View Full Version : F****** NHL 09, Why can't I find a good game?

Seriously.

The last actually good game I bought (got for Christmas) was Gears 2.

Paintball 2009 was a rip-off.

"Oh wee! Let's overhype a ****ty game! It's the next Cod4!"

Dead Space is a good game for the first 1/2 hours. After that (when you actually realize when you get off the train it's pretty much the same damn level over and over again), it gets useless and boring. The only reason this game is even nominated for a GoTY is because it will literally make you sh*t bricks. I do not reccomend buying this game and/or playing it at night.

RB:AC/DC puts the hardest song first, leaving the achievements pretty much impossible to get.

NHL 09 (just bought today) is flat-out awful. Even if you like hockey, don't buy this game. The controls are ******ed (NHL 94 controls don't even work properly). All you can do is either slap-shot or wrist shot. No aiming with NHL 94. So if you hate the new NHL controls, you get beat 4-0 by the CPU every time, on Rookie. Leaving the game pretty much worthless. And with this "no return policy" from Target/Best Buy/Walmart, If I actually wanna buy a game for a change. It's a 50/50 shot on whether I will like it or not. The only reason I even bought this game is because Blockbuster didn't even fcking carry it, and I liked NHL 07 and the big-bad men at EA told me "it's so much better!". Well guess what? IT's NOT. Stop overhyping a game to be "the best hockey game ever", when your two biggest game modes are a giant piece of sh*t. Nor do I have any jock friends that will even play this game with me in the NHLHL, and Be a Pro mode is more like playing as a 4th string WR in Madden 09 in Superstar mode. By this I mean, your teamates are so damn greedy with the puck, it takes FOREVER to make it to the NHL. It's bad enough I have to play on the Hershey Bears for 10 or so games, but seriously. The past 4 games my player has 1 goal and 3 Assists. And our team has destroyed them every game. WTF?

Do I really have to wait for Cod4:MW2 to come out? Madden 10 looks really promising, but thats in a couple months guys.

Yeah I hated the controls at first too, there is going to be an adjustment period. But once you get em, the game is actually a lot of fun.

Well AC/DC is more of a track pack than anything. And, in my opinion, Dirty Deeds is much harder than Thunderstruck. It's more fun to play them in RB2 anyway.

If you're looking for a good game, try EndWar. It's a blast, and you basically play the whole game by telling it what to do, which is awesome. Also, if you're a Clancy fan, cameos from Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, HAWX, and Splinter Cell are pretty cool.

EndWar doesn't have alot of replay value though, and I'm pretty much broke on cash from NHL 09. Which is disapointment to even call a game.

Paintball the next COD 4? Were you only read the offical game page or something?

4-0 on rookie? and I'm pretty sure you can press a button to make them pass you the puck.

Yeah. It was made out to be the next best shooter out there. All the people that played RB62 moved over to Paintball 2009, only to find that it flat out sucks.

And whats the button? I don't think it'll help anyway. These controls are ****ing awful.

It really does, if you have XBL. Even the WW3 campaign never goes the same twice, and you can always choose to play as a different faction. Used copies of the game are down to $35 already. Units also have a leveling system where they gain new abilities, which lets you switch up your strategies as your troops get better.

I had a great match the other day where I just had a bunch of riflemen on the USS Reagan sniping all of the enemy infantry units, and they couldn't figure out where my guys were, and were unable to capture any uplinks. Between the snipers, the airstrikes, and the Rods From God, they ran out of units. :D
I'm not sure why they didn't just nuke my uplinks though. That would've disabled the airstrikes and probably taken out some of the buildings my snipers were hiding in.

That's the ****** problem though.

I don't have that much money to be spending on games. I can probly sell Paintball 2009, GH3 (sealed), Alaskan King Crab Fishing, and NHL 09 for maybe 50 bucks if I'm lucky. But I really don't know what game I'd want to buy, and I don't wanna take a risk on EndWar. There's just no new good games out right now, and it pisses me off. It really should be illegal to rip people off like this.

