these change by the hour it seems, but here's a few that immediately came to mind tonight...
please note that i can't help but associate the performance of lyrics. my sense of poetry is directly tied to the poet.

neil young - out on the weekend
"See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say."

xiu xiu - nieces pieces
"I can't wait till you realize mommy's heart is broken
I can't wait to watch you grow up around the people who broke it"

andrew wk - totally stupid
"When we look into the future
To the place we haven't gone
See what we haven't done
We have known it all along
If we wait until tomorrow
Will tomorrow ever come?
This is where we're coming from
And we're not the only ones"

I need to check out Success Story, the bass line is played on 8 string Rickenbacker, something I definitely need to hear. I'll post some of my favorite tomorrow afternoon.

Mountain Goats - Fall of the Star High School Running Back
Selling acid was a bad idea,
And selling it to a cop was a worse one.
A new law said that seventeen year olds could do federal time,
You were the first one.

Apparently we're the only two people on the forum that listen to them, so I couldn't help but notice the lack of Mountain Goats on your setlist

My current favorite at the moment:

penetrates your thigh

Okay, this is the last one from me by the Mountain Goats, because you could fill a whole thread with great John Darnielle lyrics.

The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton
When you punish a person for dreaming his dreams,
Don't expect him to thank or forgive you,
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
Will in time both out pace and outlive you
Hail Satan!

Just had to post that one :D

This is one of my favourite lines. It somehow attached itself to me when I was younger.

Sport the war, war support
The sport is total war
When victory's a massacre
When victory is survival
When this end is a slaughter
The final swing is not a drill
It's how many people I can kill

Because he was human
Because he had goodness
Because he was moral
They called him insane
Delusions of grandeur
Visions of splendor
A manic depressive
He walks in the rain

Rush-Cinderella Man

And you and I climb over the sea to the valley,
And you and I reached out for reasons to call.

Yes-And You and I

Insecurity is merely your fear
Of maybe the outside
Hearing what you hear
Don't let 'em see,
Can't let 'em hear

Atheist-Brains

The rain is here and you, my dear,
Are still my friend
It's true the two of us are back as one again

Foo Fighters-Up in Arms

It's three o'clock in the morning
And I'm on the streets again
I disobeyed another warning
I should have been in by ten

Now I won't get out till Sunday
I'll have to say I stayed with friends
Oh But it's a habit worth forming
If it means to justify the end

'cause I'm dancing in the moonlight
It's caught me in its spotlight
It's alright, alright
Dancing in the moonlight
On this long hot summer night

Thin Lizzy-Dancing in the Moonlight(Phil Lynott for the win)!

It's overdue but at least I caught the thread this time. :o

FUX U BONO THIS IS A MUCH BETTER SONG ABOUT IRELAND/THE TROUBLES

The Cranberries
Zombie

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...

Catcher In The Rye - Guns N' Roses

When all is said and done
We're not the only ones
Who look at life this way
That's what the old folks say
But every time I see them
Makes me wish I had a gun
If I thought that I was crazy
Well I guess I'd have more fun
(Guess I'd have more fun)

Oooh, the Catcher In The Rye Again
Won't let ya get away from him
(Tomorrow never comes)
It's just another day...
Like today

You decide
Cause I don't have to
And then they'll find
And I won't ask you
At anytime
Or long hereafter
If the cold outside's
As I'm imagining
It to be
Oh, no

Lana nana na na na
Lana nana na nana

Ooh, the Catcher In The Rye Again
Won't let ya get away from him
(Tomorrow never comes)
It's just another day...
Like today

When all is said and done
We're not the only ones
Who look at life this way
That's what the young folks say
But every time I see them
Makes me wish I had a gun

If I thought that I was crazy
Well I guess I'd have more fun
(Guess I'd have more fun)
Cause what used to be's
Not there for me
And ought to for someone
That belongs...
Insane...
Like I do

Oh, no
Not at all

On an ordinary day
Not in an ordinary way
All at once the song I heard
No longer would it play
For anybody
Or anyone
That needed comfort from somebody
Needed comfort from someone
Who cared
To be
Not like you
And unlike me

And then the voices went away from me
Somehow you set the wheels in motion
That haunt our memories
You were the instrument
You were the one
How a body
Took the body
You gave that boy a gun

You took our innocence
Beyond our stares
Sometimes the only thing
We counted on
When no one else was there

I love the lyrics in this song, but my favorite lyrics in it are the ones I made red.

Pretty much the entire set of lyrics to "Everlong" by Foo Fighters. I love the lyrics in that song.

I'm also very partial to Iron & Wine's lyrics. Especially "Boy With a Coin" and "White Tooth Man"

A boy with a coin he found in the weeds
With bullets and pages of trade magazines
Close to a car that flipped on the turn
When God left the ground to circle the world

A girl with a bird she found in the snow
Then flew up her gown and that’s how she knows
If God made her eyes for crying at birth
Then left the ground to circle the earth

A boy with a coin he crammed in his jeans
Then making a wish he tossed in the sea
Walked to a town that all of us burn
When God left the ground to circle the world

Said the plain clothes cop to the beauty queen
“I’ve seen nothing but a spoke in a wheel”
So she gave up her crown to a kid with a crutch
And they both felt cheated after closing the deal
And the white tooth man, I ran with him
Got all cut up from pissing out in the weeds
And a fight upstate with a broken blade
And a wife whose finger never wanted a ring

Said the plain clothes cop to the Indian chief
“I’ve made nothing but an honest mistake”
The postman cried while reading the mail
And we all got trampled in the Christmas parade
And the white tooth man who sold me a gun
A map of Canaan and a government bond
Said, “I love this town, but it ain’t the same”
The ski mask ripped as he was putting it on

Said the plain clothes cop to the holy ghost
“I’ve heard nothing if it wasn’t the wind”
And we all got sick on a strip club meal
While the statehouse was frying all the witches again
So the white tooth man with his kids in the car
And a wad of money that was already spent
Said, “I love my dog but she just ran away
She’ll keep running like the world never ends”

Closing Time - Leonard Cohen

Yeah I missed you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
it's CLOSING TIME

Haven't heard that one yet, I don't think. Either that or I'm just not recognizing the name. *Skips off to go find lyrics*

Wow. Yeah, I agree with that XD It actually brought me to tears.

But Boy With a Coin and White Tooth Man are two of my favorite songs by him, so I will stick with those.

But hey. And since someone complained about it being about favorite lines versus, you know, entire songs, I'll post two lines now =p

Mother, remember the night
That the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor and the fleas on their paws
And you cried 'til the morning

And another one that's more funny than any good
