Metallica is releasing a single from the new album, and we are the first to get it, see it, smell it, hear it, play it!

Uggh...how did I know. Get over it. It is no longer "kewl" to discuss "old Metallica, new Metallica".
They've done a few things some disagree with..(including myself}. But they've done many that I love and have been listening to for 20 yrs.
If you don't like it, don't download it.

If we have to pay for it, count me out. I'll stick with their good songs, thank you.

I understand where you're coming from.. but for many people (myself included) metallica hasn't sounded good since after ...and justice for all. (i can deal with some "black", but anything else.. no thakns.)
i know they're trying to go more old school with their new stuff... basically, i'll believe when i hear it.

Let's try to reserve judgment until it's available shall we? Just do what i do for all DLC, listen/watch it on youtube before buying it.

i agree, and yes they havent been that great since after justice for all, but theyve had some great songs since then like i disappear, and some of the black album stuff... you just have to appreciate the music and not compare it to their older things, unlike some bands, some bands change... and you know ive read alot of things about the new album being a "Master of Puppets 2" type deal and i really hope so, the producer Rick Rubin isnt like bob rock where they just go in and jam out and he was the "father figure". Rick rubin is more strict on what he wants and when he wants it...and he (or so i read) is doing things strictly, metallica needs to come up with material sounding as of a "master of puppets 2" type song, and once they have all their material and he and the rest of the band agrees its great... then they record it... Also, it is definitely not another St. Anger Encore.... there are Solos and its back to regular tuning, not crappy ass NU metal D tune

Hopefully they'll release more classic Metallica tracks alongside this one, I'd kill a hundred orphans to play Master of Puppets in Rock Band.

i'd hate to see what you would do if it were the whole album as DLC.

That is really cool, hopefully it is the first of many bands to do this. Rock Band could be looked at as a whole new platform for releasing music and getting your music out there. I wouldn't mind seeing lots of bands release their new singles as DLC, I think that would be awesome.

I just got the live from the Bridge School Benefit concert today from http://www.metallicalive.com to see if I had reason to hope that we'd see hear something awesome with this new exclusive.. and I think we will.
It's a little on the pricey side to me, $10 for 8 songs - about an hour of MP3-quality music, but the mixing is awesome, and it looks like a good chance for a "Black Album" or maybe "Load" quality album. Won't thrash as much, but could definitely rock.
I'll keep a level of optimism that they learned they lessons from the late 90's, and will come back out better for the experience. I read that James went through rehab right before St Anger, so maybe it affected them more than they realized.

Here's why.
http://www.digitalbattle.com/2007/11/13/guitar-hero-iii-rockets-dragonforce-sales/ (they list HMX as making GH3 though..)
Dragonforce sales up 183% after being in GHIII.
I'm kinda with KaYotiX on the albums. I just couldn't take St. Anger's drum sound. Sounded like Lars turned in his drums for T-Fal pots and wooden spoons. Every song had it too, PONK-PONK-PONK.. Just freaking horrible.:(

I don't see how this isn't awesome news?
It's great publicity for the game, and from what i've heard of their newer songs it should be quite awesome.

I held my breath when St. Anger was supposed to be so much better than load of s*** and reload of s***. Rubin seems to be able to work miracles, i just hope he can pollish this turd back to anything close to the luster it used to be. From the sounds though, they are heading in the right direction.
Dump Rock...check.
More solos/better guitar work....check

I honestly don't get why people hate St Anger so much. Somebody please explain it to me. I had never heard any of the music off of it, when it came out. I heard how bad it was, so I listened to a few tracks. I thought they were pretty decent. I mean, I wouldn't go out and buy the album, but I feel it got a large amount of unjust criticism

Great to hear they are ditching Bob Rock. He was making them worse and worse as time went on. Lars got on this "let's evolve" trip and Bob Rock just fed into him to stay with the band. They were built on doing things others weren't and then all of a sudden bob rock got on board and they were trying to sound more contemporary? (Contemperary being a relative term of course.)
I know Rick Ruben is huge as producers go because he's one of the few whose name I've actually heard before. I'm not and afficianado. what else has he produced?

The problem is that it was compared to 3 major albums - Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, and Metallica (the black album). All three were excellent, and while St. Anger wasn't "bad", it lacked the shine that those three had. They will forever be compared to their best, until they surpass them with another blockbuster album. St. Anger could have been 100 times better with a better mastering and mixing of the tracks.

The problem that I've heard with James Hettfield is that the years of screaming out lyrics as a youth has done major strain damage to his vocal chords. He has a wonderful voice, and it showed in the tracks laid down for the "Black" album. If he can recapture that level of voice quality, clarity and emotion.. they'll continue to go far. What I heard on that live recording I mentioned earlier is that he's not trying to scream and shout, so the vocals should be much better than St. Anger. On that disc he really does sound like he's straining to belt the lyrics out like he used to during the "Ride the Lightning" days.

Recently he has produced the latest Linkin Park, Coheed and Cambria, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Dixie Chicks. He was also one of the original founders of Def Jam along with Russell Simmons. He "discovered" the Beastie Boys and Run DMC.

I'm guessing you either were not a fan of Metallica before the "black" album or prefer to listen to music recorded in a steel drum. There are a lot of complaints people can make about St. Anger but the real biggie has to be that it just doesn't sound good. An album doesn't need to be produced to the level of Echolyn (sorry about the obscure reference but it's the highest level of production I could think of off the top of my head) but some production would have been nice. Heck St. Anger sounds like it was engineered and produced in a way to make it sound worse than mic recordings in my basement. Seriously there are Bootlegs with better sound quality.

I think this is cool opportunity for RB if it happens. Great publicity and promotion and shows that well into 2008 we will still have new DLC to look forward to. Now as far as Metallica is concerned, after Puppets - it was all down hill for me. Garage Days was fun for what it was and Justice had it's moments but paled in comparison to their earlier stuff. The Black album was like a different band altogther and signaled the begininng of the end of what was once the mighty Metallica. I do have hope that RR can save them - he has produced the best records for many bands (RHCP, Black Crowes, Danzig, etc) He seems to have the Midas touch and lord knows following St Anger with something better won't be difficult.