Have you tried the demo? That might give you a good idea if you'd like the game. Just make sure to switch the voice commands from light to normal once you get the basics down.

Edit: Wait, why on Earth did you buy King Crab Fishing?

I liked the demo for NHL 09, and look what happened there.

I actually got King Crab Fishing from one of my dad's friends, who is currently being charged for fraud. So I get to keep it, but it's a terrible game anyway. Only played it for like 5 minutes.

Exactly my point. All the flaws (and I mean ALOT of flaws) came out in the final version of the game. When a demo is better than an entire game, you know you have an issue.

I mean, damn. Is it just me? It feels terrible to be ripped off like this, every ****ing time. NHL 09 was the only game I wanted to buy.

Ehh..

I'm already planning on trying to return the game later. If Target gives me a "we'll exchange it for the same game" kind of deal I'll just flip out. Their bound to give me my money back sooner or later. If I have to be dragged out of that store, so be it.

Well unfortunately that's exactly what will happen. They don't take back games that have been played that you just don't like anymore. The only store that does that is GameStop and even then only with used titles. Too many people used to abuse the 90 day return policies to get game after game only having to pay for the first. The best you can do is sell it on ebay or Amazon and try to get some of your money back. Just make sure you sell it for less than the listed price, or you'll never get rid of it.

Most EA sports games suck.

I have the same problem though, last great game I bought was...Rock Band 2. And I have bought a few since then. (*cough GH:WT, Far Cry 2, and GH:Aerosmith) Hopefully Halo Wars will be awesome.

couple things:
1. you think the controls were different in the demo? seems the same to me, but whatever.

2. controls definitely took some getting used to, and i am still not great yet. my biggest complaint is having the check and shot both using the r-analog which means many of my rebounds attempts end in a cross check. nhl 2k8 had a modifer to dedicate one button to one task, which i would really like.

3. i like the fact that in be a pro that you start in the minors. my teammates were greedy too. but thank god there is a call for puck button. let it be your friend. my sniper played about 16 games before i was called up to the pens, and i made it up to 1st line left wing by my 30 somethingth game of the year. playing 6 min periods, you can easily run off 4 or 5 games in a session....

4. let me know if you play on live...

as far as other games and being disappointed, don't worry, RESIDENT EVIL 5, very soon!!!!!!!!

i havent heard a bad thing about NHL09 until now. ive heard nothing but praise on how awesome it is. and these arent from internet reviews of critics, its from my friends who have boughten it and play it extensively.

ive played it with friends (i used classic controls) and it was amazing. much smoother than 08.

Gears 2 Came out in November though.

The last good game I got was Gears 2. I played 4 games down that stretch (lucky I rented a couple of em)

Dead Space (rented, see OP)
Paintball 2009 (bought, piece of sh*t see OP)
Quantam of Solace (alright, online sucks tho)
NHL 09 (bought, See OP)

All of which either suck, get boring half-way through the game, or virtually have no multiplayer at all.

The problem is the 94 controls though. Classic is alright, but the 94 controls were supposed to be one of the "biggest additions to the game". You can't dueke, and it makes it almost near impossible to score a goal.

First of all, you can do more than just slap-shot and wrist-shot, and anyways, previous games only had those 2. The new NHL controls make it like you had real control of your own stick and you can do an infinite number of different dekes and shots.

your teamates are so damn greedy with the puck, it takes FOREVER to make it to the NHL. It's bad enough I have to play on the Hershey Bears for 10 or so games, but seriously. The past 4 games my player has 1 goal and 3 Assists. And our team has destroyed them every game. WTF?

If your teamates don't give you the puck, that means you're not placed at a good spot to take a good shot or whatever. 1 goal and 3 assists in 4 games on Rookie is nub, that means you don't even have mastered the game enough to play on this difficulty level (Rookie).

So don't hate a game you can't even play, nub. :)

Do me a favor, go track down a copy of NHL94, and then tell me how you deke and aim.....wait....you can't.....

