Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon) are in talks to star as the villains in Marvel Studios' Iron Man 2, being directed by Jon Favreau from a script by Justin Theroux, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

THR says that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils. Variety adds that Rourke would play the Crimson Dynamo. "He's considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor," says the trade.

Rockwell would play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, being played by a returning Robert Downey Jr.

Rourke and Rockwell would be joining a cast that also includes the returning Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, who is replacing Terrence Howard.

Another part -- one for Stark's assistant Natasha -- is still open.

The project is eyeing a spring start in Manhattan Beach. Paramount will release the movie May 7, 2010.

Neither of them strike me as the villain type, but then again, neither did Jeff Bridges, and he pulled that off admirably.

Possibly the third installment, ( If that happens ). Details are pretty sparse on the Sin City sequel ( It still may be a prequel ) But according to ain't it cool, and a long lost article on superherohype, Rourke said he has not been offered anything, but would like to be back if it was. (Offered )

I don't know much about the original comics but isn't someone called The Mandarin supposed to be Iron Man's arch-nemesis? How many movies until that dude comes out?

I'm sure the movie will be great no matter who the villain(s) is (are), but it sort of feels like waiting for the main act, no?

The Mandarin was a big part of Iron Man's earlier stories, but he did have a lot of other big players such as the Crimson Dynamo, the Titanium Man, and all those other robot-themed dudes (he also fought Frankenstein once in the 80s).

There's an animated Iron Man movie that came out a little over a year ago that features the Mandarin, and I've heard some people saying that the bald terrorist dude who kept fingering his ring in the first Iron Man movie was supposed to be a derivation of the Mandarin, but who knows. He's a very tricky character to pull off considering the utterly and completely racist terms in which he was created back in the 60s, though I guess the same could be said of the Crimson Dynamo and the US view of Russians back then :)

The ring dude's name was Raza, if that makes much difference. (Novel. :D)

Raza worked for a group called the 10 rings. Being Chinese, I have to say they need to use Mandarin's real name or create a fake one. I'm not offended by it, but here in 2009, that name is lame for the general public. It's like if a Russian villain was around, let's call him the Red Scare! It's very 50s and 60s. If the Mandarin was a title, it'd help a little, but it sounds awful.

I also rather see him sooner than later, but I guess when he shows, it'll be for Avengers or Iron Man 3. Assuming this rumor is true.

Sam Rockwell playing a villain? Thanks, I needed that laugh.

And yes, I absolutely adore Sam and a majority of his work...but come on, villain?

Yeah!

Mandarin is a tad bit "racist" (by today's terms), but he is an important part of the Iron Man story.

I would actually love to see Mandarin make an appearance in one of these movies.

I see, thanks for that... I read up on The Mandarin a little (i.e., Wikipedia) and the whole concept seems a bit behind the times in 2009. Maybe it worked better when East Asia was a more exotic and mysterious place but I don't think the character would fit very well with the very modern setting of the first movie.

Didn't know who this was... looked it up... another redhead???

Variety is reporting the rumor that Emily Blunt is in talks to play Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2. Romanoff is a Soviet super spy who doubles as Black Widow, a beauty in a skintight black costume that is enhanced by high-tech weaponry.

She would join the previously-announced villains Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell in the sequel. Again directed by Jon Favreau, the Marvel Studios film sees the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, while Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard.

Blunt's credits include The Devil Wears Prada, The Jane Austen Book Club and Charlie Wilson's War. She also stars in The Wolfman, coming to theaters in November.

The Justin Theroux-scripted Iron Man 2 will begin production this spring for a release by Paramount on May 7, 2010.

Nice find! I don't really know who she is... the photo in the article seems to be one of the more flattering ones I've seen of her on the net.

Here's what she looked like as a redhead (which Natasha is supposed to be): http://www.lahiguera.net/cinemania/actores/emily_blunt/fotos/3235/emily_blunt.jpg

ANY chance they won't force her to be a redhead? Didn't think so... too bad haha
