The worst covers ever have come from metal/hard rock bands.
I'll name a few examples
Marilyn Manson - Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode)
Marilyn Manson - Five to One (The Doors)
Dream Theater - Highway Star (Deep Purple)
Dream Theater - The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden)
Dream Theater - Darkside of the Moon full album
Metallica - Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits)
Metallica - Shoot out the lights (Diamond Head)
Lacuna Coil - Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode)
Nightwish - The Phantom of the Opera (Lloyd Webber)
Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust (Joan Baez)

Here are some good covers of non metal songs by Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands:
Young Man Blues & Shakin' All Over - The Who
Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer
Most Led Zeppelin songs
Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Theres probably much more I can't think of.

I only loathe note for note covers; I don't care who is doing them. I want the band to cover a song in their style, not the original artist. Be creative.
For example; what Nevermore did to the Sound of Silence, that's a good cover.

QFT. About the philosophy at least (haven't heard Nevermore's cover).
I enjoyed System of a Down's cover of Snowblind because they actually made it sound like a System song.
As far as the OP goes, argue all you want about which acts are metal, which ones aren't, but putting Maiden in the list automatically makes the rest invalid.
EDIT: Worth mentioning to Gowie, I got an awesome Sonic shirt yesterday that reminds me of your avatars so bad XD

If by heavy metal you mean speed, thrash, power, black, death, and every other splinter group that didnt form until the 80's. Black Sabbath had released songs like Hand of Doom and Iron Man in 1970, which cannot be denied are anything less than pure heavy metal. The Scorpions already had half a dozen albums out. Motorhead bought the punk, Priest brought the speed, and Blue Cheer brought the amplification in the 1970's.
Reminds me of the arguments on metal newsgroups in the late 90's on if Venom was Black Metal or not, if Carcass was death metal or grindcore, and if Dio was considered power metal.

The Scorpions were progressive rock for their first two or three albums; and were 70s hard rock until a breakthrough pace in around 1978. Black Sabbath was one unique band that would pioneer heavy & doom so much in the future; I wouldn't deny they were metal, but using them in the discussion is really not well placed. Blue Cheer's innovative and concise albums were in 1968 and helped define hard rock (and influence metal; but more hard rock, this cannot be argued).
Heavy Metal (as in traditional. You know the sound Axel Rudi Pell, Warlock, Iron maiden, etc. all mainlined?) wasn't a developed and specific sound until around 1979-1984. Deep Purple was not different than any of the hard rock bands of the late 60s or early 70s (some albums bordered on the proto-metal take like Stormbringer).

There is a reason that Iron Maiden is considered New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and not just First Wave or whichever. Again, Id say Warlock and Steeler are just as much hard rock as Deep Purple.
1) Do you consider the hair bands metal?
2) What do you use to differentiate hard rock from heavy metal.

Warlock was just as heavy metal as Maiden were; but even as such early metal was a hard rock subgenre and it didn't become it's own for a good while.

We'll just have to disagree then. I agree that there's a large gap between hard rock and thrash metal, yes but mostly because hard rock has more blues and thrash metal has more punk in the mix. Overall though, I still stand that heavy metal was alive in the 70s and that Deep Purple is a heavy metal band.

I've heard a lot of the albums on that list, actually. Some of those I own on vinyl but just haven't listened to.
The one that bugged me was Symphony X's Paradise Lost. I think I remember hearing or seeing somewhere that the album isn't in fact a concept album.
But all in all I love the list. It has A Pleasant Shade of Grey on it so it wins, that's my favourite Fates Warning album.
I was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Fates Warning fan about two years ago.

