View Full Version : Please Add Voice Chat To Ps3!!!!

This is a basic basic feature in 2007. If it were 2001, I'd understand. But it's 2007... xbox had this basic feature in 2004. Please find a way to add chat, it makes it almost impossible to get a band or even keep quick online plays together. Please add to the next patch. If it is already in the ps3 version, please make it an obvious feature --I haven't come across it easily yet. Thanks

It's kind of rediculous that the 360 version has voice chat but the ps3 doesn't, really hope they patch it because online just isn't as fun without the communication part.
What makes it worse is that there's no way to write messages while in a game with the PS3 so there isn't even an option to text.

This is an Awsome game, BUT...... a way to communicate online would make it the best ever. This would help with picking songs others like and hate, or commenting on how ppl played. This would be a great add on. Plz............... add communication.;)

This is a really annoying situation and is the reason my 360 version of RB gets played about 10x as much. When online with PS3 version it feels like I am just playing by myself and something is truly missing. This needs to be added.

Agreed, PS3 version has a very unfulfilling online experience due to lack of voice chat. Needs to be added.

The guitar and the drums have headset jacks and adapters. Plug 'em in and get the party started. Online is a blast!

Only way I could get it to work on Xbox was to start a private chat w/ my party. Anyone else have this problem?

People keep telling me it is there on the PS3 too, but not that I can see. We have the superior connection method, Bluetooth. I have been told it works, but nobody uses it... I don't believe it. It is a natural request, talking to your band mates is very important.

I'd say this is a complaint for Sony rather than Harmonix.
The 360 has voice chat because Microsoft made it an integrated part of the 360 platform. Every online game for the 360 supports the same chat features.
Rock Band on the PS3 must not have it because the PS3 doesn't supply that feature automatically.

I guess HMX could add the voice chat feature. I mean WarHawk has it. But I can bet as soon as Home comes out, every game will probably support voice chat through the PSN servers and not the Rock Band servers.

I have had no problems using chat in XBL. Maybe this should go in the Tech Support forum under a new name so people can post their console and headset setup and work on a fix.

I'll create a thread there. It doesn't affect me too much cuz I only play w/ people on my FL anyways, but if other people have the prob it could be annoying to try to set up a private chat w/ strangers...

I was wondering if my bluetooth headset was going to work with ps3. I guess this answers my question.
On top of that the online play is so cumbersom it's next to impossible to meet up with your friends to play rockband online. We just keep sending invitations back and forth and then they expire!

Yeah it sucks that you can talk to your bandmates...communication is essential in any band, even a fake band. I know that when I'm playing online it feels really stale, like playing with the CPU. But no sense in crying about it, there are not going to fix this....:(

haven't tried online yet, but disappointing to hear that there's no chat available. Can't believe any online game can be released without a chat option, how lame. Seems to be somewhat common on the PS3 though, which sucks.

That's not true, practically every game with online play for PS3 has chat support, the fact the RockBand doesn't is beyond me.

I completely agree, Rock Band needs some form of communication for online play.
Seriously, how hard would it be to activate the mic while on the band setup and track selection screen? Or at least put in a console so we can type to each other. I have never before seen an online game lacking communication options (except Resident Evil: Outbreak series, and anyone who has played that can attest to the frustration of the lack of communication).
HMX, you had communications options in your previous online game (Amplitude), why can't we have it now?
Please make this happen, its frustrating not being able to talk to the "leader" online, and totally ruins the experience by making me feel completely disconnected. I feel like im playing in a band with random bots, whose abilities are randomly chosen, and on randomly selected songs.
So, pease, make some form of communicaton happen, for us whose friend's list aren't big enough to have a full band playing in-house every night, would immensly appreciate it.
ps - thanks Johnlok, you da man ;)

I totally want voice chat too. For right now, I've been playing online with people from my friends list so when we pick a new song, we're chatting on AIM but it would be nice to be able to have voice chat in between songs.

Well, this is what I don't understand. How can there be no voice chat, but the specs of the game posted in Gamespot, CNet shopping and many many others say, "Connectivity: Voice Chat"
Maybe you activate it pressing a button in your controller or something? We should test this out!

I figure that if voice chat was avialable in RB, there would be some instructions on how to activate it in the manual, but there isn't. They would'nt leave you to figure it out on your own.
Note: I really haven't read the manual in detail...:D

I'm not a programmer but the PS3 OS has a chat feature, and other PS3 games have voice chat. Even if HMX had to do a bit more work, you'd think they would spend the time to do so since this function is so essential. It's obviously not impossible to have voice chat on PS3 games.

actually, if you hold the l2 or r2 button when you are singing vocal track, it puts up a microphone symbol that made me thought it was voice chat (that's how the xbawks users initiate it), but alas; my bend members could hear nothing.
Please add this feature, HMX.

I don't want some ****ing sloppy work-around that forces me to start a voice chat session independent of the game. I mean, right now we could use vent or skype, but that's bull****. I want it built into the game. It's ridiculous that it's not. We were voice-chatting in the PS2 days for Christ's sake, here it is 7 years later when voice chat is easier and more widespread than ever before and this game doesn't even have that feature?
Anyways, I don't blame Harmonix as much as EA. EA probably forced them to shove this game out the door without a lot of bells and whistles that Harmonix wanted. And aside from issues like this it is a truly awesome game.

1) calm down its a game relax
2) if PSN worked like XBL then it wouldn't matter if a game company bothered to half ass a voice chat function since you;d have the function in every system application. HMX likely ran out of time and rather than do it wrong just left it for patching later or another interation of rock band that may come by later.

