the wife loves the game, can't play an instrument over Medium, but can sing well up to Hard. So what do you do when Band World Tour says you need more fans and you need to move up a difficulty level?
Twist tie, light fixture...hang the mic. Let the wife turn into a groupie and cheer you on. Set the levels to Expert, and your job is do the rest.
It was mentioned in a tutorial or two, and maybe in a tip, and here's what I've learned:
singing while playing is FUN as hell, but it's also sorta tough on songs you're not all that familiar with.
I gotta get some local friends who are better at this game!

You tell her to get her big ass back in the kitchen!! :D
Totally joking!
You know, you can hook a headset up to the guitar. It keeps you from having to hit your head on the mic during cowbell parts.

You can afford a TV that big but not a $12 mic stand?
Nice jury-rigged solution though. :D

The extents people will go through in order to not purchase a mic stand from their local music store boggles me.

Yea, it's a lot easier to just use a wireless 360 headset than have to worry getting hit in the face with a mic.
My wife is trying to learn the drums but she hasn't tried the singing part yet even though she loves to sing karaoke and in the car.

lol, i've noticed that if you make a "click" sound with your tongue on the cowbell/tambourine percussion parts, the game counts it. It's sorta hard to do on some songs though, lol.
oh, and my headset broke a while ago, and the plantronics replacement i got seems to have a really crappy mic. has anyone tried one of the wireless headsets to see if that works?

lol, it's not that i don't want a mic stand, it's that i don't want to drive around finding one when i could be jammin out! I'll pick one up some day soon when I'm out and about, I'm sure.

You can just say "pow" into the microphone. It will count that as you striking it.

I'm sure if your wife can sing up to hard she can do expert with a little bit of practice. I didn't feel a lot of difference between hard and expert. I've gone through that myself and I'm in no way a good singer in person.
Also I'm doing that right now at work. I picked all the rock band songs at finetunes.com and just play it in the background. An excellent way to familiarize myself with all the songs.

Not to mention the AppleTV that's directly below the tv? lol
Nah, seriously though, good impromptu situation, it'll do until you get a boom mic stand.

Yes, the wireless set works just fine. I've already used it several times. As far as the percussion goes, yes you can make a noise to make it work but it's unneccesary and doesn't hurt your score in any way if you choose to just skip it.

RadioShack sells mic stands. They're like $30 though. And the gooseneck or clip is separate so don't forget to pick that up too.

thx, I'll make sure I have everything I need before I leave the store then. Yeah, online band play sure would have been handy. I've been skulking the LFB thread for a couple of days but haven't seen any body local to me (Twin Cities, MN). I'm just gonna have to make all my friends that have and/or play Rock Band practice more!

I think I could try that mic cord over the light fixture trick, except I have a ceiling fan in my tv room, it would work until someone accidentally hits the fan swtich!!:D I guess I'll buy a mic stand instead, it's safer! :p

Well...let's see, just how long have we had this game...A WEEK!?! Perhaps A week and a day? Just like in real life rock bands...it's a journey. If she's willing to put in the time, then training mode is a must, yes I understand that many of the songs may not be suitable in her comfortable and 'current' range BUT that's why we can put in have the chance of practicing and getting better.
Yes, from me it's been VERY humbling having to pull back to 70% speed in learning "Black Hole Sun" but incrementally, I have the confidence that I not only knowing the song inside and out but also getting better as a drummer...not just a Rock Band drummer.
Encouraging her to practice is something I advise. I have a wife too and she's now got that competitive fire in her after hearing some 'not so good' YouTubes out there.... perhaps that's the key? Thinking "I can do better than that..."

So does Best Buy, for some reason. When I was at my local one they had a mic stand with boom attachment for $30 or so. You'll want that attachment if you plan to sing and play an instrument, otherwise you'll be banging into the mic stand the whole time.

You can do that, but I find it's super tough to maintain a solo while "pow"ing into the mic. It doesn't count against you if you miss them, but will give you a bonus if you hit them. I've started to ignore them for now until I get better.

I get a mental image of myself standing there, playing Don't fear the reaper saying "pow! pow! pow! pow!" into the mic for the cowbell

Awesome fix! Have you given it a whirl with her signing on Expert? She may be able to swing it.
I'm lucky enough to have a wife that can hang in there on Expert on Bass. We're just trying to barrel through to get the 1Million fans achievement, then we're going to settle it back down to whatever we want. We've made it to 916K so far!
Good luck!

hah! no, she's pretty good, being that she doesn't really play any video games that were released after Tetris, lol. She can swing expert on a few songs that she knows extremely well, but she's not particularly keen about singing those 2-3 songs over and over again!
I'm up to about 730k fans, I don't know that I'll be able to hit 1m. God I hate that Aerosmith song. Trying to sing that while playing is gonna kill me. Maybe I'll lose enough fans that I can play with my friends again! :p

Dude, you are in a league that I will likely never approach. Hey, send your wife to me, I will gladly play with her.
Hmmm, that does not really sound right does it :-)
