I've joined a "biggest weight loss challenge" on another board I frequent. Due to my thyroid disorder I was diagnosed with last year, i gained a little weight that i've been meaning to lose. Not like morbidly obese, but around 40 lbs. I'd like to fit into my size 6 pants by summer.
So i'm doing really good this last week, lots of water, lots of low calories, fruits veggies etc.
I step on the scale and it says 15 lbs lost. I was like holy cow, that cant be right, or could it? Then i see that somehow the adjuster must have been moved, because it was off by 10 lbs :( So instead of 15, i lost 5 this week, but i'm still happy as loss is loss.

Well this is my 4th year in a row that my NYR was to lose weight. I also start good, but 3 months in I always just give up. But I really feel this is the year to stay committed to it.....then I again I always feel that :(

Well, between 2 and 3 months haha, but yeah my problem is that even after I give up trying to lose weight, I always put on more weight then I lost, so essentially I am going backwards every year. I gotta get it going so I don't keep falling behind

Also keep in mind that depending on the kind of exercise you do, you may also be gaining muscle mass as you burn fat, which means you loose weight slower.

I can't remember the last time I weighed myself. At least 10 years, maybe 15. I don't even own a scale.

Made me wonder why you hated it... you don't score *that* high, do you? :D

dont worry too much about it daesania, women loose weight slower than men do... its normal.
also, might help if you dont focus on the numbers too much and just try to live healthier and eat healthier. thats what i did and before i even realized it i went from a 42 to a 35... and i could even run without feeling like i was gonna have a heart attack.

I'm 6'2", 230 Lbs.
Size 38, I dont think thats too bad, but I do need to lose some.

i was reading in a magazine today that eating nuts and doing yoga helps because it helps with the cortisol levels. your cortisol levels raise when youre nervous so thats where the yoga (or whatever calming technique you wish) comes in, and something about nuts helping to refocus the cortisol deposits or whatever.. and the most cortisol receptors are in the belly, and thats why the weight goes there first....or something like that.
*prays for non derailment due to the subject matter of NUTS*
also, what helped for me was keeping record of everything i ate and second guessing my food choices.. and keeping a bottle of water handy at all times. its slow, but the slower, the better because those who lose weight more rapidly tend to gain it all back more than those who lose it slowly over a period of time.

nono, if you read, i'm happy with what i lost, i was just bummed that i thought i had lost 15 when the scale adjuster had got bumped.
As for not weighing myself as someone posted, well, that's kinda not possible when you're competing in a challenge, no? I dont get in challenges to lose :D

Can't it be both? That's the beauty of it...
As for the actual scale, I never use it. I have started to eat a bit healthier as of late, though. More fruit, less snacks, that kind of thing. Not necessarily to lose weight (although it'd be nice), but more because my diet could use some more balance.

I've learned to accept the fact that my body mass is highly seasonal. By about this point every year, I end up around 235 pounds... by the end of the summer, I'm back down to 205, and the cycle starts anew.
...I wonder if I'm half grizzly bear or something. Would explain my hirsute propensities.

