Hey guys, some of you might have seen this on the tech forums, but here it is again

My bass pedal recently broke and thanks to my shop i fabricated a diamond plate reinforcement plate. As you might have already seen i am selling them for just 14.99 plus S&H on ebay!!
If you havn't broken yours yet, it is just a matter of time, and it is easier to screw the plate down before you pedal is broken!!
Most of you already have broken it, but no problem!!. just hold pedal together and screw on the plate and it will hold your once broken piece together, and keep it together!!.
Did i mention looks bad ass too??

Wow, love it, how many you got? Gonna be selling them for a while? I would totally love one of those! Would you be willing to do one without the raised parts, a brushed metal version? I play barefoot and those would get annoying.

I would definitely get one too...as soon as I get out of debt from buying the console and the bundle!
Are there any other drum mods that you're thinking of making?

Using self-tapping screws is a good way to have the aluminum pop off the plastic after the stomping on the pedal eventually causes the screws to pull away from the plastic.
I would recommend using machine screws and nuts for more sturdy attachment (which is what I did).... I even used tapered head screws and recessed holes so that the screws don't stick up and jab my foot (I like to play barefoot)
Here's a link to my post about my mod. I cut the metal strips with a grinder.

currently we have 25 made and more to be cut, sanded, and drilled tomorrow and we are planning on selling them for as long as it takes EA to catch up to us :)
regarding the raised pairts of the diamond plate, they have no annoying feel or texture to them. i only play barefoot and not once have i been bothered by the diamond plate. as for now, we are only selling them in the diamond plate, but if demand for a straight metal version increases, then we will make them too.

You should engrave your "company name"/side-business name somewhere on the plate, as I'm sure you'll be making these for quite a LONG time...I can't fathom Harmonix producing a more durable pedal. Congrats on the awesome idea.
...now I just gotta get out of debt so I can support your endeavor!

well it was kindof a joke, but i meant it as EA figuring out that they're bass pedals suck nuts and start putting metal ones for sale. i think we all know they are too cheap to do such a thing though.

I have a strange feeling by next year there will be a lot of new Rock Band items out like medal bass pedals, official Rock Band mic stands, drum thrones, just give it time. The only problem with using yours is the whole warranty thing, I don't think they'll replace it once you've screwed on a piece of medal unless you can simple remove it without them knowing.

Well the whole point of his item is to PREVENT the pedal from breaking in the first place, and it looks cool.

Got my metal-pedal reinforcement from Rasehead last night. He included awesome instructions and everything necessary to very easily install it.
It feels extremely solid and is comfortable on my bare feet. He cut it to the perfect size as well. I can't say enough!
Thank you so much Rasehead, I hope you make that million dollars you were talking about!

Very very nice work. I actually just modified mine last night in a similar fashion, after not even one week of playing my bass pedal like many others broke in half, the only thing i think i did different then yours though was instead of using screws and further weakening the plastic, i went i with a super strong Epoxy, that as far as I can tell turned out very nice.

My wife has been complaining that I keep buying all of her Xmas ideas. I'd like to put a printout of your ebay ad along with the Best Buy mic stand print out that I gave her the other day.
Post reply of how to find an active item on ebay, or should I just PM you when I'm ready to order?
Great idea, man. Since a major company has already ripped-off CigDangle's pad covers (lower quality and majorly overpriced) we all need to make sure the word gets out about rasehead's pedal mod and support him as the originator!!
And if you don't want to DIY your pad covers, order a set from Cig, the originator of THAT mod. These guys deserve the recognition and $$ for being early adopters.

Aluminum can be anodized of course, there are a lot of colors that an anodizing place can do. My shop is not ready to anodize the aluminum, and the extra cost for this would not be worth it.

The pedal rocks, I used to have to go pretty easy on the petal, but now after installing this pedal I can just go nuts, there is no way that I can see the bass pedal breaking, it doesn't flex at all. I play barefoot, but with socks on and it works fine. You can stomp away all day with this thing and not have to worry, it is defiantly worth buying if/when the original pedal breaks.

Ya sure that would'nt be a problem, just leave me a note so i know to cut yours with no holes in it. Also you need to make sure that you get the right kind of epoxy for the plastic. And like any surface you will need to prep the surfaces accordingly. My dad works with this stuff for a living and has built an unlimited hydroplane. www.ourgangracing.com if you want to check it out. But if you do want one with no holes in it let me know.

