Amazing guitarist Pete Townshead is underrated he can stand up to any other guitarist in soloing but when it comes to rhythm no one makes it more exciting. almost invented punk and guitar smashing

for all around talent, i would go with The Mars Volta. a close second would be Between The Buried And Me, people rip on their singer because he screams, but he has a great range and alot of vocal variety if you take the time to listen to more than 1 of their songs.

Obviously this is my opinion, but I think that Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever.
John Bonham- Great drummer. Many think he is one of the best. He had great power and was an excellent writer on the drums.
Jimmy Page- Great Guitarist. Many think he is one of the best. Honestly he is a legend on the guitar.
Robert Plant- Great Vocalist. Many think he is one of the best. Also a great lyricist.
John Paul Jones- Great Bassist. Definately the most underrated member of Zeppelin. He was an amazing musician and could play many instruments. He is never given as much credit as he should be.
When you add these 4 amazing people together you get the best band ever. Every CD they put out was awesome. Every song on every cd was good at worst.

My mom was (still is, I imagine) in love with The Who. I never really appreciated them until this game. Playing the drum part on Hard or Expert, you'll see amazing talent in the note chart, even if you can't get through it. Unlike Dead on Arrival, the notes actually make a lot of sense in the context of the song :p
Honestly, I have a newfound respect for a lot of artists that I had either heard of but not cared for, or the ones that I just didn't even know existed. We've had (and still have) a lot of talent in the music world.
Doesn't matter who the greatest is as long as everyone strives to be the greatest. Then we all benefit.

Yeah, They're great and all, but definitely don't call anyone from Led Zeppelin underrated. Look at any list of greatest bassists ever, he's probably number 1 or number 2. Every song from Led Zeppelin, no matter how simplistic the bassline, has one of the greatest basslines ever, according to every bassist I've ever met.

Led Zepplin has The Who beat everywhere. John Bonham was a better drummer, not as crazy, but better, Jimmy Page was a better guitar player, John Paul Jones was a better bass player and Robert Plant was a better singer/front man.

I wouldn't really call TMV the best band ever, but they are a damn good one. They are probably the best band in the past decade, yet no one knows who they are. They pretty much kick the piss out of any other modern rock band today.
Omar is an amazing guitarist, he has one of the best and most unique styles ever played. Cedric is also one of the best lyricist ever.
I can't wait till their new album comes out in Jan.

Zappa would be hard to beat, he goes down as best musical composer in my book. I don't think we'll ever see compilations as impressive as those in "Hot Rats" ever again. He also wrote some very good stuff in Apostrophe.

I would say either the Grateful Dead or Cream
cant go wrong with jerry garcia's amazingly emotional guitar licks, phils lesh's unique style of bass, almost a secong lead guitar. Bob Weirs amazing ability to decipher the rhythm and cue jerry to solo. And not to mention Bill kreutzmann and Mickey Hart's drum playing ability and their incredible drum solos in between sets.
on the other hand Clapton is the god of all guitar players, save for BB King. and Jack Bruce brought the bass into center stage(one of the first to do so save for Paul McCartney). And Ginger Baker is just a truly amazing drummer. how these three guys made the sound they did in the late 60's is mind boggling.
just my 2 cents

Wow, that's funny you mentioned those two groups, cuz the Beatles are for sure my all-time favorite band and Muse is my favorite that exists right now. Good choices.

For me it's Led Zeppelin with Steely Dan pulling a close second. Both of these bands stir emotions in me like no other music really does or probably ever will.
Every Led Zeppelin or Steely Dan song reminds me of a distinct moment in my childhood, usually mornings waking up to my father rocking the house to tunes like Immigrant Song and Green Earings!

Gotta go with Queen for greatest band ever. Tossing in pretty much the last dead giveaway band...along with Queen, it's basically an FFA between the Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Pink Floyd...
But my favorite right now is probably Barenaked Ladies.

Well i'm gonna totally rock the boat, but i go with The Velvet Underground.
They have gone relatively unnoticed, but as Brian Eno said "not many people bought a velvet undergound album, but those who did started a band that would later be considered 'revolutionary". With songs like Heroin and Venus in Furs, no one at the time was touching topics like that with a 10 foot pole, yet somehow a lot of people would participate in them.
They revolutionized the way that modern rock would be made, produced and written. Their influence can be found in bands as early as David Bowie and the sex pistols and bands as recent as The Cold War Kids.

You, sir, are a god among men. Finally someone gets it. VU and Nico still blows me away, as it has every person I've ever given it to.
If anyone equals VU for me, it's Mission of Burma. Boston band, really indefinable in style but completely inimitable. Not great singers, but great songwriters for incredible pop tunes (That's When I Reach For My Revolver) and freakout post-punk (Max Ernst). They were incredibly talented, unconventional, and broke up with little notice back in 83. But they proved their worth when they reunited a few years ago- they're still going and as good as ever, even though they're all pushing 50. Take the best aspects of Sonic Youth, Pixies, Black Flag, Kinks, Pink Floyd, and Roxy Music, and there you have the best band to come out of Boston or the entire "re-united bands" catalog.

