Do you mean "vote early and vote often?" No, you can only vote once per day (i.e., per position).
And I can't believe this hasn't devolved into a Peart vs. Bonham pissing contest yet....:p

On these list things I've noticed it's just better to agree on a choice with someone then put out; as your favorites never seem to come out on top (unless there happens to be hype or whatever).

Yeah. I was kind of hoping a drummer I'm not all that familiar with, or at least a quirky left-field choice, would win. Neil is a talented drummer and all, but it's redudant to include him in things like these.

Well I was gonna vote for Neil, but since I picked Alex for guitar and I don't want to look like TOO much of a fanboy, I'm gonna go for Bill Bruford. I'm shocked he hasn't been mentioned yet. Also how the hell did Zappa win frontman? Brilliant musician though he may be, he can't sing worth a damn.

Mostly the frontman part. And I like his voice, even if he isn't some profoundly skilled vocalist.

I don't know. I mean, guitarist I can see. Songwriter I can see. But as the lead singer of a rock supergroup? I just have a hard time thinking anyone can honestly enjoy his vocals that much.
Plus I hate that Meltdown bull**** that he seems to love so much. Case in point: Dangerous Kitchen.

I dunno...I can see Zappa in the frontman position pretty well. EVERYONE idolized him, and he was sort of the granddaddy (or at least the weird uncle) of everything that was rebellious in rock. Frank always did his own thing, but I seriously believe if he was alive today and decided to start up a new band, you'd have everyone from Dave Grohl to Perry Farrell to Tom Morello to --- hey, John Petrucci gladly auditioning to get in.
Zappa was an innovator...THE innovator. He was doing things to guitars before Morello and Cliff Burton were even born. I see him as a great leader.

i thought the idea at this point was to simply pick a favorite musician and then see how it works out in the end, possibly trying to fuse all the random members together with a songwriter whom we feel could take advantage of the band.
i have my doubts of the conclusion the poll will meet too, but it's not a bad idea.

I picked Marco because he can vary in several styles; if I recall he's done a jazz record, a metal record and a rock record all in his career so far. So he could work well with Zappa at the helm (or whoever the songwriting staff is).

i'm trying to ignore any notion of working with others for now, hence my chippendale, ranaldo, and darnielle picks. :)

All of this is true, but....he can't sing.
I mean if you're just picking him for charisma or whatever then cool, but I just kind of figured it was more important to have someone who can actually sing as the lead singer.
He may still get my vote for songwriter though.
Hungryfreak
01-24-2009, 03:37 PM
It said under singer that he would also be the frontman and, as a frontman, Zappa is unmatched in coordinating anyone and making them work well. As I said in the first thread, so long as Zappa's the frontman, anyone can come after him and he would still make it work.
Also, for songwriter, do you think we should only vote for members of the band? Would be weird to have a songwriter outside of the band.
thedoorsdk
01-24-2009, 04:54 PM
There are certainly precedents for songwriters who don't actively participate in the bands they write for, particularly in lyrics. Pete Brown used to write most of Cream's lyrics, and Peter Sinfield was the lyricist for part of King Crimson's career.
I would honestly be surprised if Zappa didn't get chosen for songwriting as well, though.

Lyrics, yes. Other parts of the songwriting process? I don't think so, unless you count stealing riffs.

Yeah I definitely can't think of one off the top of my head, at least not with a stable band line-up.