The controls allow you to do exactly what you could in NHL94 with one button commands. If you go to simpler style controls like that, then you're going to have to realize that you will lose a number of the higher quality actions.

As for the regular controls, I got used to them when they introduced them in NHL07 and I couldn't possibly go back now. They work great.

If your team isn't passing it's because you're not telling them to. NHL players don't just skate around in silence, they yell for passes, and there's a button to do that. It's the same button you press to pass.

bood-boy

so youre hating on a game cause the 15 year old NHL94 control scheme isnt good enough for u to beat people using the current control scheme??

and thats not a major feature of the game at all. id say smoother, more realistic play and better manueverability with the skill stick was the best feature from my usage thus far..

sean, have u ever used the code for ice hockey? to make it like air hockey? check otu the wikipedia page on it, i added the code to the site. might not work with the wii version, but it does with the NES cartridge. makes the game 100X better.

EDIT: well, they erased it.

heresx the code.

on the screen where you are picking your team/game speed/period length, when you have everything set up, on both controller 1 and controller 2, hold down both A & B buttons on both controllers, for 5 seconds together. while still holding them down, hit the start button. that advances u to the player selection page for skinny-fat guys. jsut pick ur teams, and start the game, and it turns into air hockey mode, the puck dont stop till it either goes in, or hits a player and the player will pick up the puck. wind up with ur fat guy, take a slapper, and she'll bounce around the rink big time.

First of all,

Nobody uses "nub". I'm not a "nub" for saying the truth. The controls indeed suck a$$ on NHL 09, and while you'd think it would be improved since 08. It's not.

Nhl 09 is better than 08 (Media Hub is really cool), but worse than 07.

Soo..

I don't know how to play properly now? I got 1000/1000 in NHL 07 within maybe a week. NHl 09 is no where close to being the best in the series. Just because a game is newer, doesn't mean its the best.

For example:

Quantam of Solace is a good game, but the N64's "Goldeneye" is ten times better. Both of which, are 007 games.

And personally, I like Nhl 98 (n64) and NHL 07 (360).

BTW, somehow I knew how to call for a pass and I was in the same boat as you. I'm pretty sure it's in the manual, it's on the website/forums, if you go to controller settings in the game it maps out the controls for you, you could always just hit different buttons to figure out what they do....

....I mean, multiple ways to find out what the controls do. What more do you want?

The controls just don't feel right.

Usually it's X to shoot, Y to check, B to switch players, and A to pass. This whole "shoot with the analog stick" thing is pretty dumb. I believe you didn't have to use the analog stick in 07.

Anyways,

Playing in the AHL is "cool" for one game. But when it comes to the point of me playing 30 somethin games, only scoring a few goals, ONLY to get in the NHL. Where your forced to play X amount of games to get the legend card. It's just a dumb idea.

NHL 09 tried to focus on, which failed miserably:

NHLHL: Seriously. Theres so many different things you can add, but why this? It sounds like a good idea on paper, but the gameplay is awful. And finding people that actually play this game type (all the time, that don't lag/are douschebags, and just don't sit there the entire time) is incredibly difficult. Especially when everybody plays either

Rock Band
Cod4/5
Gears 2
Madden 09
Halo 3

or some random game for the hell of it. They tried to work in "NHL clans" and it's just stupid. It's like trying to do that in Madden.

Be a Pro Mode: Again, read the OP.

How about the NHL 09 team try and focus on other things? Kinda like how all the players lag randomly? How about the sticks going through bodys? And the instant replay? The crowd graphics? The team chants?

I could go on.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. Can you explain what it is you don't like about the controls at least? They've been like that for a while now. Are you comparing it to something??

BTW, somehow I knew how to call for a pass and I was in the same boat as you. I'm pretty sure it's in the manual, it's on the website/forums, if you go to controller settings in the game it maps out the controls for you, you could always just hit different buttons to figure out what they do....

....I mean, multiple ways to find out what the controls do. What more do you want?

He's just enjoying all the attention he's getting, as he didn't once address my point on the controls, he doesn't want to admit that just because he doesn't like them "they suck".

