The old Battle of The Bands from last year:

The Who: Beat The Rolling Stones, lost to The Beatles
The Rolling Stones: Lost in the first round to The Who
The Beatles: Defeated The Beach Boys, The Who, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and Rush; won The Battle of The Bands.

The Who - Awesome Live band, one of the hardest rocking bands of the 60's/70's
The Beatles - Incredibly influential, awesome songwriting, one of the first concept albums ever
Rolling Stones - meh

For live performances, musical talent & just plain awesomeness The Who

I agree with all of this except songwriting. I like the Who's songwriting more than the Rolling Stones. Thats probably the most subjective out of all of them.

And maybe Lennon being better than Daltrey too.

Live performance
The Who>The Rolling Stones>The Beatles

Influence on the 60s
The Beatles>The Rolling Stones>The Who

Influence on the 70s on out
The Beatles>The Who>The Rolling Stones

stones are the best out of these 3 imo, edging out the who by a hair. jagger is the best frontman of all time in my mind, although daltrey is great as well. keith richards is the quintessential rock guitarist, and his image and style cannot be overstated. however, i will say that whos next is better than any stones album, but still, the classic 4 of beggars banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers, and exile on main st are amazing as well.

i like the beatles but theyre overrated, their image was tame compared to the stones and who, and the stones and the who gave a much better live performance as well.

so with that said: stones>who>beatles

I'm gonna say The Who because they were one of the most energetic and most awesome bands of their time. Plus they were the first to destroy their own instruments.:D

Well, most of these are pretty subjective... for example, I think John is a better singer than Paul, and The Who are by far the best songwriters of the three. While The Beatles and Rolling Stones were writing cheesy love songs, the Who were working on full scale rock operas. Of course, the Beatles did grow out of it. And even though I love Lennon's writing, I really dislike McCartney's.

And I think Jagger is a better singer than you give him credit for. Besides, and band is more than a sum of it's parts.

I don't think The Who are that great in the songwriting department, though. I can never sit through Tommy because the lyrics are so stupid and random.

Try Quadrophenia. Infinitely better than Tommy, in my personal opinion.

From what I've heard, it's okay. But nothing can match the senselessness of Tommy.

Well, there are many ways to look at Tommy. But Quadrophenia is a much more serious album, and is by far Townshend's best writing.

You both realize that Pinball Wizard isn't meant to be serious, right? Think of it as the "comic relief" of an opera.

That comic relief comes in the form of Bell Boy on Quadrophenia.

No, I think the whole album's basic plot, and individual song lyrics are all pretty stupid.

The Who were better live than Led Zeppelin IMO let alone the Stones or the Beatles. The Stones were not known for writing cheesy love songs? The Beatles influenced everyone. In a 1967 interview Pete Townshend of the Who commented "I think "Eleanor Rigby" was a very important musical move forward. It certainly inspired me to write and listen to things in that vein". Of course "Eleanor Rigby" was written before the Who started writing Rock Operas. As for songwriters I don't think there is anyone who could match the Beatles for combining melody and strong chord progressions. I like the Stones more than the Who also.

I never really saw what was so great about Zeppelin live. Personally I think the Rolling Stones were better than Zeppelin live on average. Basically when Led Zeppelin were on form live (i.e Royal Albert Hall for those who own the led zeppelin dvd) they were amazing but when they were having a bad night it usually resulted in long, tedious sloppy solo's & bad vocals from Plant (especially post 73)
Bonham & JPJ were very reliable though.

I agree with what you're saying about Zeppelin, but in all honestly, The Stones are an absolutely horrible live band, and I say that as a huge Stones fan. Maybe back in the early 60's when they were playing old rhythm and blues songs and Brian Jones was still in the group (and somewhat conscious) they were alright, but once they hit the late 60s into the 70s they sounded like a bunch of amateurs.

That's exactly why they had to break up. Bonham and JPJ's bond basically saved almost every gig post 77 from Page's strung out wankery and Plant's incompetence. But you're right, most gigs beforehand were excellent.

This is a crazy comparison, they are all amazing bands who have influenced a great deal of other amazing bands.

As far as influence though, IMO it goes the Beatles and the Stones tied, with the Who slightly below them (I can not emphasize more on slightly. Keith Moon is one of the greatest drummers to ever grace this planet).

the kinks > all of the above
The Kinks had some great songs, but go out on a limb and call them above the likes of the Who, the Stones or the Beatles is crazy.

Those three bands did to music that a lot of other bands haven't even touched on. Their mark on history is gigantic. But, believe me, the Kinks are a great band. One of my favorite songs as of now is actually "Set Me Free".

Pretty much any band in the mod rock scene were. I don't hear much about the Zombies, the Turtles, the Hollies or the Animals as much as The Beatles either. It's lame; but that's how yuppies/classic rock hipsters have pegged the past.

Beatles>The Who>The Stones.

Beatles win always and forever for me. The Who are one of my favorite bands but haven't been as long as the Beatles have. And I never was all that into the Stones though I do love some of their songs (paint it Black=Most metal lyrics of their time).

For me, the Stones barely edge out the others. I'd say all three would fall into my top 5 bands, and I'll admit The Who and The Beatles were both much more innovative, but I think the Stones beat them both in rockaliciousness.

The 60s Stones albums with Brian Jones topped anything The Who or The Beatles did, personally.
