View Full Version : Pros and Cons of Character Creation

Thankfully there are more pros than cons that I can think of but overall I am very pleased with what they did with character creation.
Cons
- The facial choices were a bit lacking. There were only about 5 faces to choose from if I'm not mistaken. It would have been good to choose a head shape, eye shape/color, nose shape, etc. Just the main features that made up your head/face. Then again this game is called Rock Band not "Create a Rocker".
- Art placement. I've already seen a few people complain about this but there is a point to it. Being able to place a tattoo on the neck, back, etc. would be nice.
Pros
- The clothing options were pretty well thought of. I mean they even created seperate catagories for different styles with each having quite a bit to choose from.
- Art creation. I love the fact that I can create my own art using the shapes/letters that they provide you with in case you want to get creative just like Forza 2. I mean they already had a skull art I could have used for facepaint but what I ended up coming up with just looked a lot better and went well with the Red Skelly Attire I created for my character when he plays bass guitar.
- Being able to mess with color options even after clothing is purchased. I mean that seemed to be a problem with quite a few games that I've played that allowed character creation and involved purchasing clothing. Sometimes people just want to try something different after their first choice after all.

I'll say that that us not being ale to do much with head shape and face structure could be because of teh eleaborate hair and facial hair. A lot of teh hair has phyics routines that may be affected by certian skull shapes. It's something that could have been fixed but time likely ran out after a point.

That and the fact that each facial model has to be animated to lipsync the songs (and the lipsyncing is pretty accurate).

The only con I can see is it's so in depth I'm just spending too much time doing it. I finally got my bundle delivered the other day and couldn't wait to play. 2 hours later I'm still finding myself creating different rockers. Love it.

My 2 cons are that I am using guitars to design characters rather than controllers and that if I copy a design and place it somewhere else if I move it then it also moves at the other place that it was applied. Oh, and 1 more...it limits how small you can scale designs.
Overall though it's great fun and a mini-game in itself to see what you can come up with. :)

As long as the hair and facial hair props have the same morphs in them that the mesh for the head does, more face shapes shouldn't be a big issue. The different mouth and lip positions for the phonemes are probably done with morphs, as well, so as long as the facial hair has the same ones as the face, still no issue.
Some of the hairstyles have serious collision issues with some of the glasses.... lol.
I have a lot of fun with the character creation, though. I also like that you can change the colours on stuff after you've purchased it. Very cool.
I'd like some more jewelry options, though.

I'm hoping there's a patch in the future with more facial types and more hairstyles. I hate the fact that there aren't any "normal" hair styles. I'm half black and don't wear my hair as a massive 'fro, in dreads, or shaven. Its too bad we can't scale the size of the hair, tho. That would help a lot in my opinion.

I love the all the clothing options etc and I can get past the few facial options. I am disappointed that there appears to be no way to put tats on the back area of characters.

I'd like to see a small add-on pack with more options. More faces, more hair, more accessories. Like, could we get some sane haircutes. There are rockstars with normal hair.

My biggest problem with character creation is that all of the models look like they've been on either steroids or amphetmines for years. I WANT FAT AND SKINNY PEOPLE. Every game that I've ever had the option to create a character, I've created a morbidly obese man in a kilt named Fatty McFlugal (The Mad Scotsman). What if I wanted to create Ruben Studdard? Aretha Franklin? John Popper of Blues Traveler? C'mon HMX, let them eat cake! And cookies! And ice cream!

I agree, I tend to like to create characters that look like me. But I have normal hair and am chubby, so it's impossible on RB.

Yeah, that is a bummer... I made mine all the way to the "heavy" side of the scale, and it just made her all muscular and bulked up. :/
"Muscular" should be a separate scale from "heavy", imo.

Definitely agree with this. If you try to create a skinny character, they just end up looking lanky or strung out. I like the idea of having flabby characters. Besides, most people are going to want to create themselves in the game and I rather have something thats accurate rather than idealized.