Any suggestions on what type and where to get such an adhesive?
My dad tells me it needs to be a structual adhesive that can bond to aluminum. Hysol, EA9430 or other epoxies used to bond alluminum will work.
Be careful that the solvents used in what ever epoxy you get don't disolve the Styrene pedal (if it is styrene)
thanks

Just check the approved surfaces list, most epoxies will have such a list on the container, make sure it can be used on plastic. Alternativly you could just apply a small dab of te epoxy to a section of the pedel that can't be seen and allow it to dry to make sure it won't cause any problems.
Great mod by the way, I have a slew of guitar mods in the works, guess I'd better hurry up on them though before someone beats me to it :P

I might actually plan on buying one of these as well. Sure enough, my pedal broke, and I'm waiting for the replacement.
Does anyone know if the replacements are improved at all? Because if it's the same, I'll just have to get the reinforcement, as the pedal is indeed inevitable to break.
Thanks.

if you do not want to screw it into the plastic and your pedal is not broken. You are just adding this to support the pedal GO OUT AND BUY 3M double sided tape the kind you can find a car parts store. this is almost like a glue but will come off with some effort.

Wow rasehead i must say I am impressed. You've successfully capitalized on EA's failure. It looks like a great fix, and at a fair price. Hope all is going well for your impromptu business. Mine is starting to crack, so I'm exploring the options and this is definitely one of the favored ones. I'm going to try to the real bass pedal+button idea first because it seems more realistic and should help on those tricky bass parts where the stock pedal just doesn't cut it. Should that crash and burn, I am definitely going to buy this lol. Great idea.

What's the difference, rasehead? Is there anything other than the colour black that justifies the $15 increase?
mattchu09
12-23-2007, 10:47 PM
well carbon fiber is WAY more expensive than diamond plate, and since carbon fiber is stronger than steel, i would assume you would be paying for the upgrade in material and obvously more strength. Personally I have installed the diamond plate reinforcement on my pedal and it works fantastic, and rasehead not to downplay the new idea but i don't think you are gonna sell many of the new carbon fiber reinforcements, i personally wouldn't be able to justify the pricefor what you get, especially when you can get a reinforcement that works for 15 bucks less...
Draconis77
12-24-2007, 02:32 AM
I'm sure there are some people that won't mind the price difference for the look of the carbon fiber.
mattchu09
12-24-2007, 10:40 AM
oh of course there are always people that don't mind paying a little extra for a cool look, its that same division that is created between the people who wanna do the CigDangle quiet drum mod themselves and refuse to pay what they say is an outrageous 15 dollar price tag to have someone else make it for them, and the people who would much rather have them turn out nice/not have to go and get the materials/are not craftsy at all. I just was thinking he wasn't gonna be quite as succesful selling as many of these as he has of his metal cover, but of course I wish him best of luck with his sales!

Ordered a metal one and got it about 10 days ago. Can't say enough good things about it. Feels 10 times better, stronger, easier to play. It's that good. Harmonix should have made a metal petal to begin with. I increased a lot of scores on hard and expert that had stood for a while. The whole thing feels much more natural. Can't feel the petal flexing when you play it anymore.
So if you're on the fence about it. Buy it. Best $20 you'll spend (that includes shipping). And you don't have to worry about anybody breaking the petal. I got tired of telling friends "OK, when you play drums, the petal is very fragile..."

I just ordered 2 of these. Mine is starting to crack... and my friend's... well his will too, so I ordered one for him as well. Great idea, much better than dealing with EA, they still haven't shipped my replacement guitar, been 3+ weeks now... I noticed my pedal was cracked, did an RMA to get a box to send it back, then remembered seeing this somewhere on here. Did a search, followed the link, and away we go... screw EA.
if only my pedal didn't break right next to the hinge leaving no possibility of being able to use this solution... :(

can you make a video of the installment method. i'm looking at the pedal, and i'm not sure if you take the pedal off first or how easily the screws go in...thanks. considering buying one if the installment isn't too complicated.

I'll probably buy one of these, my kick pedal broke, because it's a cheap piece of crap, and I'm waiting for another one from EA. I don't want this to happen again, so I'll probably get one.

where am i going to find double sided tape thats is strong enough for this???
an auto parts store might carry some...I've seen double-sided tape intended ofr auto use, which should be plenty strong enough, so a place like Autozone would probably be your best bet

I went to office max and bought some velcro to put on the plate instead of the screws which ensures to not void your warranty AND utilizes the steel plating to continue reinforcing.
Now someone make a bag similiar to the official drum bags! So i can have a much better way of storing/transporting my drums!

Just bought one! Hope to receive it soon before my pedal breaks. It's gonna take a while to ship to Hong Kong though. Maybe I am the first international buyer?

