Or do they just leave your packages there and not need a signature?
I missed a package from FedEx today because I was at work and couldn't sign for it. I'll be danged if I'm gonna let that happen with my new guitar.

ups is super careless, every time i get a package from them they ring the doorbell throw it on my doorstep and run back to their truck and take off, doesn't matter how expensive the item is they do it every time.

It depends on if you have already signed that waiver with UPS to allow them to just drop off packages.

I had to sign for my xbox when it got fixed, but I doubt you'll have to sign for your guitar/drum pedal

depends on several things.
If the sender requests signature, then it must be signed for.
If the item is alcohol, it must be signed for.
If the UPS guy feels like making you sign for it, it must be signed for.
Usually, if you are not home, and they attempt delivery, they will leave a note that you can sign a spot on and tell them where to leave the package.
This is why I have all my stuff shipped to work, that way I know someone will always sign for it.

If you live in a smaller town, you can leave a note on your door and they might leave the package. It works all the time for me with UPS.

Some packages need to be signed for in person at the request of the shipper. If that's not the case, you can usually just leave a note on the door that states "I release packages for delivery on my porch without a signature." then sign and print your name at the bottom.
This works for me with UPS, FedEx, and DHL. The *only* time I've had an issue was with my 360 console replacement. I had to drive over to my local UPS warehouse and sign for it in person.