It's the same thing with dlc "I don't like them so they suck"

uhh..

I kinda just addressed the controls. It feels really awkward using them, and the old controls were much better. It doesn't make any sense to change them. Yeah, Analog stick is good for deuking. But not for "laying people out", and aiming. The whole aiming thing their trying to incorporate (shown in the demo) is useless. By the time you get your aim right, your player is on the ice and the other team has the puck. It just complicates things.

moop:

You need to play The Godfather.

It is a time consuming game, but it is FUN. Taking down rival families, extorting businesses, fulfilling hit contracts, doing favors, robbing banks, AND doing the jobs the Corleone family assigns you takes up MANY hours.

It is, in all honesty, the most under-rated game available for the Xbox 360.

Well,

Has anyone thought to post "Try a different genre?" There are other games outside of FPS and Sports games.

I'm assuming since you're all excited about [insert new War FPS/Crappy Halo game :p] that you haven't tried an RPG, a Fighting game, an Action game, etc, recently? If not you should try something out of those genres. Since you're on 360 I can't recommend Valkyria Chronicles (PS3 Exclusive), which would be my first choice, but you could try Fable 2, Oblivion, Mirror's Edge (That's even an FPS game, sort of), any of Square-Enix's new franchises, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Soul Calibur IV, so on and so forth. Granted none of these are grand spanking new, but if you haven't played them, they're worth a shot.

Anyways, point is, broaden your gaming horizons. :D

I suggested "The Godfather". It is an action game (a la "Saints Row", "Grand Theft Auto IV"), but it also has a slight RPG element (character creation, tailors & barbers, skills, weapons).

Also, it's based on one of the best films.

We're talking about upcoming games/games that are new.

Fallout 3 is relatively old, and most of the companies that produce FPS's are starting to work on different games. All of the FPS's came near the same time frame, so with the exception of "Halo Wars", we probably won't see many great FPS's for awhile. Their hasn't been a great racing game since I don't know when. Maybe a couple years. The last "good" racing game I played was Grid. Burnout Paradise was kind of lame, and so is most of the Nascar series. Mirrors Edge just doesn't look that good. It looked great on the demo, but now that I think of it. It's no Assassins Creed. Oblivion is also relatively old and I've had a bad history with it. By that I mean, I rented the game from Blockbuster. Played 5 minutes and then it had a disc unreadable, and I got a new game.

EndWar looks kinda like Star Wars Empire at War, which was a good game. HAWX might be cool too. But fighter plane games are pretty difficult online.

Seriously moop, if you have $20 get "The Godfather".

It is one of the most overlooked games in the Xbox 360 catalog, and they are working on "The Godfather II".

It got unfairly compared to the "Grand Theft Auto" series, but it is good. If you are wary about it, rent it from somewhere & try it out. If you don't like it, you don't like it. All I can do is make a suggestion based on my experience.

Halo Wars will be an RTS, not FPS. Halo 3: ODST is the next First Person Shooter in the Halo franchise.

How are you burning through so many games so fast? Fallout 3 isn't that old and neither is GOW2...

Moop the controls are much better this way in most peoples opinions. They take some getting used to of course and suggesting they go back to the old way is a step backwards. You're the only person I've ever known to complain about the analog controls in general since they implemented them. The NHL series is one that I've purchased every year since the original on Sega Genesis.

Anyway, it's neither here nor there. You don't like it, fine.

When were the controls like that? maybe on the original Xbox. I bought a 360 just to use the new "Stick Control" on NHL 07. The new controls give you so much more to play with than just hitting X to shoot. They allow you to move your stick separately from your player. I can actually do some different dekes aside from just pressing a button and having the player do the some one over and over. NHL 09 implemented stick lifts which I think is another great improvement.
I'll agree Be A Pro isn't exactly the best and could use some improvements. I mainly play dynasty mode and occasionally online mode.
I'm currently waiting for Online Dynasty mode :D

QFT.

I haven't even PLAYED the game, and the controls actually sound pretty awesome.