I love the character editor in general -- waaaay too good a way to waste time when I should be working on songs! :D
I agree that more facial types would be great, as would a wider range of body shape adjustment... I like what's there now, but more flexibility is always appreciated :) I'd also like to have the ability to do back tattoos.
I love the wide variety of clothing options (and the fact that they're sorted into different shops, it's kind of a nice touch). My tiny nitpick with the fashions is that I wish necklaces were a separate option like all of the other accessories are. I suppose there could be clipping issues if you decided to wear a spiked collar with your Professor shirt and tie, but they do manage to put tall boots and pants together properly, so I would think the code to handle overlapping is there somewhere...
Totally fun, though. I've had no problem making 99% accurate avatars for my various fictional characters :D

what bugs me the most is you can't change your character's physique after you created them. you'll have to pay to get a hair change, but nothing can do with height, weight, face shape, eye color, or even sex. When I first got the game i created a character in a haste, not knowing i'm stuck with her look. Now i have too much history with the character to delete her.

here's what you should do...create a skinny hot female character, take off her shirt (bra will still remain) and put her in shorts...then add a downward pointing triangle tattoo (the same color as her hair) as far down on her front as possible...it should be partially covered by shorts...racing stripe anyone??? :D then take two red circle tattoos and put them under her bra so that they are partially visible....he he he.

It's an improvement all around over GH where you can only pick a character, color swap or apply a minor alternate costume. The only thing I don't like is that you cannot put tatoos in the back, while back tatoos are much more popular than chest tatoos, from what I have seen.

Christ! And here I thought my friend was the only sick bastard to do that.
Anyways, I would love for tattoos to be allowed any where on the body. Also I want to see more artist specifc tats, also artist flash. Still waiting on a game that will allow me to import art to add to a character. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'd pay good money for specific artist flash as DLC.
Also interested in more varied facial hair. More types or lengths of long hair would be nice. Also noticed the clashing of some hairstyles with glasses issue. Like on long and wavy hair any glasses you put on pushes the hair out for no apparent reason. Oh and it'd be hella cool if you could use any hat on any hairstyle.
Not enough G.W.A.R. gear or KISS boots . Why can't I wear more than one wrist item? Or rings? Or chose which wrist/finger an item goes on? Oh and what about different eyebrows? And facial piercings? Body piercing? And WTF is up with there being no punctuation or symbols what so ever in the fonts for tats/stickers? And one of my biggest peeves is that things can only get but so small when scalling. Love the warp feature though, really helps out more than you'd think.
And yeah what the hell is up with the slim pickings on facial types and body types. I can't be overweight but I can have red eyes?
Anyone else notice that if you make a band logo it shows up on your drummers bass drum? Freakin' Sweet!
P.S.

Where the hell is the headbanging and hairmill moves for my rocker with the Metal movements?!?!
while your whole post touched on alot of my annoyances......a game with so much rock/metal w/o the hair metal headbanging and swinging is really a letdown, the guys onstage are way too mellow when it comes to playing some metallica for instance. just an opinion.
i'm sure future versions will incorporate all the minor details that were overlooked while trying to code this amazing game, simply put if you can follow the model of create a character from most wrestling games, while also blending in some unique content genre specific, signature moves would be a welcome addition also.
but after GH, do we really have anything to complain about as far as customization?

It made me sort of sad that I couldn't tat up my rocker's back: the tattoos on her chest and stomach are great, but it looks a little odd that she had a completely inkless back. This is particularly frustrating since there are some great default tats that seem tailor made for going on a character's back.
I'm also sad there's no option for facial piercings at all: she needs a head full of shiny metal.
Still, I just love the feature, and the great stuff far outweighs the minor quibbles. I just hope there's a download pack that drops a whole bunch more clothing, hair, and tattoo options in sometime in the near future.