When did this post became a "shot your flames at the guy above" thread.
1) Deep Purple was considered as Hard Rock not Metal as was Black Sabbath IN THE BEGINNING of their careers.
2) Music is a matter of tastes, but what started all this thread is that people attacked Coldplay over the supposedly Satriani's song yet they defend metal bands butchering great songs claiming that they're better than the original version because, honestly, Metal bands have always considered themselves to be above every genre and made their fans believe that Which is a lot of crap. So is itright that a metal band cover (and in most cases) ruin a non metal song song but it's not right the other way around?
Secondly just because and good comedian but a joke of a musician (Jack Black) favorite genre is Metal, and made that horrible song (The Metal) where in the video the metal genre appears "beating" other genres doesn't mean is the truth.
If anything Metal is music for people who either:
a) Like really noisy music.
b) Haven't discovered any other genre yet.

What?! Like really noisy music? Yeah, sure I guess. Discovered any other genre. Rock En Espanol and Blues happens to be up my alley, but apparenlty I haven't discovered it yet. As far as a metal band butchering a song, maybe, but isn't the case with every metal band covering a classic tune. Listen to Skid Row's Little Wing and it's a pretty faithful rendition. And I can't believe you're taking the Tenacious D video seriously.

.
Obviously. The "metal" tag had yet to be established. Black Sabbath are pioneers of metal.

You seem to be mixing up covering a song, and "stealing" a song. Whether or not Coldplay stole Satriani's melody is debatable, but they definitely did not cover it.
And I love your sterotype of metal artists and fans.
Secondly just because and good comedian but a joke of a musician (Jack Black) favorite genre is Metal, and made that horrible song (The Metal) where in the video the metal genre appears "beating" other genres doesn't mean is the truth.

... That song is a joke. I also fail to see how this backs up anything. AC/DC must suck because Richard Ramirez likes them. The Beatles must suck because Charlie Manson liked them. Rhythm games must suck because the Jonas Brothers like them. See where I'm going with this?
If anything Metal is music for people who either:
a) Like really noisy music.
b) Haven't discovered any other genre yet.
This is where you lose all credibility. Noise is very different from Metal. You talk about how they have not "discover many other genre yet", yet you falsely accuse all metal bands of falling into a genre they don't belong in.
http://www.last.fm/tag/noise
And did it ever occur to you that, just maybe, you haven't looked deep enough into metal to make a valid judgment? That some may like it for it's complexity? That you're being completely unfair with your sterotypes?

A lot of ignorance here. First off, the point of "The Metal" isn't that Metal is a better genre, simply that it has outlasted many other genres of music while critics continued to say it was dying. Secondly, it's only noise if you really aren't paying attention, there's a difference between noise and dissonance, especially dissonance in how it's used in heavy metal. Furthermore, I've never met anyone who listens to exclusively metal.

At the moment you change a song from one genre to another (i.e a Country song to Metal) you're inmediately butchering it, hence ruining it. If a pop artist covers a pop song, mostly it does respect the original idea and adds a few things. Still is the same song (Natalie Imbruglia's Torn for example)
Metal groups most of the time doesn't respect the original idea and in their struggle to show that they are 'better than the original' they end ruining the song.
Some examples of the above are Lacuna Coil's Enjoy the Silence, Metallica's Brothers in Arms & Dream Theater's Highway Star.

I don't particularly like metal either, and I'm not hunted by dogs. It's because your reasoning is flawed. If a band changes the genre of the song, it does not always ruin it. There are plenty of covers that I would rather listen to than the original. It depends on the arrangement and the musicianship.

Listen to Faith No More's cover of Easy. While I won't go so far as to call them a metal band, they've got a lot of metal in their sound, but that cover was 100% spot on of the original, and quite freaking awesome (then again, FnM always does great covers). In non-metal news, Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal was an rad-ass cover of a rad-ass song.
Some examples of the above are Lacuna Coil's Enjoy the Silence, Metallica's Brothers in Arms & Dream Theater's Highway Star.
I agree with those. :) Throw in pretty much all of Metallica's Garage Inc comp, especially the irish traditional song. First time I heard it, I cried green tears into my guinness and stuck a shillelagh in my ear. Pog mo thoin, James Hetfield.