To all those lazy bums(myself included), trying to lose weight...there is a way to do it without much exercise(outside of the usual going to work, playing with your children, and rock band drums...because after all that who has time to exercise?
Anyhow in two months I've lost 25 lbs(yes I know guys lose weight faster than girls, but I digress).
Keep in mind just because this is working(and continues to work for me, doesn't mean it will for everyone. However if you want to lose some weight with minimal effort(at first that is...you will eventually have to add exercise because your metabolism will adjust to your new eating habits and the weight loss will slow down), then here's how you do it.
First cut out ALL soda that isn't a diet of some sort.
Yes I know diet soda tastes like someone dunked a regular soda in a skunk's butt, but soda's are around 140calories per can and 220 per 20oz bottle. They add up very very quickly.
I recommend Cherry Coke zero. NO I'm not going to sit here and lie to your face and say that it tastes exactly like cherry coke, because it doesn't.
However I will say it is the closest diet/zero calorie cola you can get that won't make you barf after every drink. It does take a few days to get used to the different taste, but after a while you don't notice it.
Cut out all fast AND resturaunt foods.
Fast foods have so many empty calories in them you can go over your daily allowance easily in one meal.
'sit down' resturaunts can be just as bad if not worse. The reason being that the portions they serve in these places are sometimes triple what you should be eating in a meal.
Most people try to starve themselves throughout the day. Skipping meals, or barely eating at all then having one giant meal for supper.
BAD idea. See when you start skipping meals it slows your metabolism down to a crawl. Your body hangs onto every tiny scrap of food and calories you give it, and then when you gorge yourself on your one big meal, even if you only eat 1000 calories(which in a normal situation would cause you to lose weight), you'll still gain weight because your met. is so slow at that point.
SO here's my eating schedule. and AGAIN what works for me might not work for you. Try some variation of it, and sooner or later you'll find something that works for you.
What I do is eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast at around 530 am(work or I wouldn't be up this early
When I get to work at 630 am I have a cherry coke zero(no calories), that ususally lasts me a few hours.
Have a hundred calorie snack at 10am.
Lunch time 1230pm I have a small lunch.
Bowl of chicken soup, ham sandwich, left overs from the previous night, etc. Something small, but not like a leaf of lettuce, or an apple have a Ch c zero here as well.
I usually eat a decent dinner around 430-5pm. Usually whatever I want. Pork chop, steak, hamburger, potatoes, veggies, etc. Just not massive portions.
If before I would eat 2 pork chops, now I only eat 1, etc.
Go to bed, rinse wash repeat.
It's a bit hard to get used to the smaller portions for the first 5 days to a week, but once you do, it's actually pretty hard to over eat as your stomach shrinks, and if you try to eat as much as you used to you'll get a pretty bad stomach ache.
I've lost 25lbs in 2 months from just doing that. I'm about to start exercising to try and knock off the remaining bit, but I'm keeping the weight off by doing the above.

I dont even recommend using diet coke for weightloss. It still contains an artificial sweetener, and your body consumes it like it would calories. The best bet you can have (drink wise) is ice cold water with a splash of lemon juice. Ice cold water makes your body burn a small amount of calories because it heats the water to your body temperature. I'm drinking roughly 2 glasses of crystal lite and 4ish glasses of lemon water. I need SOME flavor during the day atleast.
But, I do agree that small meals during the day really help. I normally start off the day with lunch (i wake up ~11ish), a sandwich or something, then around 2-3 I'll have a fruit of some sort (tangelos for this week), 5pm I'll have dinner, 7pm I'll have another fruit or veggie, and again at 10 I'll have another small snack. I normally dont go to bed b efore 4am, hense the 10pm snack. Its not advised that you eat 2 hours before bed and only drink water during that time.

I can't do diet sodas. One of the artificial sweeteners they like to use tends to give me migraines. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this and attempted to use diet Dr. P to get rid of a migraine (caffeine usually helps, widens the blood vessels and relieves the pressure), but it got worse. A lot worse.

hawkofva: Good to know I'm not the only one with that problem. Most people think I'm nuts for mentioning it.
And Daesania, Crystal Lite has that same artificial sweetener in it.

Yes, I know it does, which is why i limit myself to 2 glasses. Most programs (IE: Weight watchers online) will allow 2 servings of an artificial sweetener.

5 lbs is a great accomplishment for a week... a 15 lb loss in a week would be incredibly unhealthy or mean that you're extremely obese.
There's some great advice in this thread... I'd add (or repeat) that it's important to watch your sugars (more than fat or calories). And "sugars" basically means carbs, particularly the bad kind. Atkins may have been a fad but the low-carb part was on the mark, if you ask me (the part that says you can pig out on bacon and peanut butter- not as helpful)
Fruit and fruit juice can actually be pretty harmful in a weight loss program despite being considered healthy foods. Cutting out flour, white bread, white rice and replacing them with pita bread, brown rice, wheat bread, etc. is also a great step if you can take it.
The diet component is generally a lot more significant than the exercise component although doing both is obviously best. Besides the weight loss and looking better, a better diet can really lower your risk of health problems like diabetes in the future, so I wish luck to you all!
