Ok, so when I went to public school I played in the band. I play percussion and am pretty good all around. At the high school I ALWAYS got stuck with bells, triangle, marimba, etc. NEVER got to play snare or bass or anything. I was one of three female percussionists in 9-12th grade. I never complained, but I showed improvement and kept practicing and still NEVER got to play. Now that I am homeschooled I decided to join another band. I auditioned and made symphonic band(Which is REALLY good). I am the only female percussionist in symphonic band and once again I have gotten stuck with bells and timpani. Now, that isn't what bothers me. What bothered me was when I was at rehearsal today. This man took all of the percussionists out to practice. I was( of course) playing bells while the guys were playing cymbals, bass, snare, and tom toms. The worst part is that the guy teaching IGNORED me. He wouldn't even tell me where we were starting on the music, so I had to just stand there like an idiot. What should I do?

I wanted to, but I don't want to have to put up with him holding that against me later on.

It honestly could be that you're not that good on percussion (no, you don't need much talent to play the bells and timpani in a symphonic band), and since the bells aren't that important of an instrument-- save certain parts during certain songs-- the teacher may have been busy and not have noticed you. They do that sometimes.
I would say to just wait for the next session, and if you're still being ignored, then actually talk to the teacher about it before or after class. If he ignores you even then or blows you off, then take it up with the school's administration. On the contrary, if things improve, then you may want to mention to him and your bandmates that you want to trade-off instruments.
By the way, you should have complained about not being able to play the other percussion instruments back when you weren't being home-schooled. Otherwise, nobody would have know that you had a problem with it.

No Prob!
Just don't be mean with him. Try and be a little assertive though. Ask why you can't play drums with the others. And if he says you suck at it or something, just show him your awesome drum skills!

Haha I plan on it..I made third chair. I think what the problem is is that they know im from Science Hill which has the best band around here and so they expecdt a LOT more oput of me then the other kids, cause I can tell you right now that I am a lot better then all of the other kids(except for the section leader). Its the same thing that happened with softball, but I won't get into that :D

Im not a very assertive person especially since im the ONLY new kid in the band. But thanks meatwad..if that doesn't work ill flirt with him :D

Haha I plan on it..I made third chair.I always hated the chair system in highschool bands... Yay for encouraging rich kids to be selfish.
Luckily, my school didn't support that sort of system. We were allowed to just choose what parts we wanted to play between each other, and it worked out really well.

Go talk to your teacher after class and explain it rationally. Don't get mad and leave or anything, just explain how you feel and what you would like to happen.

Arrange for a Rock Band contest in your School's auditorium, find a couple good guitarists and a singer and rock Expert drums in front of the whole school and show them what you're really made of.

Yeah we don't really have that system here, the parts are assigned based off how good we are as individual players.
Anyway, that sucks to hear erin, hopefully you can get an answer from him.

i have not looked at anyone elses responses yet but here is my suggestion:
challenge for 1st 2nd or whatever chair. and make sure that you ask to challenge in front of the entire class so that everyone knows you did it.
just make sure you will do well enough.
but, keep this in mind.. band directors dont often get percussionists that can actually read music well enough to play bells/marimbas/xylophones ect... which means that when you always get stuck doing those parts, its because you are the only one that can do it... not because they dont value what you can do... im not sure if thats the case here, but its often true (and it was true for me when i was in high school... i was the only one in the percussion section that could actually read music)
/edit/
and after reading everything else, i want to add that most band directors in general suck at saying either "thank you" or "you are doing these because of X reasons"... they usually just say "here's your part" and leave it at that...

Have a good talk is what you need. If one doesn't do it talk more. And if they doesn't cut it then you're pretty much out of luck from my standpoint lol

Reminds me of my Physics teacher last year. Would always pick on the guys and yell at them. While the girls would get "good job!" and "Nice work!" She would yell at the guys for texting while the girl next to him texted all the time and never got caught. And on top of that, she was a terrible teacher.

lol, I play with a normal chair. Even though a "rock throne" is convenient, I miss having something to support my back. I always feel like i'm falling when i'm playing RB at school.

Smash a snare, skin first, over his head then hit it with a mallet.

That's extremely sexist. I'm a cellist and it would make me sooo angry if I was looked down on for being a girl. In the orchestra I'm in, we once had a girl on the set while the guys played timpani and triangle. She was obviously better than them. If it ever happens again, just remind yourself that you're better than that. :D

Well, I've been a percussionist in various bands for about 10 years, and let me tell you, playing marimba or bells, or any mallet instrument, is a lot more fun than playing snare, in my opinion. Of course it depends on the piece, but in general, I'd say you got lucky and they're the suckers.

the only decent bass drum player at our school was a chubby black girl...
the other two were brainless oafs whose poor sense of rhythm was only trumped by their horrid excuse for marching.
luckily, our snare drummers were good and i was god of the quads! :)