To this day you could rename that album ' the best of the velvet underground' and it would still work. The Velvet Underground and Nico was to their career what "Are you Experienced" was to Jimi Hendrix's, it definitely set the bar.

The Beatles, they brought bands like the rolling stones and the who too america and the McCartney/Lennon songwriting duo is the greatest, and probably will always be the greatest. All of their solo careers alone are hall of fame caliber, exepct maybe ringos.

It's debatable if super-groups are allowed to count in this sort of thing, but if they are in terms of skill of the musicians it's Cream hands down. No one else comes a little close. Sorry zep-heads, but clapton mops the floor with page with one hand, and except for vocals the other instruments shouldn't even be debated.

His work before Derek & the Dominoes - excellent. From Derek & the Dominoes forward - utter crap. Who writes 10 minute songs that have naught but a single 5 note riff? What a putz.

My first instinct was The Beatles or Led Zeppelin obviously out of habit. But I thought more and I knew VU was my number one. They pioneered the entire era of revolutionary music. I remember listening to Heroin for the first time and it just blew my ****ing mind. They remain underappreciated, but I guess it saves them from bastardization.

i'm sorry. none of these other bands can even be argued. None have been as influential to music as Zeppelin has been. none have such strong talented members. Zeppelin songs are timeless. Everything Zeppelin has done is amazing. Zeppelin is the perfect example of a Rock Band. Even to this day they still refuse to sell out, only reuniting for a charity event.
Zeppelin is hands down the greatest band of all time.

My point is that this is SOLELY based on opinion. I don't have a problem with people stating their opinion like a fact. I do have a problem, especially when it comes to music, with people stating that their opinion IS fact. I personally hate Zeppelin. I think they have five or six songs that I kind of like (I don't even consider Stairway a "great" song) and I think the rest is crap. The best example I can give is Black Dog. It's terrible. The guitar is just random flailing. Once again, that's opinion. I don't say "Led Zeppelin sucks. Anyone who likes them doesn't understand music, and their arguments against me don't matter." I personally think that I agree with The Velvet Underground. Go listen to The Velvet Underground & Nico thoroughly, and then tell me you disagree.

QFT. i've been called out time and time again for pushing my opinion on people, but i have never said "so and so is better than that band and there can be no argument. i am right".
as judged in popularity and influence, i could care less about the "greatest" band. but in musical talent, thats another story. bands like the human abstract, the mars volta, between the buried and me... all around very talented. i'll admit, if you want to argue, that THA's vocalist isn't the most amazing singer, but he is extremely knowledgeable on musical theory and has great composition skills.

I would say Rush, Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, or The Who.
You can't really state what band is the greatest ever because everyone has different taste. If you were going to say what band was the greatest you would almost have to say the Rolling Stones. Their music has lasted for decades and they still tour. Their manager announced for them as "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band on Earth" and this title has remained today.

It takes more effort to capitalize the start of every word than just typing out normal English. I don't care which band is the best, we should be tackling problems like this first.
Oh, and the obvious answer is Nickelback. They have such diversity and talent, and their songs really speak to me. Yes, I too want to "be a rock star." And their generic-grungy voice and booming falsetto have me at the edge of my seat every time I listen to the song - where will he go with his next pitch? Hands down, the best ever.

I'd have to go with Rev. Gary Davis. He was a solo player but he's one of the very few that I've heard make a guitar sound like a whole band... on top of doing special effects. Many of the prominent musicians of our time were his students at some point.
For a complete band I'll go with the Beatles.

To me, the best band ever is the King Crimson lineup that made Red in 1974. Robert Fripp on guitar, Bill Bruford on drums and John Wetton on bass and vocals. Aside from the throwaway live improv on the album, Red is perfection.

My god this topic is boring.
The Velvet Underground is easily up there, obviously for VU&N, but also for the fantastic 17 minute jam known as Sister Ray. Two chords never sounded so good and so interesting.
Also, I feel that the Smiths need a mention. Johnny Marr's guitar playing defined what it is to be a pop guitarist. He played and sounded like noone else. Morrissey's intelligent, witty, and often genius lyrics worked beautifully in chorus with his unholy ability to find catchy vocal melodies to sing over Marr's riffs. Andy Rourke is extremely underrated, both by the world and by the band itself. Mike Joyce was not a fantastic drummer whatsoever, but the music didn't call for a Neil Pert or a John Bonham. The band never released a mediocre album, and they reached masterpiece twice with Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder. Oh, the Smiths.
Also deserving of mention:
The Pixies
Pavement
The Beatles (duh)
Olivia Tremor Control
Os Mutantes
