View Full Version : Anybody else find their playing improved?

I've played a lot of GH II and III, but never got past hard difficulty. I dabbled in expert a bit, but could never beat hard. When I got this game, I played through hard and only started struggling on the last set, but overcame it shortly. I moved on to expert and I'm on the last set again in the solo tour. I thought it was just because this game is easier.
I went back to GHIII earlier just for the hell of it, and went to play that brick wall in hard mode called 3's and 7's. First thing I noticed was my calibration is way off on my TV. Next thing I noticed was that it wasn't that hard of a song. I beat it, and did the encore, Cult of Personality, and tore up the solo that I could never nail before and five starred it, thus restoring honor to my house.
Just wondered if Rock Band somehow magically improved anybody else's playing?

That's funny, I thought No One Knows (also by QOTSA) was a brick wall back in the GH1 day.

My GHIII wall was Slayer's Raining Blood which prevented me from playing Lou on DWDtG which prevented me from playing Thunder-whatzit or something.
I imagine if I went back I'd have to use the Les Paul again which would mean readjusting back to the strum on that just after I'm getting comfy with the Stratocaster's (still haven't got double strumming down on the Strat).

That Slayer song took forever for me to beat on Hard. Still can't seem to beat Lou though

For me, the Rock Band guitar is a lot more comfortable to play (or it was before it broke), and I felt like I was clicking in this game with stuff more complex than the things I was beating in GH3.

I'm still getting used to the Fender, but I played the hell out of GHIII on Medium and it was tough (yeah, I'm not the best player). But I noticed that in RB the Medium difficulty was kind of... easy. So I'm playing on Hard now with little problems so far. I've tried Hard in GHIII and I failed within 30 seconds. I don't think my skill's improved, really, but the Medium level in RB is too easy.

All the difficulties, except maybe expert are easier in Rock Band. Of course, the calibration settings in Rock Band are dead on for my TV, and once you get used to it, the notes are a lot easier to read. That also has an impact on difficulty.
I also noticed it's easier to do more complex solos and rhythms in Rock Band, even though I think the window to hit the notes is larger in Guitar Hero III.

The one thing I have noticed is that Rock Band is pickier than GH2, and WAY pickier than GH3, about hammer-on timing. I mean, in GH3, you can get away with almost anything: you can have a G-O-R-B hammer-on string, and play like G-(Y)-O-(Y)-R-(Y)-B, and it will still count.
Because Rock Band forces you to have correct timing and generally perfect fingering (no "extra" notes), I think overall my solos & trickier patterns have improved since I started playing it.

Forgot to add one thing: I just don't get the RB guitar. I must not understand it or something, I'm just way, way, way better with the GH guitars. In fact, the guitar I prefer the most is the Xplorer from GH2 - ugly as sin, but it works great for me.

I hate the strat, I can't play with it for crap. luckily I've just been sticking to the drums, love them. Xplorer is too small for me. I'm 5'10" and 250 lbs., it feels like a ukulele in my hands. Thought uncomfortable, I didn't have much issue with it the one or two times I used it.

Well, part of my issue with GH3 is being on a PS3. I really have never felt like I got the thing calibrated correctly in three weeks of playing it.
I opened up Rock Band, picked my TV-type and BAM, everything was calibrated.

Yeah, that's why I didn't want to say "all difficulties are easier", because I've watched people playing on Expert and I'm saying to myself "That looks so freakin hard".

My friend has GH3 on PS3 aswell and i hate playing it because the calibration is always off, but he's usto it and doesn't set it up. I tried calibrating it once and it ended with 30ms, on a CRT tv! I'm thinking the wireless guitar's the problem.

I just can't get used to the Strat above medium. My fingering seems off, the strumming seems off, can't seem to alt strum right. When I use my Les Paul, I kick ass on hard and expert.

I use Vic 5A nylon tips. Friends, kids, and relatives can use the RB ones.
