View Full Version : Can't copy my save file to a memory card?

Ok, I'm trying to transfer my Rock Band save game file from my Xbox 360's harddrive to my memory card. But when I try to copy it a notification pops up saying, "This item cannot be transferred between storage devices." I know my memory card has sufficient memory and is working correctly because I tried transferring other data and it worked fine. What exactly is the problem here?

i could be wrong as i am not a memory card person but i know that xbox was having some problems with this in other games and it doesnt have to do with the game, just xbox being themselves. if you really need your file, bring your harddrive to your friends house or even your 360 for that matter

I like to have back-ups of my games in case my system dies. :(

If it's anything like the Wii, game developers can specify whether the save file can be copied to the SD card or not. GHIII on the Wii doesn't allow it, for example. So it's probably not an issue with your XBox, but rather stupid copy protection.
What the harm in backing up your save data is, I have no idea.

Same deal here, it's apparently working as designed. Guess those saved data files must contain nuclear weapons plans or something along those lines.
To make matters worse, I've actually had the game lock up during a save on my PS3. When the console was rebooted, my saved data file was corrupted. I lost all progress into the game and had to start from scratch.
Yet another double kick in the balls, brought to you by HMX.

I know Microsoft (and possibly Sony as well) are paranoid about paid content especially. To a lesser extent, they are concerned about save data.
Two reasons for the concern. First, it keeps people from sharing save files, especially right before achievements, etc. Not a huge deal, but it keeps a level playing field by forcing saves to be tied to a Gamertag. This leads into the second concern, hacking. As soon as you put a save file onto a thumb drive, someone will load it into a PC, view the raw data, and make it say whatever they want it to say. I could take my RB save file, change it to your Gamertag, give my BWT band a new name, and give them 1 Billion fans. Alternatively, I could just give myself every item and upgrade in a game like CoD4 and have an unfair advantage in online play.
@Muffster: Feel free to complain, but blaming the wrong people makes you sound like a fanboi/zealot/*******.

the issue i was told with the wii was just the file formats did not work correctly on an SD compared to an actual memory card for another system. You can copy saved files, they just dont play. Also, if your xbox dies, doesnt mean the hard drive is. The hard drive is probably the most stable component on the xbox. If you must have the save, you can buy a 20 gig hard drive from best buy for around 30 dollars i believe and it comes with a trasfer cable. Its basically a really big memory card.

Er, how exactly am I blaming the wrong people? Didn't HMX develop the RockBand code?
I have no other PS3 games that prevent backing up save files to a memory card. Any sane person can surely see the reason why there is a necessity to do so, unless you actually enjoy losing your progress 90% through the game.

its for security purposes and i gaurantee that they will release a patch in the future to fix it. And also, you are blaming harmonix when sonys product faileed

Really? If it's Sony's doing, how do you explain the OP not being able to do the same on a 360?

im not saying its sony's fault, im saying ea did it for security purposes most likely if they did it on purpose, other wise, im sure it will be in the first patch . You really need to calm down, you dont need it on a memory card. and im saying its sony's fault that your ps3 crashed while saving. Tell them thanks for making you start over.

My apologies, I was referencing your comment about making backups, and did not realize it was about PS3. My mistake.
I'm not totally sure what would have caused a problem like that. How were you doing the save file backup? Was it through the game, or through the PS3 memory management system?

Interestingly enough I started the game from a memory card so thats always where its been saving. I'll have to try and remember to try and copy the save to my HD tonight and see what happens. I wonder if it moves with your gamertag (as mine is on the memory card as well for easy transport to friends homes). I was thinking of getting one of the 512meg cards and moving everything over as my 64meg card is down to 6 megs free. Sounds like I might not be able to do that moving forward tho.

I was using the PS3's "Saved Data Utility". I've attached a URL below which explains how it works.
Interestingly enough, if you read the notes, it says it's possible to move protected save data files to a memory card and vice versa to the HDD, but not copy them. Personally, I haven't tried this, but that's news to me.
At any rate, being able to move instead of copy defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to accomplish, that being to make a back-up copy of my saved data in the event of game lockup, HDD failure, etc.. Memory cards can of course fail too.

I'm perfectly calm, just expressing a valid concern I have with the game not allowing me to make back-ups of my saved data file.
Oh, and thanks for clearing up the "fact" that all game lockups are caused by hardware. In that case, my congratulations go out to HMX to be the first company in the history of mankind to produce a software program without any bugs in it.
Get real.

If that is the case, I would assume this was a bug in the utility, rather than some aspect of the save file. Still a valid concern, but probably better addressed to Sony.

Try moving instead of copying. Worked flawlessly for me.

Good to hear moving works, although it's of no help to those of us who are in the good habit of making back-up copies of all our saved game data files.
