comes by The Cars is #6 in the US.

1990 - Paul McCartney is on his first World Tour in 13 years. On this day he plays Wembley Stadium and for the first time during his solo career he devotes a considerbale section of his show to performing Beatles songs.

1990 - Jim Dandy from the band Black Oak Arkansas joins Motley Crue on stage for their rendition of Jailhouse Rock in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