I also found it funny how you couldn't make chubby/overweight people either. I mean there are quite a few of us gamers out there that would like to have a character close to what we look like in real life, or maybe that's just me. I mean my character is pretty close to life, if I hit the gym to tone what muscle I have and lost a good 40 pounds or so. lol
But as far as more detail to face creation, it would be possible to do so and still have it be able to lip sync. Only problem is it would have taken programming a lot longer to get that done. I don't mean Tiger Woods/Smackdown Vs Raw style face morphing either. I just meant like preset selections for parts of the face like "Nose 1, Nose 2, etc" as well with other parts of the head. So that way everyone doesn't look alike as far as heads go and are able to mix things up a little bit more.

Yeah, I know, but I'm pretty sick of having to not get something because of the few that will abuse that something. That and I'm pretty sick of dicks and **** being considered more evil than violence in media altogether.
Nevermind the whole Ao rating being for nothing really. Maybe I as an adult would like to purchase an Ao game or content. Really now, how much longer is it going to take for people to realize games aren't just for children.
Anyways, another thing I want to say is awesome about the create-a-character is the instruments. Mostly the guitars. Man talk about really being able to pick a guitar. Want this color on that guitar? No problem. That color with that pickgaurd? No problem. And so manyother choices. While I do love the cool, weird and unique guitars and skins of said guitars in Guitar Hero, what ya get in Rock Band is even cooler.
It'd be cool though if for the drums you could build/add on to the set. If for no other reason than to make it look different. As it is now though the choices are pretty limited, better than nothing but limited in comparison to the guitars. Same for the mic. Sure you can't do much with a mic, but you can sure as hell do alot with a mic stand, Steven Tyler has proved that.
Which brings up another movement issue. Alright cool, the singers lips are synching up really nicely but what about the rest of the things a good front man/woman can/should do? Where's "kneeling down and getting up into the crowds face" move? What about "climbing on the set speakers and jumping down" move? I mean I've seen the "in harmony back to back" move with another band member or the same just looking at them really up close and singing. Also have seen the "everyone jump in the air and stick for a second before coming down" move, well everyone but the drummer.
Poor drummer, relegated to the back of the stage. Seemingly always sitting in the dark. Come on give'em something more, give'em a rotating drum set for beating the game or something.
P.S.
Don't know why I didn't to think to say this sooner but, how come I can't change a female character's breast size? Childish? Sure why not, but you know you want o be able to do it.

When I first was creating my dude, I put the weight to the max and he looked buff. I was one sad panda. Then I thought maybe he'll look fat if I make him short.
So now he can be short and buff.
Some of us want to make a tribute band rocker with his gut hanging out of his shirt.

For my female guitarist, I went with the weight slider at about 2/3 and the height slider at about 1/3. So she's got nicely toned arms and a flat tummy, but really thick thighs and a ghetto booty. Looks kinda weird...

I'd love to see some more realistic or useful clothing added. The Punk category is filled with clothing that just made me think "homeless." Don't get me wrong, I love Hobo Singer as much as the next guy, but my rocker can afford to occasionally wash his clothing.

- No Kiss boots.
That should be the only statement I need to make, but while I'm whining I'll add to it.
- Nut hugger athletic shorts...how can I make Stewart Copeland w/o those!
- Lack of short hair styles- we need crew cuts, flat tops, fades, and friar tucks!
- School Boy outfit? Haven't seen it to equip Angus yet.
- ZZ Top Beards (OK the long beard is close)
- Hats? maybe it's something I still need to unlock
- more face choices
- And ability to use the main controller for character design. The guitar and drums are a pain to use in the create mode.
-some hair styles seem to have a funny green background color (not so noticeable during gigs)
-cumbersome art program, but forgivable because of the options
And yes, the game would have benefited well with more body types and head sizing options, but I'm not sure that's anything that could realistically be patched.
On to the positives.
-The clothing options are fairly varied and unique.
-female hair choices are awesome
-slutty clothes....Check
-ability to add art to clothing, face, etc. is outstanding
-Ability to customize colors on clothes...
-and to do it after purchase, PRICELESS!