Alright, I'm sold. Just did the old Pay Pal, so hopefully I'll see my Pedal Metal early next week. I was torn between the carbon fiber and the diamond plate, but the price was too good to pass up for the classic metal.

hey, what would you guys think about a plastic pedal that replaces your old one. Its a really strong plastic, cnc i think or something like that. We would put up a picture with a small block chevy being supported by the pedal.
Also, i've hit the 1000 mark for sales. Pretty awesome!
heres a link to latest auction for the diamond plate

Congrats rasehead! I've been using the diamond plate reinforcment for a few weeks now. It works great!! I think you should stick with the diamond plating or carbon fiber.....I also suggest you let people know about using velcro or tape so that the screws don't void the warranty if it SHOULD break (even tho it won't because the reinforcement is awesome)

How hard is it to remove that carbon fiber one after you stick it on? Can it be done?

I'm a little late getting back to this thread, but I just wanted to comment that we got our carbon fiber plate about a week ago, and it has been quite popular! It looks good, and it feels great. I don't have any discomfort or worries stomping on the pedal any longer. We're thinking we're going to add something to the top of the pedal because I find my feet sliding around quite a bit during more active drum play, but that's a minor issue.
Thanks again!

I just received my carbon fiber pedal, though I haven't had time to get it set up. When I sent rasehead an eBay message before purchasing he said that "They will come off if needed but it would not be easy." Hopefully I won't need to remove it, but it's good to know.

Hope it turns out to be worth it.

OK I'll bite.. just got my first replacement pedal from EA today. I just wish the carbon ones weren't so pricey. I'm not a big fan of the permanent drilling nor the mirror finish (IMO it doesn't look 'bad ass' it looks kinda cheap and unprofessional compared to the carbon but who am I trying to impress with my plastic fake drumset anyway right? )
I was holding out for a competitor who could maybe save me a few bucks or make something that was black but I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger and buy this one, mostly because I only discovered this thread and you seem like a good dude. I'm just paranoid about having some other failure besides pedal breakage down the road and being up sh!t creek or forced to spend $70 buying somebody else's used pedal off ebay. Suppose I could always just buy that woodrocker guy's product in that case.
Looking forward to "screwin it down before it screws up" :D

I'm nervous about voiding my warranty. It sounds as if the carbon fiber is the way to go as it is removable, albeit with some struggling?
What are the other key differences between the two?
It looks as if the carbon fiber provides a coarser feel (ie. more grip)? I've found too much slippage on the plastic stock pedal in my socks, and since I'm afraid playing with shoes will break it, I play barefoot. It looks like the metal pedal will be somewhat slippery too, but probably makes the pedal playable with shoes on doe to the reinforcement.
Finally, for shipments to Canada, has anyone encountered duty / taxes? It looks like it ships USPS, which *should* minimize the chances of customs issues.

I received shipment to Ottawa and paid no duty, taxes, etc.
I have the diamond-plate screwed in and play in my socks, and don't find it that slippery (though granted, I am not very good on drums)

I purchased RB on the release date and have not even hooked up the drums yet, but I after reading about the horror stories on the bass petal, I decided to buy one of these now and avoid the possible breakage in the future.

I got the carbon one, finally. It just arrived on Friday. Can't fault the shipper, he sent it ages ago.
Anyhow, it's smooth and flat. No grip on it at all. The thing feels AMAZING underneath your foot, though. Real sturdy; I had a number of people over today to play and had no qualms or worries about them breaking my bass pedal. That peace of mind alone was worth the money.
As for taking it off, I haven't tried, so no idea.

Hey guys, we came out with a new product to fix pedals broken at the hinge!
This will NEVER break, you can order it with a just the hinge if you already have a pedal metal. Or you can order it with a billet design, which looks really sick
we have em for sale of amazon and ebay
Hope all our customers our happy with their pedal metal!!

I also noticed a slight difference with the pedal in the fact that it is ever so slightly easier to press down
I can now beat don't get fooled again on EXPERT!!
pretty cool i know.

Sorry but I don't see a hinge there like it says. Just 2 pieces of metal. Is it just the photo's? Do you have a better photo of the pieces that go on the pedal?

I have to confess that I haven't read the whole thread but I have some quick questions that maybe one of you can answer:
This mod is plug and play or do we have to do some assembly? does it require for us to mess around with the original pedal from RB? If so what do we have to do?
Thanks
ya_i_rock

hey, the "hinge" is a piece of custom platic that goes inbetween the two metal plates. It is indestructable and will NEVER break.
there is some assembly required, all you have to do is screw the plate down
we have almost 3000 with 100% positive feedback.

I know I'm getting one. Ordered mine now. Unfortunately, I snapped mine at the hinge, but the hinge replacement pedal looks a tad cooler anyway, so, I suppose it may be worth the extra chunk of cash.
