I was linked to a pretty cool site a ways back that had tons of Metal albums that various bands were offering on their websites for free. It was basically a blog that keeps track of such bands. I've found a good chunk of cool stuff from this site, most notably one of my favourite Progressive Metal bands of the moment, Mindflow.

Here (http://freemetalalbums.wordpress.com/) is the link to the blog, note that all these albums are free from the band's websites, this is just a site that connects 'em all together.

And while I'm here, I figured I'd make a little discussion. What do you think about bands that offer their material on their websites for free? Someone in another forum made the statement that bands with material available for free are bands that aren't going to amount to anything in the long run. Any opinions on that statement?

Such as Nine Inch Nails or Radiohead... Wait...

Anyway, I'm all for bands putting an album out for free. It's a great way to connect with the new generation of music listeners, and just generally get people into your sound. If they dig it, there's a good chance they'll pick up your other albums.

Sylvain Begot of the French Doom Metal band Monolithe had problems releasing the EP Interlude Premier: Monolithic Pillars so they released it online for free, and gave the opportunity for listeners who liked the material to donate to support the artist.

Another band that does that, that I've seen, is Epiclore, whose material is all available for torrent on their official website (also on this blog somewhere).

Outside of my material (which most of it is on last.fm undownloadable so I can profit off radio listens; but still free) I know a few artists. Who knows.

Maat Mons (www.last.fm/music/Maat Mons) - Experimental stuff.
Piff Pond (www.last.fm/music/Piff Pond) - Rock stuff.
Quarry Eyes (www.last.fm/music/Quarry Eyes) - Ambient/Experimental stuff.
Uncle Grapefruit (www.last.fm/music/Uncle Grapefruit) - Avant-Garde stuff.
White Guys Jumping (www.last.fm/music/White Guys Jumping) - Folky Pop stuff.

All people I know via another forum; hell I've collab'd with some of them. Tim (Maat Mons) helps me with Bloodhail (www.last.fm/music/Bloodhail) and Jesse (Piff Pond) is my new bassist for TCNE (www.last.fm/music/The Chuck Norris Experience).

:)

On that note; under my name (www.last.fm/music/Michael Gowienczyk) I released a piano improv album and I also started up my newest endeavor Stilt Village (http://www.last.fm/music/Stilt+Village) tonight. Listen if you care to.

Quoted from another thread in this forum; somewat on topic with the subject of free music.