Well, between this and the lack of support for PS2 GH controllers, I am a bit less thrilled with the product. Granted, Rock Band has a long way to fall in my heart because I think it's one of the best games ever put out, but I do find these two issues irritating.
The other night, my wife and I were playing online with a couple of other friends in a different part of the state. With both sets of us having to be on speaker phone in order to communicate, it was awkward at best, and downright frustrating at times (particularly since there was a slight delay over the phone that meant we could hear our friend singing about half a second behind the music coming from our TV).
More than anything else, I'm hoping this issue gets resolved via patch, although I have no idea how likely that is.

it'd be similar even with the chat. XBL chat works well but isn't the quickest thing around.

1) I am calm.... calmly pissed off. Hehe, JK. Like I said it's not like the game isn't awesome otherwise, this is just an annoying aspect of the game that seems like it would be so trivial to remedy. Plus I paid $170 for it and I think I have the right to expect to get a little bit more than I do with $20 games.
I don't get the "just a game" argument people often use. Yes, it's not like it's taking food off my plate or taking the roof off my head. It's not affecting the most important aspects of my life, but what the heck does that have to do with anything? We're here to discuss the game. When your 360 dies just after the warranty and you get upset, should I say "relax, it's just a console?" No, I should have some empathy and say "sorry for your loss, bro. That truly sucks."
2) As I said in my post, that's just BS to expect people to do work-arounds like that. In this day and age, one should be able to just press a button and talk into the provided mic with everyone currently in the band. Online, people are always coming and going from the band, so it's an annoyance to have to adjust the external chat constantly.
Off-topic: Sure, it might be a nice option to be able to chat independently of games, but even so, as-is I'll take the PSN over XBL any day.

it'd be similar even with the chat. XBL chat works well but isn't the quickest thing around.I don't doubt it, but I imagine it would be easier to mute the mic during gameplay and unmute it during menu navigation than to have to grab and mute the phone all the time (or worse, have to hang up and redial after every song). I believe someone mentioned upthread that XBox users can activate and deactivate the microphone with a simple button combination on the controller, unless I misread it.

I've bailed on a couple of sessions because the leader kept picking songs I didn't know (since I was singing, this is kind of important), and I didn't have any way to give him some feedback.
They've already integrated the PS3 OS into the game in the form of messaging...why not support the OS chat mode?

I hope everyone else doesn't take a tip from M$ and start charging for services. Live is the exception, not the norm.
Anyways, this has nothing to do with the PSN service. We do have the ability to chat with PSN for FREE, and every online game I've played on my PS3 supports chat, except Rock Band.

360 is better hands down just b/c of Xbox Live
a) This is a PS3 thread, you are completely off-topic.
b) That's your opinion. Opinions are neither correct nor incorrect. But my opinion is completely opposite. Live adds nothing over PSN that I want and is really annoying to use, plus I have to pay for it. Also my 360 tends to freeze up a lot--I fear the RRoD coming soon. All those reasons plus XMB > Dashboard make me prefer the PS3 by a wide margin.
c) Shut up, troll.

I agree. I just got the game last night and was having a great time playing all day today! Then I tried my hand at online. I was pretty excited to be able to play with some other people since I played for about 4 hours by myself (still no regrets).
So I get online and I'm waiting for people and finally I get a band together. Crap, I'm the leader (by the way, does anyone know how to pass leader?). So I pick a song and I see everyone picking hard or expert. So now I feel like a meathead cuz I only know how to play easy (drums). We play the song and I was having a blasty blast! Everyone did good.
So now comes the time to pick another song. Now, I'm thinking, turds, I want to keep playing with these guys but, number 1, I don't know if they will like the song I pick, and number 2, are they pissed because I can only play easy and they want to play with a drummer that is more experienced??
So in the end, I had alot of fun playing with other people. Hell, I got to play with Ace Frehley, some guy with spikes coming out of his head and face, and some old dude who looked like a bum! Great times for sure but just would like to get feedback from the people I'm playin so I know that they are having fun too!
Sorry for the long tale! Thanks to those that were playing with me today, even thought I'm on easy but I'm tryin!
And again, can you pass the leader or how does it decide who is the leader?
Thanks for any feedback! :D
P.S. I'll be on tomorrow from 7:00am to probably 3:00pm central time if anybody wants to play with a drummer! Hopefully I'll be up to medium , lol. Gamertag is dinodevil, hope to see ya on!!!

I remember reading a post on the ps forums that you could start a private chat with a friend and then start playing the game. that would at least be one way to communicate....but was that information really correct?
I created a chat room through the xmb and invited my friend. We then tried to start up a rock band game but it wouldn't start the game without first closing the chat box. ps3 needs to learn how to multitask! anyhoo, is there any way to actually start some kind of private chat room that will still run on the ps3 while playing a game?
I'm guessing not....considering you can't even access the xmb's instant messaging through the ps button....but if there is, anyone know how it's done?
c'mon harmonix! let's get some patching for voice chat on the ps3 version!

I gotta say I agree with you all completely...granted i only own a 360, mainly due to the fact i got it months ago and cant afford a ps3 yet, but i do agree you need the ability to voice chat on this game...we have it on the 360 and it makes the online play so much more fun...just being able to voice chat with ppl ur playing with online makes ya feel much more like ur playing in a real band, thereby adding to the fun of the experience. If we have voice chat on the 360, i think ps3 also needs this capability, and i also think itd be way cool to be able to play cross-platform online altho thats not likely to happen.

Actually, the PS3 does have integrated voice chat, *exactly* like XBox's. The only difference is, Microsoft forces developers to support it in their game, and Sony lets the developer decide whether or not they want to use it.
So, it's Harmonix's fault for not using what is right there waiting to be used.
