This set of instrumentals comes from the blues. It was really hard to pare down to ten. Especially because I really wanted to include some of the guys playing today who are so incredible. Coulda made a set of just Freddie King :p

I've already posted Eric Clapton doing this Freddie tune. Time for the original:

Peter Green is responsible for a number of great instrumentals. His work with Mayall though is a stand out:

Gotta have Albert Collins. Wanted "Avalanche" but couldn't find a good version, but this'll do:

Mike Bloomfield is unique. His work with Butterfield definitely needs to be included here:

Peter Green again, this time with Fleetwood Mac, with a beatiful tune. One of the few blues instrumentals to make anykind of showing in the charts.

Hard to pick which SRV tune to go with but this one is probably as good as any:

It's my poll, so of course there's going to be some Robben Ford. One thing that stands out to me is Robben's use of jazz scales and modes in his soloing. A lot of blues can start to get repetitive because the soloing is so much in the minor pentatonic. Not with Robben though. This song is a tribute to SRV. I think it's especially fun to see his interplay with the excellent Japanese player Michiya Haruhata. Watch for the trade offs at the end.

Gary Moore is another contemporary great. A student of Peter Green's. And playing another Freddie King great. Hard to pick which version of this tune to go with: Freddie's original, Mick Taylor's, Peter Greene's,.... But Gary deserves a place in this poll so this is the one I picked.

Gotta have Derek Trucks. This piece may not strictly be the blues, but I love it, so it's in: :p

Joe Bonamassa is a killer player and this is a gorgeous tune. Enjoy :

Like I said it was really hard to get down to ten. I mean, there's no BB, no Buddy Guy, no Albert King, no Mick Taylor, no Buddy Whittington. No Clapton (although he did appear in an earlier poll.) But I wanted a good sampling of classic and contemporary.

And as further proof of how hard it was to get down to ten, here's a Bonus track that I really wanted to include, but I had to cut something to get down to ten.

Hey Slashboi -- nice choice.

I wonder if I should have repeated that you can vote for multiple choices if you like.

So, blues fans, speak up for your favorites. Some really sweet tunes in this set!

Had to vote for both Peter Green tracks as well as Derek Trucks.
Green's playing is just so...ethereal, and Trucks has one of my all time favorite tones.

Agreed on both counts. Going to see Derek again in April. And seeing that original lineup of Fleetwood Mac was a real highlight for me. One show I saw had that lineup of Fleetwood Mac, the original lineup of Steve Miller Band (with Boz Scaggs) and the Jeff Beck band with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood headlining. I have a vague recollection there was a fourth band on the bill, but who it is skips my mind. Anyway, that was definitely way up there on the list of concerts I've ever seen.

Fleetwood Mac's Albatross wins! I did not expect that.

Wow, that must have been one of the most ridiculously awesome shows ever. I was born about 30-40 years too late.

And woo for Albatross, though I expected something a little more explosive to win.
